View Full Version : My Baby Got Busted
fungo phil 09-04-2001, 06:00 PM There was a five car pile up on northbound I-5 yesterday afternoon near Kelso that had all three lanes backed up for about a mile by the time I got there. I had just stopped at the end of the line in the center lane when the Toyota pickup behind me failed to stop. The woman driving said she had fallen asleep. No one in my car was hurt, but in addition to the visible damage, the cover over the right rear strut tower was dislodged somehow and the fold down seat on the right side will no longer latch in the upright position. Additionally, the steering wheel is now turned 5-10 degrees off center to the left. Looks like my frame got sprung a bit. :(

Kezzie 09-04-2001, 08:22 PM If your frame is bent, see if the insurance company will total it. This didn't happen with my WRX but my grand am. Got a new one no problem on the other party's insurance. Worth a look into.
Austin 09-04-2001, 08:36 PM Ohhh... I could only look at that pic for about two seconds...
Just makes me wanna cry!
Glad no people got hurt though.
My apologies...:(
Please keep us updated. My girlfriend is looking at that exact car so we're a bit curious about the details.
Did she hit you at a high rate of speed? Sorry, I don't want to be nosy, but I'm curious.
grumbly 09-04-2001, 10:17 PM Hey fungo phil Im sorry man. I know exactly how you feel. The more or less exact same thing happend to me on the 520 bridge about 2 weeks ago. It just makes you sick. I hope you the best. Cars can be replaced people cant. Im glad your ok.
fungo phil 09-04-2001, 11:17 PM She was on the brakes hard when she hit me and it was the hardest I've ever been hit, and I don't think it was more than 25, or so, but it was quite a jolt.
MGXsport 09-05-2001, 12:00 AM Oh man a hurt wagon! :(
Hopefully everything will sort out smoothly and glad no one was hurt!

jerymon 09-05-2001, 01:41 AM I'm glad to hear no one got hurt and everyone walked away unscaver (excpet for your blue baby). As others have said the car can be replaced but those in the car can not.

