View Full Version : Got broken into. (pic's inside) Can you suggest a good alarm?
ChosenWon 09-05-2001, 06:42 AM So I was walking out to my car to do some of my mesh work, (2:30am) and I find my car door open dome light on. They took a ton of stuff, and screwed up all my locks, scratched the hell out of my windows, and messed up my trunk and door handles.
So....With the insurance money, can you suggest a good alarm?

ivbdn 09-05-2001, 06:58 AM Oh man! That totally sucks ass! I'm sorry to hear about it. As far as an alarm goes, I don't know. I've got the factory one. BTW, the kit came today. Thanks!
ChosenWon 09-05-2001, 07:11 AM Cool, enjoy your kit. :) Can I get that alarm that shoots flames out the sides?
alexs001 09-05-2001, 08:31 AM f-in ********. I can't stand theives. They are so lazy. Now I'm all riled up!!
Salesman Mode:
As for alarms, we have a new brand called Predator available. The systems are basically all the old (reliable) Avital gear under a new name. There is a lifetime warranty on everything including the REMOTES! Most decent shops also guarantee their install for as long as you have the vehicle.
End Salesman Mode.
Thanks
Sorry to hear of your loss, I've been there.
Hyperdash 09-05-2001, 08:37 AM chosen I was going to suggest the alarm that shoots flames outta the side too, does anyone here actually have/know someone who has that?
Geek Guy 09-05-2001, 10:34 AM ... don't think they're legal in the U.S. Only places like Hong Kong, I think. Somone correct me if I'm wrong.
nikkicalves 09-05-2001, 11:15 AM Get a Clifford/Avatal - same thing. Just make sure it is sensative enough that it will not ignore taps to the body. I don't care what anyone says...it might get a little annoying but at least you won't have stupid kids fing with your car. I had my wing stolen and since then I have installed my Cifford and people stay away from my car cause they don't want to set off the alarm. Let's just say I have all of the bells and whisles and I am happy when it chirps to let people know that this ain't no factory crap!
Nick.
BTW I spent $600 CDN to get mine installed. At least you know only the best of thives can take your goods.
phatride01 09-05-2001, 11:23 AM as this weekend, someone shattered the rear quarter glass on the wagon.
IT SUCKS! even more because there was NOTHING in the car that was "valuable." The person(s) just broke the glass to get kicks, I guess.
Whatta PITA.
again, sorry to hear of your loss.
phat.
Subie Gal 09-05-2001, 11:23 AM awww Chosen... that sucks!!!
I am so sorry... :(
any alarm is better than no alarm... be sure it's wired into your trunk as well as the doors....
i had a Clifford on my last car... it did the job...
i have the factory alarm on this one and i garage it...
hang in there!!!! i feel for ya...
theives are the worst kind of scum.

What you should do, is hook up some nerve gas to some intercooler spray nozzles or fuel injectors on the outside of the car and have those spray out nerve gas whenever your car is messed with! just think, i'll never get towed either!
later gators,
courtney
ColinL 09-05-2001, 11:25 AM 1: if you park outdoors or in an otherwise unsecure place (say public parking garage) at home or work then your car won't be very safe no matter what. especially at home, since these punks have hit you once already.
2: be discreet in every way, if you show nothing worthy of theft they are less likely to break in. minimal visual modifications, detachable face (or otherwise obscured) head unit, nothing accessible and visible in the car (radar detector, GPS, cell phone, wife's purse).
