View Full Version : New Info on Autometer Gauge Pillars for WRX
HokieEngr 09-06-2001, 03:54 PM With everyone saying 'we've got pillars!' and then leaving us hanging, I wrote autometer again this morning and I got an email from Zach at Autometer telling me the following:
"They are coming.... I just talked to our manufacturer today and he told me that we would have samples to show off at the NOPI Nationals this month, and they would be in stock in three weeks. I even got authorization to put them in the Gauge Works application sheet today. I have attached that sheet. Please be patient, we're almost there!!
Zach"
The attached sheet he sent me lists 2 applications for 2002 WRX
Part # 22592: Dual 2 1/16" Pillar
Part # 22593: Triple 2 1/16" Pillar
RidinLow 09-06-2001, 04:33 PM Damn, no 2 5/8"? That sux... :(

I personally think 2 5/8 on the pillar would be too much. I have a triple 2 1/6 pod on my Lightning and it does a pretty good job of blocking some of my visibility.
The only reason I can think of to mount 2 5/8 gauges there is for ease of reading. But, the 2 1/16 gauges are very easy to read on the pillar. I think that is why most pillar pods mount the smaller sizes. Center pods (like the Defi) mount larger gauges.
since they are farther away from the drive and out of his direct line of sight.
I am happy with the 2 1/16.......Just make them already!!! (and I don't even hay my Rex yet)

Valien 09-06-2001, 07:19 PM nice!!!
i saw a Mustang a few weeks ago with some Autometer a pillar gauges. Very sharp looking. Fit his car nicely and looks good.
I can't wait! :)
BTW, anyone know how hard it would be to install an A pillar pack?
Also, what size gauges would fit in a 2 1/16" pillar?

Zahnster 09-06-2001, 07:48 PM 2 1/16" is the same as 52mm gauges AFAIK.
Depending on the company, they sell them as 2 1/16" gauges(like Autometer) or 52mm gauges(Any country but US usually :))
newscooby 09-06-2001, 08:11 PM So now the question becomes...
Who's going to organize the GB??
Maybe we could coordinate this with a GB on guages...
Personally, I'd like the 3 guage pod and I'd fill them with a boost/vacuum, oil temp (or pressure), and gas temp guages.
Mike
lgkahn 09-06-2001, 10:37 PM I would like a two gauge pod with boost
and a dual oil temp/oil pres second gage..
anyone know where I can get the gauges.
thanks
Fred C 09-06-2001, 11:58 PM I've been away for 10 days, but before I left, Zach replied to my e-mail saying that that the pods will be ready "at the end of summer". I'm definitely gonna wait for these... I have a 2-guage 2-1/16th A-pillar replacement in my Talon and the fit and the appearance are excellent. Besides, Zach's done a great job on behave of Autometer to get my questions answered (re: gauges and gaugepods) so they totally deserve the business. :)
I can get the Autometer stuff pretty cheap from a friend in Vancouver (BC, CANADA) too. hehe. Lemme know if anyone in my area would like some once they're available!

Redline8k 09-07-2001, 03:19 AM Any news about a new hood cluster or new guage bezel for around the speedo and tach? I would really like this, like the mustang civic and integra...
thanks

subywan-kenobi 09-07-2001, 04:28 AM How hard would it be to just bore out the opening to fit 60 mm guages?? Can't be too hard, but I have never seen one without guages in it, so is there anything behind it like guage fittings that would restrict this move?? Anyone??

Alphanumeric STi 09-07-2001, 05:16 AM why do they only come in.. 2..or 3? why not only one.. i want a single piller pod to fit the turbo boost.. thats about it..
could u just buy the 2guage piller pod and cut it in half? lol..
will these pillor pods come in the same interiior color as the car? or would u have to paint it to match?
and last but not least.. is it really all that hard to install the guages wires\wireharness? like.. Tach.. PSI Boost.. vac. oil temp... or Turbo temp? iv seen a coupld of these guages in packages..and they only had a couple wires ..including.. ground and + for the light.. but what about the rest.. do you have to splice the rest
the picutre in my head is.. having a single pillor pod w\ boost guage .. and a tach in the left hand corner below the pillor pod.. more then 1 pillor pod would be to much.. id rather just custom fit a guage cluster under the steering wheel somewheres =)
Sherb 09-07-2001, 09:37 AM Why make a replacement pillar for just one gauge? Almost a waste, and 2 gauge is kinda pushing it. If you just want one, autometer sells those mounting kits for individual gauges that mount anywhere, similar to the Subaru's column mount.

Are they out yet?
ObiWanJak 10-09-2001, 12:47 PM Alphanumeric STi,
The wiring isn't that difficult, depending on what you want. There are directions on how to mount a boost guage on this site, do a search, I think under the FFI forum. Most people seem to be using the mechanical boost guages, which are super easy to hook up, all you need to do is buy a t-fitting (all described in the search) and hook into the BOV line, then run it thru the grommet behind your brake pedal. The nylon hose is included with most boost guages.
There are plenty of places to ground, almost any piece of bare frame works for this. Power is a little trickier, depending on what you want to do.
I am currently trying to figure out how to make the illumination of the guages dim with the dash guages. The factory system uses two wires for illumination, labeled + and -. I'm not 100% on how this works, any help on that would be appreciate (hello... anybody?). I think it uses 12V at max power, then as you decrease the brightness, it increases the voltage of the - reference line. I need to experiment with it, though. The easy way to get illumination is just to tap into 12V power, such as from the cigarette lighter.
As for the tach, it isn't that difficult to tap into the ECU for the RPM signal. Of course for power, you have the same problem described above (unless you like one brightness setting). I have a whole power point how-to file for how to hook up a tach of a shift light. If anybody would like it, just email me.

HokieEngr 10-09-2001, 02:49 PM I personally gave up on the a pillar and bought a VDO turbo gauge and cup from summit racing and will be attaching it to my steering column next week sometime. Total cost was around 50 bucks.

bdowell 10-09-2001, 02:53 PM Nationals were the weekend of the 15th, so last weekend made 3 weeks. Where they at!? Anybody got prices yet?
Eastwind 10-09-2001, 05:53 PM What about color of the pod? will they come in white and match the wrx interior color? or.....black?
-Bryan :)
Does anyone know of a company that is making a bezel pod?
Valien 10-09-2001, 06:20 PM bump! :)
i'm interested to know if Autometer has them out as well...
checked their site the other day (Sunday) and didn't see anything new.
Then again, their site is one of the NASTIEST in navigation terms.
i need an A pillar gauge pod! :)

joefong 10-09-2001, 09:17 PM there is an unused harness where the radio harness is. and guess what, its illumination! so just run the wires over there and tap into the 2 wires there for illumination. works like a charm
