So its my understanding that the AP stock map is just Cobbs version of a stock map. I'd rather be able to go back to the exact code that was original to the ECU if I want to revert to stock. Obviously I would have to unmarry to Cobbs stock map..then flash to the real one...

I see that there is a utility from Openecu.org called EcuFlash. It appears to be a simple plug in...push a button to dump the ROM to a laptop and then save it. Is anyone familiar with this? Is it worth it?

I was also hopeing to provide just one more measure of safety if for some reason there would be a problem when flashing to the Cobb maps. I have read somewhere that if there is a problem during the re-flash of the ECU, that you can use this software to flash back to stock provided you leave the key on and have a stock map backed up. Does this sound right?

You can find a tool at openECU.org that will allow you to save a copy of the program in your ECU now. Last I checked, it was a command line tool, but it's possible that someone added a GUI. It shouldn't be too difficult to do this, and it's a good idea if you don't mind taking the time. I wish I'd saved my original ECU program when I got my AccessPort, but tools like this either didn't exist or weren't as easy to find.

You should also be able to return to the stock ECU program with the program from openECU.org... be careful with that, though. It may have improved, but not too long ago, the flash function didn't work too well. It was good for retrieving ECU maps, but it wasn't as good at writing them.

Old information. I've been editing my maps and reflashing my car with a new configuration virtually every day for the last month. The current version of ECUFlash (GUI) has worked flawlessly.

Good to know guys, thanks.

When flashing the stock map back, is it as easy as selecting the file that you originally downloaded from the ECU and pushing a button to upload it to the ECU angain, or is there some manipulation of the original map file needed to prepare it to upload to the ECU again?

Don't really know why I am interested, as I don't plan on going back to stock any time soon, I just find this stuff interesting. Of course, the tool will probably change so rapidly that I will have to research again when/if the time comes ;-)