3: get a competent alarm appropriate to the level of threat, but don't spend crazy amounts on it because everything can be defeated in one way or another. I like DEI alarms, something like a Viper 550+ would work great. Since you've been broken into once already, be sure to have hood and trunk triggers installed and I would recommend a hood lock and interior piezo sirens. They used to be called 'pain generators', but I believe they just call it a piezoelectric siren now... tiny little buggers that you mount in the car somewhere (dash vents are popular) and it's not humanly possible to be in the car when they are going off. This helps against the thieves that don't care if your alarm goes off because they're just going to dismember your dash with a crowbar and take what they can in under a minute or so.
cvalle-sd 09-05-2001, 11:59 AM The alarm is only good if it can
1. Alert someone willing to help you
2. Make life difficult for the thief
basically, nothing short of the threat or reality of physical violence will keep someone out of your car (or house, or pocket) if they want in. No alarm can do more than scream help. point is - they'll wait 'til your car is isolated. I say buy your stereos at costco, and try not to leave anything in the car you can't afford to replace with the next paycheck. As far as I'm concerned, nothing in the interior of my car is going to cost more than $150 from now on. Don't buy some HAL9000 alarm. Just something with ignition kill, unless your're going for hardcore, remote 2nd-battery kind of stuff. Car thieves are bums who have that much less to lose than you - just don't show 'em anything. Be careful where you leave your car, and hope for the best.
joe z 09-05-2001, 12:17 PM second the dei line of viper alarms yoiu should get a prox sensor with it too
Keith 09-05-2001, 12:51 PM wow man I'm sorry to see that:( smae thing happend to a friend of mine 2 weeks ago, they took EVERyTHIng...lewzers!!
ahh neways, to answer ur qestion. I have clifford Solaris...here are the pluses
1. auto car start (with a stick, and its safe:) )
2. very sentisive (also "learns". So it doesn't go off in a lightening storm, but if someone touches it it will go off.
3. you can add all kinds of things to it. Like an module that can tell if your car is being lifted (to protect rims), wireless sirnen (so they can't cut any wires), and many other things
4. you can program all the buttons to do what you want them to do.
5. instead of a dumb vallet switch (that anyone can hit), it has a little code pannel (consiting of 2 buttons). If you open your car and u don't have the remote, you put the key in and put the code in. I like having that.
6. it has a car jacking thing, I don't use it, but its cool to have.
7. it has a carbon fiber remote..it saves weight:)
www.clifford.com. Everyone has vipers, they all sound the same, and most ppl just ignore them.
Its cool to have something that sounds different + has auto-car start:)
let me know if u ahve any questions man..sorry to hear of ur loss. Kick some ass if u find out who did it
Keith
also, see if you can have a siren INSIDE ur car also, that would really anoy the robbers, and tehy might not bother with ur car. I want to get one of those soon:)
skyhigh420 09-05-2001, 01:04 PM sucks dude, go with whatever alam you like, they are all the same..beatable. also get a Lojack, cause maybe next time the whole thing will be gone. Also a club is a nice deterrant, but nothing will stop a real theif. As i live in NJ, all to close to Newark, your only sure bet is to live, yes LIVE, in your car with Smith and Wesson riding shotgun! Anyway, point is that without you there with some force to back up your ass, kiss your **** goodbye if someone wants it. Key is to not attract attention, but that sure is hard with all the **** out there to get.
MagicMT 09-05-2001, 02:20 PM Sorry to hear about that. :( I think I'm going to need a better alarm too since I'm going to be moving to an apt with outdoor parking... I have the factory one and it's crap. It never goes off. I can bang on my own car, sit on it, and it doesn't chirp or anything. At least I have an autolock. Could I put 2 alarms in my car?
Mike
bratmantlz 09-05-2001, 02:33 PM hmm get a 12gauge and prop it up so if anyone walks through the garage door the bell answers them  or a glock of any cal.
not sure on the car alarm issue though
STiShawn 09-05-2001, 02:41 PM Factory alarm saved my car. My GF's Corolla was broken into, and the stereo was stolen right next to my car,my car was fine, right outside my bedroom window! These guys were good, no damage to the car, but no stereo in the car either....funny thing is, the stereo didnt work anyways....jokes on them..a$$holes...
scoobagenie 09-05-2001, 02:43 PM i feel your pain.
my last car had its window shattered - i guess my stupidity was leaving a briefcase on the back seat. i'm assuming the thieves thought a laptop might be in there, but imagine when their "loot" turned out to be only my Bible! hope the little dirt bags felt guilty
Keiho 09-05-2001, 03:07 PM Sucks to hear that man.
