View Full Version : Actual Crash Test for WRX!
SilverStreak 09-07-2001, 11:54 AM I'm a newbie and this is my first post on the board. I've been lurking for quite a while and finally purchased a silver WRX about a week and a half ago. I've been breaking it in and keeping it under 4000 rpm (which is extremely hard to do by the way). I had about 400 miles on the car and then it happened. I was returning home from work yesterday when a older lady in a 98 Lincoln pulled out in front of me. I was going about 45 mph and since she pulled out about 20 feet in front of me there was no way to avoid her. I swerved to the left as hard as I could but I still got hit hard and was sent spinning in the opposite lane. Thank God no one was in the opposite lane. Anyway I ended up backwards down an embankment about 20 feet off the road and 10 feet below it. The passenger side airbag deployed but the other airbags did not. The Lincoln hit me right at the right front tire, crashing both passenger side doors in, and then towing in the right rear tire pretty badly. The good news is that the WRX held up very well in the crash. I actually felt secure when I was spinning around and never felt in danger. The side impact bar held up great even though the door panels around it didn't. All in all, I was thankful I was in the WRX instead of the 2000 Nissan Xterra I just traded in. I would have rolled for sure in it. Of course it sucks to wreck a brand new car, especially one as nice as the WRX. The lady got a ticket so now all I can hope is that the car is totalled so I can get a new one. Well, I thought I'd let you guys know since there has not been too many first hand crash tests. And yeah I know, it sucks to be me.
Star*Child 09-07-2001, 12:03 PM Sorry to hear, SilverStreak. :( Glad to hear that you're okay though!
scoobagenie 09-07-2001, 12:05 PM i'm so sorry. as you said at least your wrx did its best to protect you.
Sergeant_V 09-07-2001, 12:07 PM Glad to hear you are okay. It's a shame someone messed up your car. Had she pulled all the way out or just nosed out into the street when your vehicles impacted?

viodea 09-07-2001, 12:08 PM I'm wondering whether you'll get a new car if it's totalled. I thought you'll never get what it cost even it's not your fault. Can someone explain how it works?
Adegon 09-07-2001, 12:12 PM As if the pain to wait for 1000 miles isn't searing enough, someone cracks up your brand new car because they don't know how to drive.
Your patience and understanding is a virtue, sir.
I for one, would have no problem making an old person beg for mercy.
I hope everything works out for you, and remember it is just a machine, however wondrous of a machine it might be.
And look at it this way, now you can have insurance buy you a new one, with a much better color. ;)
Ginseng 09-07-2001, 12:28 PM Yep, that sucks but at least you're ok. Here's your chance to get WR Blue...that's the real cool color.
Rebellion 09-07-2001, 12:49 PM where's the pictures? you know we're all vultures for accidents.... how come noone's in here asking to buy parts off you yet? I don't need any.. but usually the scavengers are all over these posts. Sorry to hear bout your wreck tho... I'm hoping for a good luck spell when I get my WRX.
I want a WRX not a WRECKS =)

SilverStreak 09-07-2001, 01:26 PM Sergeant V,
After I crawled out of my car, over my hood (ouch!), and up the bank, I looked back at the Lincoln. The nose of her car was almost to the yellow line. I'm lucky I swerved or I would have T-boned her and she would have really been hurt. By the way, she and her granddaughter(8 yrs. old) were OK but the lady had burns on her arm from her front airbag.
Chunky_Chicken 09-07-2001, 01:29 PM I know in Canada, the better insurance policies have a full replacement clause which basicly means if you car is written off and its within something like 6 months or 10,000km then you get the original value of your car back. Press the insurance company hard. And get a lawer to make sure that old bag never holds a wheel again.
Was she hurt in the crash? Did she even know it happened?

wow sorry to hear that. glad to hear all three people are ok. everything will work out with the car. nice defensive move.
totoherbs 09-07-2001, 02:23 PM that sucks soo bad man. Hope you get a new car, glad to hear everyone is ok.
mtnfreak 09-07-2001, 02:41 PM That sucks! Glad you're A-ok though. I hope you get a new car out it.
atroz 09-07-2001, 08:14 PM Bummer man! Now you may have to start your 1000 mile break-in all over again! ;-)
Chunky-Chicken, I've got full replacement on my WRX for 2 years, but I had to pay a small premium for it. I'm with State Farm.
Austin 09-07-2001, 10:55 PM Guess you gotta put your $.02 in...
So you just bought your new WRX, and wrecked it...read on... (http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73764&highlight=new+and+wrx+and+got)
philwang66 09-08-2001, 12:29 AM Yikes!
As everyone else has said, I'm glad noone was seriously injured. As much as it sucks to lose your new car, it's still only a car. I'm glad to hear the WRX did a good job in protecting the occupants in a collison with a much larger car.
Hope you make out with your insurance.

Hmmm, I don't know Austin. The opening post states,
"being rear-ended by an SUV doesn't count, nor side swiped by a Dodge - we're talking the big time driver error here."
I'm thinking getting taken out by an old lady in a Lincoln is in the same category as the SUV and Dodge case. It sounds to me like Silverstreak was the victim in this case and apparently the police agree as they cited the other driver.

Slvrblt 09-08-2001, 01:03 AM sorry to hear bout that dood:(
and with only 400 miles on it too, tis a shame

as the famous line goes- cars can be replaced, people can't
speed safely

Hey Silver - sorry to hear about this. I'm no expert, but my brother is a very assertive guy and has argued two times to have his car totalled - lease agents and/or even your bank can help put the pressure on the insurance company to total the car. At least this is what I think my brother said he did - don't give up and get yourself another new WRX.
Sorry to hear about your loss, bro. It's too bad that some people just don't understand how to be aware of their surroundings while driving. I'm glad that everyone involved is okay though. This is just another good example of why we need to adopt European standards to our driver testing processes. At least, in Phoenix, it would be a good idea. Out here, you have to be psychic, and anticipate what every idiot around you is about to do. The second that you feel comfortable driving in traffic is the second that some moron is going to cut you off, or do something equally stupid. Example: Just today, someone cut me off to go weaving through rush-hour bumper-to-bumper traffic with a Ford Excursion with a brand-new dealer paper license plate on it. Some people really need to be removed from the gene-pool for the greater good.
