View Full Version : Mysterious Trunk to Bumper Vents..

So, if you take the side covers off the inside of the trunk (pretty easy to do), you will find on each side of the trunk, lower near where the bumper is attached, there are these two black "dryer vent like" exhaust ports. They are about 4x4 inches, and they look just like those vents that are on the side of a house that a dryer uses to vent outside. It has the same kind of flaps that let air out, but not in.

Anyone have any ideas why they are there? I took all of the trunk covers out, the back seat, etc, so I can put dynomat on everything to quite the car down a bit.

As a side note, there is no sound deadening material on the inside of the wheel wells on the car stock. Adding the Dynomat or like covering there should make a noticeable difference in road noise..

Anyways, since I have the trunk/backseat open now, I can hear these little vents flapping while driving. Perhaps this is to relieve pressure in the car? To allow those dead bodies in the trunk to vent?

Mysterious..

Interesting ... be careful not to put any Dynomat in the front passenger side wheel well ... that's where the air intake for the silencer feeds in ...:)

No kidding.. As a general note, After taking off almost all of the interior stuff, doors, etc, I think there is some very good room to make the WRX much quieter. Most of the road facing panels are not covered in any way, and there are air gaps as well.

Power is great, but I also like a nice quite ride when I'm on the highway. I'll post DB measurement results as well.

I have a '91 prelude which has vents in the same place.

Nearly every car has a similar vent whether its a sedan, wagon or whatever. Its just for interior ventilation and pressure equalization.

Bet you didn't know that Woolite has an octane rating of 116! I usually put no more than one bottle in per tank else the Stromung gets pretty sudsy. :D

Get the heck out of here... really
What would be the use of pouring a bottle of woolite into your gas tank? Would it really have any affect if any?

Yup - there are little vents in the rear deck that lead into the trunk. When you bring outside air in, i.e; not on recirc, you need to exhaust about the same amount. Marbles in = marbles out :)

Those vents are what allows your door to shut semi-easily. Try taping over those vents and shutting a door w/the window up...

ark101, I hope you're kidding.

Never put Woolite into your tank...it only has an octane rating of 80 and would cause severe knocking. However, it would definitely keep the exhaust manifold sparkly clean.

I'm joking!!!

there's probably a hole in your trunk somewhere to the outside too, basically they're there for airflow into the trunk from the passenger compartment and then outside from the trunk. This is the way most cars are... I know Honda's are all this way or similar style.

Dude,

Don't believe most of the stuff you read here. Most of these guys are hard core and know so much already that they either post something stupid or make fun of people new to the "hobby" of cars because they are bored, mean or both.

Have fun, read lots, be leary and learn a little in the process.