Sorta OT, but does anyone know whether or not I can retrofit a sensor or something to my trunk? I just found out my alarm doesn't go off when the trunk is opened. What the crap! Piece of junk alarm. Heh.
8Complex 09-05-2001, 03:08 PM Damn, sorry to hear, man. Hope they didn't get anything but the stereo and cause a little damage (damage can be fixed and the stereo can be replaced, but other things are just too valuable to replace).
I had a car that was broken into once... the broke the pass. window and tore apart the entire interior trying to get the radio out (it was bolted to the frame, hehe, I love my Volvo - I'm still using this radio too, just got a new faceplate & remote). Then the morons decided that the trunk opened from the sides and pried with a big screwdriver on either side of the trunk causing massive damage to the fenders and trunk lid, then managed to finally pry up the trunk lid where the lock was, and stole my box & a bag of clothes (idiots), and all my tools. They managed to ring up a bill of around $2500 - which my insurance company then screwed me out of... needless to say, we switched insurance companies very soon thereafter - and I just junked the car because it wasn't worth it to fix. :(
Idjiit 09-05-2001, 04:01 PM Happy with my Clifford. The fact that it's sensitive enough for door taps so that it'll "chirp" at someone to let someone know what's up, but smart enough to know what's a tap and what's not is pretty cool.
I also got the tilt-sensor which I haven't tried yet, but is pretty crucial since I live in SF.
Of course, in my new apartment I've got a garage, so... Not too big of a deal anymore.
Darwin 09-05-2001, 04:29 PM I got smash and grabbed earlier this year. losers took a case with about 6 crappy casette tapes in it. busted my driver side rear to do it, putting a ding in the metal and a couple of bad chips int he paint. =( must have been wearing a belt.
I keep nothing of value visible in the car now..as far as stereos go, I'm gonna installa stock WRX unit.
dandbest 09-05-2001, 04:53 PM Like everyone else said already, sorry to hear about your loss...
Here is an idea that I've had for a while: put a snake in the car when youre not in it! Believe me, no one will touch it. The only problem I can forsee is getting the snake out of the car when you gotta use it... See, if I had this part, I'd be a millionaire.
Danny
rogue 09-05-2001, 05:12 PM The flamethrower out the side is only being used, afaik, in South Africa. It's not an alarm system, it has to be triggered by the driver. The system is meant to "disuade" carjackers, and is said to be *drumroll* NON-LETHAL.
The company that makes it does allow, however, that the assailant will most likely be blinded for life. You know. Because of the fire burning his face and eyes.
I've always wanted to rig up something that "chirps" when the car is touched, then arcs a nice blue bolt of electricity across the body of the car. Somehow I think that'd keep the thieves at bay.
Jon [in CT] 09-05-2001, 07:38 PM I've read the "Blaster" flame thrower is good for five uses before you have to refill. I'm sure it could be re-wired to operate from an alarm system's horn or something.
http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/9812/11/flame.thrower.car/
beatEVO 09-05-2001, 08:04 PM that flaming "deterrent" system was given the ill-NOBEL peace prize award for the year it came out.
sorry to hear about your loss. i hope the same thing happens to the punks that stole stuff from you.
That sucks man :(
My car has the factory alarm, and the more I read about this the more I want to get a real alarm system. I have AFC and AVC-R in plain sight, too...eek!
EddyRS 09-05-2001, 09:52 PM Sorry to hear that.....I too just had both my covers stolen off my motorcycle ($300) Fortunatly they did NOTHING to the bike...they even left the tank cover on. But I was PISSED none the less.
