Hey gang, it's been a while. Thought I'd give you an update on my GTO.

Last July, I blew up my motor - it was a heads/cam, bolt-ons 5.7l LS1 that ran 12.20's @ 113. Basically, I melted a couple of pistons after 150 or so passes at the track (part of it was the tuner's mistake too, but that's another story). It blew on the dyno, even got it on video: http://padrenet.com/racing/videos/dyno05b.wmv . :o

So I took apart the motor myself in my garage and planned my new one. Rather than rebuild, I decided to go with an iron stroker - a 6.0l iron block bored 4.03 and stroked 4.0 for a 408 cid or 6.7l motor. Forged bottom end with thermal coated heads and pistons and a compression ratio of about 11.3. A new 90mm FAST intake manifold and throttle body, 42# injectors, and a few other upgrades.

I did the assembly myself with the help of a friend (only thing the shop did was bore the block and balance the assembly). All in my own garage. Tons of fun. I'm also doing most of the tuning myself.

Here's the video of us cranking it up the first time:
http://padrenet.com/racing/videos/crankit-a.wmv

And after break-in, here's my first pass at the track:
http://padrenet.com/racing/videos/408-first-run-a.wmv

I cut a 1.685 sixty-foot and was running 1.7's all day long with M/T Drag Radials (on my OZ Superlegerras, which are kind of a tribute to my WRX days :) ). Alas, no good 1/4-mile times yet because on that day I was still trying to dial-in the shift tables (automatic, of course, with a 2800 stall) to compensate for the extra power (you can see it bouncing the limiter in the video).

Conservatively, we're shooting for 450hp at the rear wheels. Perhaps up to 480. It should be running mid-high 11's all day long N/A. The cam is rather mild and it's a great daily driver.

After we get it all dialed-in, then we go on the bottle. I figure a 150-shot. Should be solid 10's. Gotta beef up the drivetrain first, though.

Anyway, just wanted to check in with all my old Subie friends. If you see me at the track, come say hello. Or come visit us over at LS1GTO.com .

A friend of mine was gonna do an iron block, but for the added weight he discovered that it didn't really prove to be any stronger than an LS1 block. But, that's stock cubes to stock cubes... I guess with boring it out, iron is the way to go.

I've seen LS1s go 10s on 150 shots (with stalls and what not). And that was stock cubes. I'd imagine with the extra displacement and 150 shot... solid 10s as you said for sure... prolly mid 10s, maybe low 10s.

Same guy above who was considering the iron block (he built a turbo Firehawk), went 11.8 @ 113 NA with a stock LS1 and bolt-ons, 2002 Firehawk. I know the GTO is abit heavier... but, the extra displacement should definitely get you mid-11s all motor.

Sounds like a beast. Goodluck with the project!!

Wow, why to go dyno operator, bouncing it off the rev limiter

Nah, the motor was already dead by then. Bouncing the limiter wasn't the problem, the main problem was that when the tuner did the original heads/cam package, he took a cheap shortcut and fly-cut the pistons to allow for valve relief on the higher-lift cam. But the fly-cutting left sharp edges on the pistons that would eventually get red-hot and cause detonation, which then melted the pistons. Here they are, you can see the fly-cuts and the melted pistons:

http://padrenet.com/hlink/rebuild/P6230111s.jpg

Now, the motor might have survived the detonation, except that the tuner botched the table that would have pulled timing when it was sensed, and basically it was running high octane timing with no knock reduction. Boom. It did last 12,000 miles though before it blew.

Anyway, dug-e-fresh... the LSX guys have a new option coming up from GM - a 6.2l aluminum block with a 4.065 bore. It's going in the new Escalade, I think. But the LSX crowd are going to snatch them up and put LS7 heads and intakes on them. They can make a 416 cid with a 4.0 stroke, I believe. Should be pretty sweet.

Nice. I've got a 99 SS with an MTI wet-sleeved 387. It is at around 500 rwhp, but the cam is a bit less streetable.

Its fun to have the insta-throttle, but in the first corner (and the SS has every conceivable suspension mod) I start missing the STi.

Sounds like a nice car.

Nice ride! The motor sounds great. My first car was a 1967 GTO. I might have to get an 04 or 05 when I go Stateside.

first thing i thought when i saw this thread was the last time i saw big turkey at the track and i asked him if he missed awd, and he said he has better 60 foot times in his stang than he ever did in the wrx
