OK, maybe this is a stupid question, but where should I tap into when I put in my mechanical boost gauge?

It's for a 2002 WRX

I asked a Subaru Master Tech (that's won national awards...he knows his stuff) where to tap mine.

He showed me a spot (no pic, sorry) right behind the radiator, just off center to the passenger side where I could get the 'best' and most responsive readings. There's a little hose that you 'T' into but you have to lengthen 3 hoses to do it right....I wish I had a digi cam... :(

He was probably referring to the hose that goes to the fuel pressure regulator. While that is also a direct manifold connection you are far better off using the bypass valve hose as suggested. Much more accessible and easier to work with, and less chance of problems later on. The gauge will work just fine if you tap it there.
Note that when the optional Subaru boost gauge is installed, it is connected to the bypass valve hose.
