hey fellas, i'm fairly new here (my first post :)). i dont own a subaru, but i would sure love to own a newer legacy gt someday. anyhow, my friend's mom just recently purchased a 01(i think it was 01) outback limited(he's on the board but hasnt posted yet SOHCturbo i believe is his name). anyhow, he started talking some crazy talk bout possilby doing an sti drop into the legacy when and if that engine ever blows (not that there's anything wrong with it). anyhow, i was just wondering how possible is this swap? would the engine drop right in, like it belonged there? would it require alot custom work? wiring & such?

mechanical it will drop in and bolt on(might require minor modifications, not much different from a wrx to older impreza swap I believe but the wiring will be the difficult part. Don't quote me though :)

You'd run into a variety of ECU control issues. Feel free to read up on the plethora of information in this forum over the next few months and you'll find answers to most of your questions.
Oh...and if that engine in the outback now is in decent shape and maintained...i wouldn't be surprised to see it last 250,000 without any major issues. So he may be waiting a while.

A STi motor with an auto tranny in a 3700lb Outback would not be my first choice.
You would be better off to put in an H6. Save yourself the trouble and get a Volvo awd turbo.

clicky (http://blue-sun.net/Details/TehFridge/TehFridge.html) <--- here's a outback sport to STi swap that used to be semi-local (Detriot) that I detailed a few summers ago. . .towards the bottom of that page