I have the Clifford Intelleguard Alarm (Got it installed the day after picking up the Car from the dealer) and have the Outside Prox sensor turned up so that if anyone gets 3 feet from my RS it emmits a VERY loud screech. Scares the crap out of those who want to take a close look. Also I have a factory car cover on when I'm home, and have it locked all the time. Good prevention with punks and loosers is "out of sight, out of mind".
I'll be moving into a house soon (at a condo now).......I can't wait to have a real Garage.
Basically, if you have a "good insurance company" (that's sounds funny, is there really a good insurance company?)
then if it gets broken into, or worse vandelized, then it should be covered, I hope.
Cheers and Consolation
EddyL.
ChosenWon 09-05-2001, 11:22 PM thanks guys it's nice of you to say. I will be looking into a Clifford alarm over the next few days I guess. Just curious, what does a good clifford alarm run? also is it posible to install yourself?

chosen I was going to suggest the alarm that shoots flames outta the side too, does anyone here actually have/know someone who has that?
If I recall the news report, it was South Africa. With all of the kidnapping, carjackings and murders a Mercedes was equipped with flame throwers from the sides.
Corn-Picker 09-06-2001, 01:18 AM I know someone who installed a simple $5 toggle switch to the wire responsible for fuel pump management. He put it in some weird place in a corner of the floor on the drivers side. Needless to say, with a system like this a car theif would probably be baffled, as it is something he hasn't seen before. It wouldn't stop the guy from breaking your glass, stealing your stereo, or denting your car, but they couldn't drive off with it. I believe Diehard now makes a remote controlled battery, that would also help make a car theft proof.
I like the security system featured in Robocp III (I think it was III), when the guy gets in the car, loops sorround him, and then electrocut him, hehehe. I have no pity or remorse for theives.
Corn-Picker
White Knight 09-06-2001, 01:54 AM I too feel your pain.
My car was a victom of my trunk being poped open and everything taken. I called the cops and they couldn't doanything other than fill out a report, and the insurance comp. was no help ether. So know I moved out of Jersey City and into New City with a driveway.:D
Patrick L 09-06-2001, 02:35 AM Well that's Blue Springs for you Mike. I know cause I had my 97 Ranger broke into, some time between 1-3am on Thanksgiving morning, 1997.
Plus 20 others cars in the same area that morning.
BS is bad area. I have seen a lot of brake-ins in BS.
BTW, do you have the keyless entry? If so, you can get the Subaru alarm upgrade for $70 for your car. I put mine in and it only took 30 min. I got mine from www.subaruparts.com
Call me if you need help.
Sorry to here about the car. :(
@#$@ing punks!!!!!!!!!!!
I tell you. If I ever found out who broke into my truck. I was going to brake open a can of woop @ss on them or their car. They stole a bunch of stereo crap out of mine. One was a brand new Kenwood 7007 mask head unit. This was back when they were first coming out. I had a pair of 12" Punch subs. What's funny. They took the speakers out of the box and pitch the box in the back yard. That was the last time I was not going to have an alarm.
Brainwalker 09-06-2001, 02:57 AM This may be a bit extreme but if you ever see anyone messing with your car and you catch them....cut their friggin fingers off...it's been done in older cultures. I had some punks slash the tires on my old car and my mom's one night along with 10 other cars. I was up for a week watching out my window paranoid with a knife nearby for slicing fingers. My my nor I had money for this kind of crap...she was unemployed at the time. As John Travolta said in Pulp Fiction "You don't @#$% with another man's (or woman's) car.
I'm not a violent person at all but I HATE people who mess with your car. Low life scum.
just my thoughts.
Chris Riley
wolf8314 09-06-2001, 03:20 AM Has ne one ever seen the movie The Jackal. In the movie bruce willis sprays some biocontaminate on the rear handle of his car. When the would-be theif touched the handle he started going into convulsions and foaming at the mouth....................man if only you could buy that stuff
Wolf
Kostamojen 09-06-2001, 04:30 AM I think that was a nerve-gas type stuff in Jackal :p
They key to prevent break-ins is have a garage... That, and park close to where people are (IE dont park in the dark-lit backs of parking lots trying to prevent door-dings)
ChosenWon 09-06-2001, 06:03 AM (IE dont park in the dark-lit backs of parking lots trying to prevent door-dings)
Which is eactly what I was trying to do. I park in a lit open garage. I guess they had light to work by.
