Yes you read it right,

about 3years ago i bought a stromung mildsteel dualtip from spd,
well i have posted a few times of why my exhaust has sounded funny well today i put it up on the lift and taped on the bottom of it and it sounded like alot of loose sand, found out that it was loose rust, there isnt hole in it but it sounds alot different than it used to, so my conclusion i will NEVER buy a mild steel exhaust again and those of you who plan on buying one save your money and get the full stainless its worth it...anyway wish i could send it back and get my money back but guess what. that prob wont work,

There's a reason people put stainless on their cars/trucks.

There's also a reason that companies make non-stainless stuff. People keep buying it, then it rusts out and they have to buy something new. Instead of spending $100-200 more up front, they'll get an extra 3-400 out of you. :)

Sorry about that, but what did you expect. Be glad you don't live in Michigan. I think 3 years would be a marvel up there.

So the stainless steel Stromungs don't rust?

If it's quality Stainless it takes a great deal more to rust it out. But there should be a longer rust warranty with Stainless anyway.

Greg,

Do you have to get a new exhaust now? If so, what kind are you going to get?

A stainless one could still rust....they should last a long time though.

My brother only gets about two years at most out of his exhausts before they rust apart on his Altima.

Stainless is worth the extra money.

BTW, Are you going to the next autocross?

My SS stromung is rusting around the welds and there is some light rusting elsewhere.

Keep in mind this is in a region with zero snow or salt on the roads.

I love the sound, but no way would I buy a new stromung. I may look into getting this one powdercoated or something if the rust gets really bad.

I had one on my RS for a year (1 winter) and no rust. Some tarnish on the tips, but thats it. To bad I cant get a 3" cat back from them, had to 3" cat back from Brullen. Love my stromung, what a sound!

my dual tip SS is rusting at the welds also, after a year. i also live in a city with no snow/salt, but there is fog here, and i'm right next to the ocean, so there is salt.

I've got a mild steel dual tip on my RS. I took it off about two weeks ago and found that the weld had cracked where the exhaust pipe enters the muffler. I got it rewelded, and added a brace between the exhaust pipe and muffler to minimize flex. I also punched a drain hole into the muffler so no water would build up inside it. Mine had no external rust after 1 year of use here in Seattle. The paint was worn off though, so I cleaned it up and repainted it. It does have some internal rust though. Hopefully the drain hole will help.

Chris, you can listen to my Stromung if I run into you again. Maybe if I make it to the next Rallycross.

Stainless does'nt really rust too much, the problem is usually the welds. That is where it will rust unless maybe it's chrome plated or coated.

Everyone loves the sound of the stromung as it is very popular, so get yourselves the SS. Any exhaust will crack and rust on welds just not the muffler and pipes. Right? I am debating this on my WRX as I heard it and it is soooooo nice but I have to make sure 2.5 is better than 3in. Any info on this PM me.

A long time ago I heard a decent sound clip of a Stromung exhaust. Loved the sound. However, at $345 for a SS single tip muffler (Legacy sedan), and all this talk about rusting (I live in the "salt belt" - PA) I am having second thoughts.

My question is, what other mufflers/exhaust systems closely resemble the exhaust note of Stromung, but are more durable?

Any leads and/or sound clip links, including the Stromung, would be awesome.

Thanks,

I posted about this about a year ago when people were thinking of getting the SS exhaust becuase it was SS. I read that the SS stromung was only SS on the outside and not the inside so i decided against it so i guess it turned out to be true.

I really don't want to buy a piece of crap, but this is probably one of the nicest and most popular set ups so I can understand why people are moaning about it. The one thing I can see is everyone likes the sound and quality of the fit, except for rust. I considered the 5Zigen exhaust but it really looks low to the ground. I need one to work with the diffy protector too. Any WRX owners out there that have an opinion about it???

Except for rust everyone seems to be happy with performance and sound right. How about any WRX owners?

haha no place can compare to Maine......salt central, but all this rust talk isn't persuading me a bit, I have heard way to much good stuff about the Stromung to change my mind, love to looks too, Apexi N1 i know gives off a good sound but just had to big fat cheap muffler look ;)

iON/Brullen exhaust parts are 16G T304SS, also carries a limited lifetime warranty. You pick your own tip styles (single 3.5", 4" dual 3". 3.5") and you pick your own acoustic preference (quiet/medium/loud).

Definately more bang for the buck then Stromung

You guys are going to love this...

Several of you had asked for sound clips of the stromung or possibly others. So here is what you do for some quality sound clips. Click on the modifications button on the NASIOC.com main page. It will automatically take you to scoobymods.com. There you will need to click on the GC8 section. After you get to the GC8 section, click on the section which covers intakes, exhausts, etc. If you do all little browsing you will see a thread entitled "exhaust sound bytes" or something like that. Several great audio/video clips.;)
