Well, I broke down and bought one tonight.

Everything was working smoothly in the set up and all...but then when I go to sync it up with my computer, it works for a while, goes through all the syncing options, then once it gets to the Backing Up stage...I get an error on the PDA saying that it lost connection with my computer.

All I can do is hit OK on the PDA, and on the computer, the software is just plain frozen, and I have to get into the task manager and end task to close it.

Does anyone know what I could check and where to check it? I mean, everything does sync up in terms of programs installed and email and such...but it's still real annoying.

Thanks in advance! :)

I trust you bought a visor? If thats the case and you have a USB hotsync cradle, double check the connections.. specifically re-seat the visor itself, mine will lock up if I don't do it right.

Also, a fresh restart before hotsyncs usually helps...

If you bought anything else and were not high/drunk at the time.. you are on your own.. a man can only be expected to help so much ;)

I bought the Sony Clie

I felt it was the better option out there. It had everything i wanted, which includes the support for their memory sticks...

Anyway, I suppose I could check the USB in the back of the motherboard...because that's the only one I have any play with...

Thanks :)

I just bought one (a visor) last Friday myself. Anyone have any hints, tips, tricks on how to use and software kinda stuff? I'm not too good at that kinda stuff.

How do I get my new emails to jump in there when I do a Sync? I have my email account with Yahoo, will it work? I know that Handsprings don't like Javascript stuff.

I don't know much about the visors as ive never owned one. However in my year as a desktop support tech i ran into plenty of problems with them, mainly sync problems. Unfortunate because they seem to be a great product. I love the springboard attachments. Try looking on their sight. I seem to remember there were several software fixes not included in the software bundle for the usb sync. BTW i also heard, not to long ago, about a class action suit involving palm and their syncing hardware frying mainboards. That however whas just an email going around so i wouldn't hold much weight to it. Good luck with your issues.

any other ideas?

I'm not sure...but it seems to be the software on the PC which is the problem. I'll be trying this whole setup on my work computer, too...let's see what happens

I haven't really had any problems with my Prism.. The Prism came with the Palm Desktop v3.51 or something like that originally. A few months back, Palm came out with the v4.0 Desktop and it worked fine with the Prism. They then came out with v4.0.1 and Handspring came out with their version of the v4.0.1 Desktop, no problems with any of them.

So, no problems for me, you tried calling Sony yet?

not yet... but if it also doesn't work when I'm at work, then I'll try to contact them.

Like I said, it still does at least sync up all the information between the PC and PDA, it just gets messed up right at the end, when it's supposedly backing up the PDA data on the PC...or at least, that's what it appears to be doing.

Well if the faults not with your Sony Palm Clie thing, then maybe its with your host computer & its USB port ?

How old & what sort of a computer are you running?

My dad has a Palm (I dont), and I had the 'pleasure' of learning / teaching him how to hotsynch. No real problems, except the Palm email contact / address list is not the same as his MS Outlook Express. (Duh). I will never forget the expression on his face when I tried importing his e-mail & instead of getting his contacts, I managed to import over 200 useless emails into his palm. :)

Here's something I've picked up after standardizing our company with palms.
They Like to be on COM1
COM1 usually taken up by NIC
Pull out the NIC remove all software for the NIC remove all software for Palm. Shutdown, restart (no NIC) install Palm Software
If you are using USB cable, get the USB drivers for your OS. Win2K USB drivers are different than 98USB Drivers
Bump Sync Speed down from highest speed to 19200
If you computer has IR port enabled, disable it
Some laptops/desktops which have advanced battery support foils the Hotsync procedures
Remove any Antivirus software (reinstall after sucessful hotsync)
If your computer goes to standby/sleep mode, make sure to go into the BIOS and keep USB/Serial port on at all times
Worst case senario...you could
Read this (http://www.palm.com/support/hotsync.html)
Hope this helps

Another thing you may want to check is if there are any software updates/patches for the PC software. Check out the support section of sony's website for any frequently asked questions as well.

thanks guys! :)

Well, I came to work, installed it, and sync'ed it, and it's working fine here.

so...who knows. I will check things out when I get home...and yes, it's a USB port. I haven't tried changing the speeds or anything...