I'm not much for getting back at people but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. besides if she has insurance it wont hurt her much if you get a settlement that will put 4 or 5 WRX's in your driveway or maybe even a new dirveway in a new area.
sleeping at the wheel?? unexcusable
ROAST HER
$1000.00 in mods says she'd do it to you if the tables were turned.
I drive a WRX wagon 09-05-2001, 02:02 AM Hey, i just got rear ended too (Friday). but mine wasnt that bad, i just need a new bumper, no other body damage
subysouth 09-05-2001, 02:02 AM Glad you werent hurt. I wish people payed more attention. Ive been run into twice myself. You should push for a good settlement. It is a brand spanking new car.
HpiRally 09-05-2001, 02:49 AM Fell asleep my rear end! She was dialing on her cell phone darnet. Dude glad to hear you are ok. Like subie gal said, cars can be replaced. Damn subie gal you know everything dont you?
Joe
Kalins1 09-05-2001, 11:24 AM Phil! Man...good to see you are OK after being hit by a pickup. All of these pickups and SUVs on the road worry me.
If they have to do any frame work I would be seriously wary. Supposedly frame straighteners have come a long way, but I have still had a couple of friends need to have their frames straightened by reputable body shops and their cars NEVER drove the same again. In fact they would eat up tires like they were going out of style!
Good luck to you man!
Sean
bratmantlz 09-05-2001, 02:36 PM thats a ass whoopin!!!The woman driving said she had fallen asleep and WOMEN still get cheaper car insurance...    sue her ass and make her pay for her stupidity! and for funking up your wrx
Brat
scoobagenie 09-05-2001, 02:51 PM Phil - i'm truly sorry to hear that! it's so obvious from all your posts how much you've enjoyed your TS. i do hope that all turns out well.
fungo phil 09-05-2001, 08:10 PM On Monday morning it is going into the same shop that did/is doing the work on supermarcus' WRX.
grumbly 09-05-2001, 08:40 PM Good to hear you yer taking it to GW. Thats where my baby is at. They will take care of ya.
jhonas 09-05-2001, 09:16 PM Definately go for a settlement. How many people were in the car? If you want some extra spending money, take them all to the doctor and have them checked over for whiplash and what not (you said it was quite the jolt). This will definately get you some extra money. Without a doctors report, chances of getting money for personal injury would be slim. Of course if no one got whiplash or anything, then I guess it'd be insurance fraud. Maybe you should call your insurance agency and talk to them about it. Tell them that you (or the others or all) are experience whiplash pains (or whatever is hurting) and wanted to know what you needed to do to get reimbursed. I'm pretty sure going to the doctor is what they'd tell you.
And in the end, you'll have a good as new (or almost good as new) subie and some money for some mods.
-Matt
p.s. I also think its crap that female drivers insurance is less than males. Isn't that descrimination? In my perfect world, both male and female drivers would start out at the same rate (depending on the car).
:( Man that bites...Sorry to hear about it, and the picture made me cringe!
Those Meddling Kids 09-06-2001, 12:46 AM Similar thing appened to me, except guy didn't fall asleep, just stepped on the gas instead of break. Damn urban assalut vehicles (otherwise known as SUVs/trucks). Hope it gets patched up good as new, my RS did. Peace.
subymamma 09-06-2001, 09:56 AM Phil, I am soooo sorry, and was just bruised to hear of your plight. Oh, geeez..... did she smell of alcohol and was there any suspicion she'd been drinking? Man, how does the car drive?? I wish you godspeed in getting thru all this mess. Let us know how things progress, and again, I send along much sympathy and concern. Are you OK, and how's your neck???
Lemme guess, she didn't even apply the brake, right? It doesn't look like the front of her truck nosed down on impact...
fungo phil 09-06-2001, 12:57 PM All is O.K. with me, just a few muscle aches is all. I think she must have been on the brakes because the speed limit there is 70 mph and I don't think she was going more than 25-30 when she hit me. There was no alcohol involved. She had her son with her and they were returning home from a Civil War re-enactment they had attended that weekend and she probably hadn 't had much sleep. She had some cuts and bruises and her boy, even though he was wearing a seat belt, hit his head on the dash. The air bags in neither vehicle went off. I wonder how hard you have to get hit to trigger the bags?
John :)
Turbo4me 09-06-2001, 03:52 PM If the boy hit his head on the dash, she should thank God today and every day hereafter that the airbags did not deploy. When mine went off a few years back, it dislocated my jaw. Sucked bad. Glad to hear everyone is OK.
Curt
Kevin Thomas 09-06-2001, 04:45 PM Sorry to read about what happened. I got rearended twice in my OBS. Fortunately my car was not damaged. One of the cars that rear ended me had her front end a little crushed while my 'rear end' totalled a Ford Tempo. If you've seen the pics of my OBS in the members file, it was after the accidents. The bumper is only scraped from the two hits but no visible damage.
You had to get hit by an SUV. That bites! Just letting you know that your car can hold it's own to other cars of similar size/weight. Take Care!
RallyNavvie 09-06-2001, 06:13 PM I'm an experienced "crash-ee". For some reason people love to hit me. I've been in 5 no-fault accidents in the span of a year and 1 that killed my 96 Impreza which was deemed nobody's fault because they never found the ass that hit me
Airbags are finicky things. I hit a light pole sideways at 50mph and didn't trigger them in my 96, but then it may have been 100% sideways impact. Airbags are not supposed to go off in a rear end collision. My guess is the Toyota that hit you may not have had airbags. I hate the things, disabled the one on the driver's side of my car. Wish I had a switch to turn it on and off with. That way I could turn it off when driving fast on private dirt roads and on when I'm driving with the world of ignorant drivers otherwise.
Just to let you know, if the car needs a lot of paintwork done you can probably get the collision place to paint it whatever color you want. And as for a lawsuit, just keep in mind that an attorney may not be covered by your insurance policy so if things go bad you may have to pay for that by yourself.

subymamma 09-09-2001, 12:17 AM Hmmm... any color?
What about that lucious anthracite gray???? oooohh......
How ya doin' now, John, and how's everything progressing?
No frame damage? Gee now I guess you can still enjoy your new fog light covers, eh?
fungo phil 09-09-2001, 01:24 AM It goes into the shop on Monday morning. I suspect there is some frame damage, but if so it is very slight. I think this shop will do a good job, they have an excellent reputation. I bought some WRX 16" wheels for it to replace the 15" steelies. Now they can sit until I get the wagon back. I'm going see if they will paint those fog light covers to match when they paint the rest. :)
HoratioCaine 09-09-2001, 04:43 PM Well the air bags in your shouldn't have gone off in a rear ender. I heard a long time ago that 30-35 was the magic number, but I don't even recall if it was a reliable source. Then there are people who say their airbags went off because they hit their car in the garage with a lawnmower (when the car wasn't even running)
Too bad about the car. I agree, make the woman pay. She fell asleep with her little kid in the car? Well... sounds like a failed attempt at darwinism in action.
I drove over 800 miles Thursday, 200 Friday, got 1.5 hours of sleep Friday night, and drove another 200+ miles Saturday, and there wasn't a hint of falling asleep. People just need to pay attention to what they are doing.
T-WRX 09-09-2001, 05:45 PM fungo phil - that is definately a foul ball. :(
Glad you are okay. Hopefully there will be no need for lawyers.
subymamma 09-09-2001, 07:41 PM Horatio is dead-on. I wouldn't risk my own life if I felt that sleepy by driving on a highway or anywhere, but if my KID was in the car WITH me, jeez, was she ever lucky that she didn't screw things up more royally than she did!
Think she'll learn a lesson??
