View Full Version : My WRX rattles are cured!!!
Wheels 09-07-2001, 01:43 AM OK well heres how it goes so far. Took my car to another dealer and they said there is nothing wrong with my car. Except for a loose jubilee clip on the hose to the turbo.
I`ve cured my rattles.
My rattle at 1.5k - 2Krpm at 30MPH is the transmission fluid dipstick (rattles on the Turbo heat sheild). Hope this helps loads of you.
My rattle at deacceleration is infact my airbox! Was for some un known reason unclipped!
Now I just have my heat problem to resolve. I bought some tin foil and tape for now.
Waiting on my seat cover now.
lgkahn 09-07-2001, 08:14 AM your lucky you didn't throw a cel with your airbox uncliped..
I just put an k & N filter in there.. the little bugger is a bitch to get back together..
If it was unclipped make sure the back edge is under the lip..
I had to stick it under the lip and then slide the air filter in the
rest of the way..

Yup. Use a screwdriver to get a little leverage on the clips.
mtnfreak 09-07-2001, 10:15 AM Glad to hear it was only a dipstick that was causing all the rattle.
What kind of seat covers did you get? I'm looking to buy some for our WRX wagon. Dog hairs are a pain to clean.
Wheels 09-07-2001, 10:29 AM The seat as it is now is just a cover. My drivers one is un sown on the left side and they SOA are replacing it. Only its been 3 week now.

no_rex_yet 09-07-2001, 10:38 AM Wheels, is the dip stick what causes the rattle when you bog or lug the engine?
How did you fix it? Did you just move it around, etc.? Thanks!
Hanzo 09-07-2001, 10:41 AM I just put in a K&N filter a week ago and I still have that rattling/buzzing noise during deceleration. :(
Tex-WReX2 09-07-2001, 10:59 AM Wheels, Let me know your heat problem, I may be able to send you something to help. PM me with-
What you are protecting
exact dimensions
length / width / diameter
I have some wire loom insulation that is rated up to 2000 degrees f . It is used by the Coast Gaurd for lines that lay directly across exaust manifolds on ships. I will be getting another 5 ft piece this weekend from my friend in the buisness. I have used this on my motorcycle where my headers were contacting some wiring. Never had a problem since. It was an aftermarket system. Hope I can help.

If subaru supplied the seat covers- and they are unsown on the door side- its probably because of the side imapact airbags. As I understand, putting on seat covers is an absolute NO-NO, according to Subaru, since they will effect the deployment of the bags. They might keep the seats clean, but if they aren't safe, I wouldn't recommend them.

no_rex_yet 09-07-2001, 02:02 PM Wheels is THE MAN!!!!
Just came back from lunch break, and fiddled around with the tranny dip stick. Pulled it out, stuck it back in snug, and then turned it clockwise a bit, so the pull handle is pointed more towards the windshield.
Took it out to lunch, and NO MORE "stock rattle!" I was trying to bog and lugg it around 2nd gear, and it's gone!
"Fuel tank baffles" my A$$! I love my wagon so much better now! Feels like I gained like 50 HP with this "mod" b/c I don't have to let up on the gas when the nasty rattle hits. :D

I have a terrible rattle that comes from the passenger side, Pillar. It has gone to the shop twice now. The current plan is to replace the front passenger seat belt.
Wheels 09-07-2001, 07:56 PM Yeah like no_rex_yet said.
To remedy the rattle simply make sure its in snug amd that the handle is pointing to the windsheild. It wasn't the dealer who solved it it was me. I was showing them the turbo that was leaking and pulled it out and thought umm that was easy. Put it back in and put the handle to the windshiled and hey presto no more rattle.
But hey went to have my center caps changed and they scratched and gouged my rims arround the center. Umm I had to leave the dealership as the manager was on lunch and now I have to drive 90 miles back there next week just to let the manager see what the technician saw and did.
Oh yeah the tech said he's sorry.
Subaru`s going to say I use it for rally cross now. Man they thought I raced it because the rims where scrached.
Man will I ever get my car sorted!!!
mdntridr 09-07-2001, 09:44 PM Why, oh why can't this work for me??
I love my rex wagon, but dammit the car does the "stock rattle" in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. 2nd and 3rd are obtrusively loud without the radio on...
I tried the dipstick thing and no worky...I tried driving without the dipstick...no worky
So now I've replaced my K&N panel filter (which was a bit loose to begin with) with the stocker. I'll try it tomorrow. I'm trying to be optimistic...
Might be time for a trip to Exeter Subaru and see how the warranty service is there.