Insurance adjuster is comming out tomorrow. The way Statefarm works it is: They come out to the car, estimate the damage, subtract the deductable, and cut me a check. A subcontracting stereo company will also call me, ask me what I had, order it, and make an appointmet on when to install it for me. They in turn simply bill the ins company for the sereo eqpt. They said only things that are "supposed" to be in a car are covered. IE my tools are a loss.
I will let you know what the adjuster says tomorrow. Wish me luck.
BTW, does anyone know what Subaru charges for the faux carbon fiber dish stuff? Can you order the pieces seperate? Any help on this would be appreciated.
-=Mike
foxdeman 09-06-2001, 09:59 AM dose anyone know where i can get "stuff" to upgrade my factory alarm? by "stuff" i mean trunk sensor, louder alarm, lift sensor. I dont know much about car alarms, but my friends stero just got jacked . . .
Peaty 09-06-2001, 11:22 AM That Sux big time. That was obviously done by amateurs I can get in an RS in less than 2min with the lock out kit I have and it won't damage anything. No it's not just your basic Slim Jim either.(I can show you next time we meet up) I think that you can do fine with the OEM alarm. It's easy to install and will have the amateurs pick an easier target. Heck on my last car I rigged up a blinking red LED that came on when I turned off the car, that's all it was. A professional will get in your car no matter what you have. just my $0.02
Maximum 09-06-2001, 03:25 PM For theft prevension, a wireless immobilizer (tought to beat!) and a self-powered back-up siren.
For break in protection, well if it's a snatch and grab there's not much you can do. Just keep it out of sight, maybe rig a fake dead panel to cover your stereo. I know a guy who bought an old Subaru AM/FM radio for cheap, pried off the plastic cover, filed it down a bit, and stuck it into the place of his removable face-plate system. So far, no one has figured it out.
4x4x4x5 09-06-2001, 04:36 PM That bites the big one. remind me to tell you in private what we do to punks like that back home !
Bruce
Scooby do 09-06-2001, 06:54 PM That sucks they really did your car in, scratches and locks. Sometimes I think your better off leaving it unlocked. But the thieves are probably to dumb to have checked if it was unlocked.
Bob
Flacco 09-07-2001, 02:01 AM I have the Subaru Factory fitted Alarm, which happens to be a brant alarm, It is great, it chirps a warning if somebody touches the car..... The only person that is going to get my car are professional theives.... And if they are a professional then nothing will stop them... One thing to consider (which I did but thought it was to expensive) is satelite tracking.. In Australia its about 1200 bucks for install and about 300 a year... If the car is broken into they ring you straight away, however if the car then moves they immediatly call the police and co-ordinate the chase with them... Usually the cops will stay back then your car will get to a set of light or something and the carwatch people will imbilaze the engine, then the cops swoop in... They guarentee to have your car returned to you with in 3 hours I think.....
Pluto 12-07-2001, 08:22 PM I have heard about this system- Lojack. People say it is very secure in H.K.
Do they have it here also? Can I have more detail on Lojack? Where can I get it install?
North Ursalia 12-07-2001, 08:43 PM LoJack is a vehicle tracking system- you can find out all about, including places to buy it/install it at http://www.lojack.com.

DustinR 12-07-2001, 09:16 PM last time this came up someone mentioned that they had attached razorblades to the back of their radio. He also said that he was having a hell of a time getting the bloodstains out of the carpet. :)
Pluto 12-07-2001, 09:54 PM does it really work?
one of a sales person told me that it isn't that great. Area like San Francisco recieve no signal....
it will lose track once u drive into those area......:(
Anybody using it? any comment?
