View Full Version : Who makes a kit for the 20G turbo upgrade?
cditch13 11-22-2005, 11:51 AM I have seen that more than a few people are running a 20G turbo on their STI. I know they are a direct bolt on for the EVO guys, is it the same for the STI? I've been reading posts on here for awhile and over on EvoM also. I'm trying to decide what my next car purchase will be. Evo's get into the mid to low 12's with the stock turbo still attached, and I haven't really seen that with the STI so I am looking to see what cheap turbo upgrades there are for the STI.
Freon 11-22-2005, 12:02 PM No, probably not mid to low 12's with the stock turbo.
Try the terms "FP", "DB", and "SBR" together with "20G" in the search. i.e. "FP 20G" or "SBR 20G"
2fas4u 11-22-2005, 12:13 PM You can get the 20G kit from Mauro motorsports and a few others. I ran it for a awhile and loved it!
dream 11-22-2005, 12:19 PM SBR 20g :)
cditch13 11-22-2005, 03:24 PM Thanks guys, I'll do some searches. To those who have it, do you have any compressor surge at around 6 psi? One of the tuners over on EvoM said he has found it on both the Evo and the STI while dyno tuning.

People have run 12.0x with the stock turbo.

Tanj! 11-22-2005, 03:36 PM If all you care about is dragging buy an Evo. Mod for the buck you will be happier.
06WRXTR 11-22-2005, 05:42 PM my friends 04 STI ran 12.48 @ 110 with TBE,AP Stage 2.....

If Dragging is all I cared about I would be asking about a GT35R kit, not a 20G. I want a car I can take to Summit point and have fun with on a track with turns. If I wanted to drag I would get the Evo, a Big Turbo upgrade and a Shephard racing trans and call it a day.

Too many acronyms around here. What is AP?
Also I looked on Forced Performance's website and didn't see a 20G upgrade for the STI. Is the 20G the FP Red or FP Green?
I also found the Slow Boy Racing 20G but all it had listed was the turbo itself. Is it a direct bolt on? What injectors do you need? Fuel pump? Custom tuning?

I can't recall reading about any significant low rpm compressor surge with a 20G. I can get some in the taller gears with my GT30R, but that's a whole different animal. Anyway, it's no big deal since you're below the powerband anyway - just downshift.

2fas4u 11-22-2005, 07:43 PM I could not pass up Deadbolts lifetime warrenty, although I only had her a few months since I got the GT30R :p
kedrin 11-22-2005, 07:51 PM call up or email or PM any professional shop on these boards and im sure they can make you a turbo kit out of just about any turbo on the market... just give them a holla or check the vendor section.

Thanks, that answered a lot of questions...

No problem. Def look into a Green, esp with an STi. Guy has a Green on his LGT and gets full boost around 3700 RPMs. You def have the displacment to spool one quick.
warnoldscu 11-22-2005, 11:31 PM I say go with deadbolt... that's what I'm going to do for my Legacy
http://www.boostplanet.com/product6.htm
And like they said before... maybe not the best for drag racing, but well tuned you can get 350 awhp (see dyno on that page, I believe it's an STI on this board, actually), and still have a great autocrosser with some good spool up - that's what I'm going for.

ewright 11-22-2005, 11:41 PM Frankly, the EVO engine has a ton of R&D in aftermarket parts while the US STi engine is fairly new. That translates into more, proven mods for the EVO. I think the consensus was that the EVO is also more track oriented while the STi is a little nicer for daily driving (Although if you look at the latest motor trend it seems like the EVO and STi are closer than ever). The best thing to do is go out and drive both; youll see that the cars have dramatically different personalities. When I drove them back to back I knew the STi was for me. Best of luck

E. Nick 11-23-2005, 01:46 AM Some answers to your other questions that were avoided: AP is accessport, a form of EM (engine management), which you will need, along with fuel system upgrades in order to run any turbo larger than stock.
Turbo's - the board here seems to favor Deadbolt's turbos for bolt-on's, with their 20G (44lb), SZ49 and SZ55 Fatboy topping the list. For rotated mount, some form of GT30 or GT35 seem to be the most popular. Figure roughly $4-7K in mods to swap turbos, depending on which turbo you choose and whether or not you turn your own wrenches.

They are not called acronyms unless they make a word, they are initials. :devil:
NATO = acronym
TBE = initials
Just what NASIOC needed, another **&*$%# English lesson... ;)
Timmy Burns 11-23-2005, 09:22 AM No, probably not mid to low 12's with the stock turbo.

I know what your saying. The 4G63 has been around forever so tuners had a leg up on the STI from the start. It still boggles my mind why Subaru didn't just bring over their 2.0L STI motor along with the STI since it was already a tried and true motor. At any rate I have driven an Evo already and liked it, but it was pretty tame in stock form (I have yet to drive a modded one). I don't know a single person that owns an STI so I still haven't had the chance to drive one yet.
