what was the final cost of everything? I would be almost willing to sell my 98 RS-T for a conversion like that.

how hard was the rhd conversion? it seems like it might be easier than all the wiring bs. so what, like cut a hole in the firewall, use the steering rack and dash from the clip, and just trade the harness more or less straight across? did you use the clip's steering column or your car's? i really want to know more about this swap

tzedek
11-26-2005, 01:34 PM
the cutouts are alread there in the firewall, just need to punch them out.

no crap? i guess i've never looked that close, sweet... so it's really pretty darn easy that way huh? i always asked moose questions about how he did his but he was a little short on answers is there any big thing that you'll run into this way? my car is also a 97' l so this is like uber-insightfull

as far as RHD swap, both i and lachlan have quite good posts on how todo. if you would read slowly and carefully, its really a piece of cake.

basically, the firewalls are symetrical, just make the other side the other side.

dash from 92-98 early is same. later 98 v4 -01 v6 is same. RHD is EASY, if you dont understand that, ill say it again. RHD = good. do it.

the conversion is fairly straigh foward.
yes it is easier than the wiring. i did all the wiring for lhd and then went rhd. that sucked. took less time to convert than wire.
yes cut a couple holes in the firewall
rack and dash from the clip yes
i just used the colomn from my car but i guess i got lucky that it just bolted up. i know that lachlan had issues with his.

version 1-4 early is all the same. 4 later-6 is the other style. been trying to figure out the lack of one seat, i suppose i could part out my pair of sti seats if there was a buyer for each, but i have no idea what id rather have. mab some monstors, but those are bling

josh...just josh
11-27-2005, 12:15 AM
wait.. so there arent cut outs for rhd already there? you cant just punch it out? did you have to change the harness at all or was it drop in? so no heat huh? does neither assembly work or did you just not bother? by the way guy, hot car really!

silvialost
11-27-2005, 11:14 AM
the cutouts arent already there but the templates for them are.
you just have to cut them out.
yes i have the jdm bulk and front harness.
no heat, ac, radio, blah blah blah. car didnt come with it, i was going to search my life away for the parts.
thanks for looking everyone.

silvialost

yeah you can keep heat. you could even keep ac but thats just not for me.

Natoe
11-27-2005, 12:44 PM
doesnt heat keep more coolant in the system, and therefore cooling better? plus your heel and toes dont go numb

silvialost
11-27-2005, 01:01 PM
the heater core does keep more coolant but the heat has to be on for the motor to benefit. in texas its hot, im not trying to drive around with the heat on all the time.

you guys dont read things and remember well eh?

if u do the firewall conversion -which is easy as proven by RHD #1,#2, #3 conversion,

you run full JDM everything. the logic is to use the full JDM harness unmodified.

run full JDM climate control, AC, heater etc.

if u really have any quesions, fly to SF and ill take u for a ride. u can hit all hte buttons and check out the JDM climate control for yourself. it smells JDM.

theyre hot! they are not even an inch above the ground.
they scrap all over the place but they will wear down to an appropriate level.
i find the scrapping humerous cause they look so good.

What's the main benefits of riding in RHD ? Can understand the whole JDM thing, but I can't imagine driving around here in RHD. Plus, cops would freak out for sure.

rhd benefits-

quick steering 2.7 rack
OEM wiring harness- no monkey business
japan spec climate control system
shifting with left hand is better than right
you can fit the proper radiator with the RHD AC condensor
braking system booster/MC has better feel

driving around in RHD is just like any other car. people may jock on it being whatever, but how many people have actually driven RHD / LHD back to back as daily drivers? not many right?

personally,i prefer RHD over LHD as a daily. i can squeze between traffic gaps on the right side better than before on the left - you see better. when you go into the gap, you know you can make it by looking, but if you're on the right side you see exactally how much space u have.

if u can drive a RHD on the track and keep a clean line you can clip apex's better because you already have an idea of clipping it tight from LHD prospective.

theres alot of things.

ive been pulled over by the fuzzo about 4 times for random misc things; registration, plate lights out (and got away ticket free). never once have they asked me anything about my RHD.

just dont drive like a dolt i guess?

Natoe

i love the idea simply for its uniqueness.. plus the above. thats cool to hear that cops are cool with it too

are the pedal holes in the firewall already, or just the outlines? like the heater core holes? im actually wanting to do this the more i read about it. and it seems easier to get it going without the wiring mess i've heard of. moose's car gave me inspiration to try this personally. how many of you have done this themselves? and what level of experience do you have? how long did it take the first time? -keith

11-30-2005, 11:24 AM
moose i have some?s on RHD do you have to rewire the tails, or do the wires just lign right up. How much stuff do you nead besided the clip. ie fuel lines, maybe fuel pump, radiator piping, fluids,... How hard is the firewall to modify, i remember your post saying it took a long time, but is it hard. How long would it take to do. I am still trying to figure out what to buy; a L and go JDM RHD, or just get more money and get a RS or WRX.

if you have questions, read my FAQ. then use brain and think about it and look at pictures. then you'll have all the answers.

lota pictures and info on RHD.

fuel pump is needed with turbo motor, if you read lachlans foto FAQ, you'll see the actual pictures.

heres my faq thread

As has been mentioned, learning to drive RHD isn't really too challenging. A few months back I got to drive a genuine gray market Civic Si-R. Other than the part where I turned on the wipers everytime I wanted to change lanes, it was a breeze...

11-30-2005, 09:51 PM
Glad to hear that...makes me wonder if I should go and make my little RS a RHD machine.

Still not sure if it's worth the trouble though. I guess it's a matter of preferences. I'd have to see one, or actually ride one to know for sure.

Maybe these are dumb questions but here goes:

What happened to the VIN numbers on the dash? Did they get covered or did you cut the dash to be able to see them? Do police hassle you about it?

a 05 sti with (from what i heard) a utec, turboxs mbc, 850cc, intake, exhaust, and a vf22?. (dont really know what turbo)
but he was makin only 258 on the same dyno. he was the car right before me.

i also know that a wrx with a cobb ap stage 2 and intake and tb exhaust only made 205 on the same dyno last weekend.

i might be able to post the curves but i dont have a scanner. let me see what i can do.
