View Full Version : Props to AWD.....and RE92's
turbokill 11-22-2005, 01:35 AM Ok, I've talked my fair share of smack about our stock tires, but yesterday the stockers owned arctic valley road. At least 1 foot+ of fresh and it hadn't been plowed at all.
Seriously, I talked to 3 dudes in 4x4 trucks that turned around because they either started to get stuck or slide off the road.
I know alot of you board and ski, so if you are itchin' to make some turns Alpenglow is not a bad hike, and the snow is deep.
can we still post pictures???
Spooln4 11-22-2005, 07:37 AM yeah try some RE-70's...and then say that they are ok....damn these have to be the worse stock tires for winter driving in the history of rubber.
AKSubie 11-22-2005, 02:52 PM The RE-92's arent horrible for stockers, They do a good job for what they were designed for. Many here ran RE-92's out of the gate with the WRX's (and Legacy) but once you wind up with a set of studs, You'll realize how great AWD is.. seeing as the Subie will then be able to climb Denali.

i don't think the engineers were thinking how could me make the crappiest tire possible when they were designing them
MeLLoWd_WRX 11-24-2005, 08:32 PM I don't know why people hate the RE-92's so much. They aren't the best tire but they serve there purpose well. I have them on my wrx still and I haven't really had any problems. I mobbed up my friends mountain road the other day with 13+ inches of snow(when i stopped the snow was almost half way up my door) and my wrx drove through it with little problem. I will be getting snow tires but i'm happy with my RE-92's.
OrionAK 11-26-2005, 01:28 AM I went 3 winters with the 92's, too, and didn't have an issue. I have to admit, though, now that I took the plunge, I loves me some studs.

Exactly, hence me saying they do a good job for what they were designed for. As an all-around all-weather tire they arent bad. They were/are inexpensive, have a decent tread wear rating, are capable of fording through snow and the wet stuff, able to grip in the corners to provide fun driving, and provide enough grip at all temperature ranges so when you wake up one morning with 10 degree weather, they dont turn into glass. For that, they do a good job. OBVIOUSLY as with anything, when you get the benefit of an "all-in-one" you sacrifice some properties of the dedicated.
re92's are good tires for their design, but in heavy snow/ice, or in the twisties they can be improved upon. Hence many of us running dedicated winters and summers.

there are lots of better all weather tires out there
OrionAK 11-30-2005, 01:51 AM But which of the ones that come stock on the WRX are better? ;)
00Maddog 11-30-2005, 02:21 AM i was pretty impressed with the re92a's on the 06 wrx i pdi'd today. now there's a steel grey limited at conti, it drives more like the old sti's than a wrx, and that was in crappy roads.
