View Full Version : WTB: Local Cheap Beater around $1000
davisk6 01-03-2006, 10:21 AM A good friend of mine had his car stolen recently and currently rides his bike 5+ miles a day back and forth to to work. He's an ex-marine and has had a tough go of it since he got back a few years ago. I'm looking for a cheap, somewhat reliable car to help get him through the winter. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
iamrazor 01-03-2006, 10:24 AM my dad's selling his 92 F150 for about $1K. I think it needs a line from the tranny to the cooler, but other than that it works quite well. He's the original owner and its reg'ed and on the road. I think its got somewhere near 150k on it. He uses it to plow his driveway and go to the dump.
davisk6 01-03-2006, 10:36 AM Thanks for getting back so fast. What do you mean by "a line from the tranny to the cooler"? Also, where is the car located?
iamrazor 01-03-2006, 11:11 AM its a hose from the tranny to the tranny cooler behind the radiator. I think it has a small leak. I believe he was still driving it so its not dead. I can double check of you want.
Its up in Merimack, NH. Its got some old Apine stereo stuff in it. whoever buys it, I get one of the amps as a finders fee :)
davisk6 01-03-2006, 11:14 AM Thanks again. I am looking for something a bit closer to home. My friend lives on the Cape and I'm on the South Shore. But, let me know if it's still alive.
iamrazor 01-03-2006, 11:18 AM will do. its my dads. I've already emailed him asking for some more info. when i get it, I'll PM you.
paultg 01-03-2006, 11:22 AM You can bypass the trans. cooler (just tie the two trans. lines together before the leak). Especially if he is just going to drive it in the winter. Cut both lines, install rubber hose to connect the two lines, hose claps. Do it to the lines, and on the trans. cooler side (to keep crap out of the cooler).
or
Just cut the leaky section of the metal line out, and install a rubber hose to connect things back up. Then cooler is still part of the system.
Pretty quick fix, and cheap.
Jim Lecesse 01-03-2006, 11:28 AM i have a 89 isuzu trooper, 4cyl, stick, 4x4. it has around 50k miles.. i bought it wholesale from my work (dealership) it has some rust around the rear quarter, and the underside is pretty rusty but its all there. i drove it last winter, 4 wheel drive works mint. interior is pretty much mint. everything works
last winter the clutch pedal went to the floor. i know the clutch still has life in it, theres just no pressure in the line. possibly a bad slave cylinder or maybe a leak in the line (rusty). there is also a hole in the rubber gas line located right next to the tank, so once the pumps on it leaks a good ammount of gas. if your friend is interested, just throw me like 500 bucks or something. the truck starts right up and its actually driveable, prolly needs a couple hours and a $200 to make it right.. im in raynham, 20 min from the cape, 30 min from south shore..
iamrazor 01-03-2006, 11:29 AM well since he plows with it, he wants the line repaired. I'm sure for normal driving you can get away with a quick fix like that though.
davisk6 01-03-2006, 11:45 AM Jim: Thanks for that. The gas line thing bothers me though, but I'll let him know.
RSblood 01-03-2006, 11:49 AM I recently saw a Red/Silver 1993 Plymouth Laser RS AWD Turbo 5-speed with 140,000 miles selling for $1,299 somewhere in southern NH. Check Autotrader... thats where I saw it.
iamrazor 01-03-2006, 11:53 AM here's what my dad said:
"The line is broken by a union from the tranny going forward. Its too bad to drive. Its needs to be towed now."

Oh well. I don't have access to a tow and he doesn't have the money to fix that.
rjp: What about this GTI?

He's been trying to sell it. Send him a PM or something. I'll tell him about this thread when I talk to him next.
txl146 01-03-2006, 04:05 PM I suggest trying www.cars.com
MYfirst00 01-03-2006, 05:43 PM The small used dealer I contract for has a 1989 Audi 90 Quattro 5speed, I think 120-150k miles (can't remember exactly), gray leather, sunroof, pearl white that he wants to get rid of for $1000. Very little cosmetic issues, missing one headlight squirter. Only issue is brakes. May possibly need a brake cylinder or has a leak in a line. I plan on taking pictures of it for the Audi boards this Saturday if you're interested. PM me if so.

aimetti 01-03-2006, 05:55 PM My dad is selling my old car I used to drive before I got my 06 wrx. Its a 92 dodge spirit in really good shape for 800. Has a brand new muffler , battery , and had its front brakes replaced less than a year ago. 140000 miles on it.

Craigs 01-03-2006, 06:07 PM razor:
with a bit of work would the truck serve as a tow vehicle for a race kar?
craig
iamrazor 01-03-2006, 06:14 PM I dont see why not. I wouldn't tow cross country, but locally it would be ok.
I think its got like 150k on it and it was driven only by my dad + I
Craigs 01-03-2006, 06:15 PM Would it make it to Mosport or Tremblant - aka did you or your dad run drugs and will the dogs smell the leftovers?
paultg 01-03-2006, 06:36 PM It does good burnouts! ;)

This is the exact car he had before. Funny how things work. Where is the car?
rabbitnutz 01-03-2006, 11:44 PM 1984 volkswagen GTi. previously TMk's, before that DexterVW's.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b234/rabbitnutz/random/GTi.jpg
modlist that i can thnk of right now:
TechTonics cat back exhaust
Koni struts
"uber-stiff" race springs
stage 2 clutch of some kind
k&N panel filter, witch ducting from cold air input to atock airbox.
5" driving lights/ silverstar sealed beams
recent maintanance/repairs:
new axles
new axle hub
new alternator
new alternator harness
oil change
coolant flush
spark plugs and wires
dist cap and rotor
have new o2 sensor for it, can't get old one off.
needs:
exhaust manifold;current one is cracked. (leak sounds neat though)
headliner
dome light
horn to be fixed
shifter bushings (have two kits, that would make up one HUGE relpacement kit(ie, half of one kit and half of other kit would be used, some extra's) not installed)
Tires.
ebrake fixed.
that's all i can think of right now, and i'm askign $950 best offer. it's a blast to drive, and would make a GREAT parkign lot racer, or even a good beater to drive around in.
davisk6 01-04-2006, 08:21 AM rabbitnutz: looks good. Some questions:
Will it pass inspection as is?
How much would it be for a replacement manifold?
In regards to the shifter bushings, I take it the shifter works, it's just "not quite right"?
Is the headliner there, just sagging?
I can take care of the tires and I'm not too worried about the dome light.
rabbitnutz 01-04-2006, 08:35 AM probabaly won't pass inspection with the exhaust leak.
repalcement manifold at a junkyard shouldn't be more than $60, i was just saving for a header when i had it.
shifter works, just a bit sloppy.
headlner and a-pillar trim aren't even there.
davisk6 01-04-2006, 08:52 AM Hmmm. Thanks for the info. That does seem a lot of work, for me anyway, to get this car road worthy. I'm pretty limited on budget too. I'll keep you in mind whilst I continue my search for elusive lost beater of the ages.
aimetti 01-04-2006, 10:52 AM The car is at my dads house in Waterford CT
davisk6 01-04-2006, 11:22 AM aimetti: sent you a pm.
davisk6 01-05-2006, 12:06 PM Anyone else? I'd rather find something from here before I go the autotrader/cars.com route.
davisk6 01-13-2006, 08:33 AM Update for everyone, I bought y2k34door's Sentra for my buddy. If all goes well, he should have it by the end of the month. Thanks everyone for your help!
