I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I checked all of my pockets and sure enough none of them have $400 for a set of winter tires. What I do however have is a set of used studded toyo tires that were used on a BMW. The problem is that it was a RWD BMW so the tire tread on the rears are noticeably lower than the fronts. To get a rough idea of how much I took a string around the outer circumference of each one and found a difference of about 1" circumference between the two. So the question is, with a front tire circumf of 76" and a rear of 75", would that make a big enough of a difference to screw up my center diff?

Yes!
IIRC - Doesn't the Owners Manual say that tires need to be within 1/4 inch in circumference?

Not sure, it's in my glovebox and it's cold outside :)

I have a similar problem although I have a difference of a little under.5" between the tires. One pair with close to full tread and another pair a little worn. I tried finding places that would shave tires, but didn't find any in my area.
I drive a 95 Legacy 5 speed, viscous center, open front, and rear diffs. My question is, would it matter if I placed the tires in a criss cross pattern, so that the front right would have a worn tire, and the left rear would have a worn tire. Or would this just cause more problems with the front and rear diffs. Or is it just better to install them in pairs of worn rear, new front?

umm hehe not even sure I'D try that one. hate to bash your idea but yeah you'd just mess up your front and rear diffs on top of it assuming you didn't get into an accident first.
Yeah looks like I'm going to be double checking my available funds to see if just maybe I can afford a new set. I'm sure I'd be happy with it if I did. I'm going to check with wal-mart and see if they have winters at the wal-mart near me.... I work there so I get 10% off so maybe that will help.
