i have been told on that a JDM swap will be very hard to tune in the states. so i was considering on a USDM WRX(2.0) swap or a USDM STI(2.5) swap. this will be going into a 98 RS coupe. what you all think?

Why tune a Ver 5 STi engine? 280whp not enough for you? Cant get pump 93?

You can do it without tuning, but its not a very good idea. There are tons of options like reflashes and whatnot for people swapping in JDM ecus. USDM swaps are good for people who live in emissions states.

The V5/6 STI has always cranked out "276HP" according to Japanese advertising... which I, at least, thought was common knowledge that the 276hp mark is total bulls@#$ that just means "It makes more"... ;)

whp is a little different from crank hp ;), also the same year WRC cars are rated about there too. Are you going to try to tell me subaru serverly under rates the rally cars too? Not a chance.

you're an idiot, just keep lying about stock hp if it makes you feel better.

there's no way a V5/6 put down 280 HP @ the wheels, the 276hp mark was set because of japanese auto emissions. If the motor put out over that it would have made it the most power motor until the US STi and JDM STi v8 Twin Scroll which both consistantly make more power then a V5/6

yeah... I missed the whp... the 276 figure is at the crank... and I believe the emissions law applied to advertising over 276HP... there is no way a car with the weight of a GTR R34 could move like it does with 276HP when it is significantly faster than a V5/6... or most of the other 276HP offerings in Japan... :D

not arguing the fact that Nissan and Toyota didn't build more powerful motors then advertised but saying that the Subaru engines were more powerful is a little wishful IMHO

I really dont know why I even bother but my car made 278whp on pump gas with a turboback and mbc set on 16psi. This was on Xotics dyno.... 150whp for a stock wrx.

So all you idiots can say what you want but like moose said I actually put down the numbers both on the dyno and at the strip.

Now all you bench racers have more to argue over.

post the dyno plot then, becuase this guy with a V5, downpipe, water injection, boost set at 16psi and 100 RON fuel put down a whooping 215whp, yet yours mysteriously puts down 70whp more?

http://dyno.scoobynet.co.uk/jap/phil_gardner1.gif
the chart is BHP

or maybe you would like to look at the 6-7 other V5/6 owners who put down 200-220 with a similar setup to what you claim did 280whp
