View Full Version : just got my sti back from the dyno
kams#3 02-04-2006, 05:18 PM hi guys, i am new here and this is my first post but i just wanted to get some input and advice.
my 05 sti made 303 whp and 302 tq. with a turbo back (one cat in DP), cold air intake, Perrin FMIC, and Apex'i AVCR and AFC for tuning. i was very pleased with the numbers because my friend who has an EVO just made 307 whp with new HKS 272 cams.
i am planning on making my car ready for a turbo upgrade in the future, which is in a while. i plan on upgrading to a Gt35 with a .63 housing. i want to get new cams and Hyda. i was thinking about getting a ECUTEK for the mean while, so i can tune timing properly with the cams, and that way i will be able to run larger injectors. i also plan on getting alky inj. before i purchase a new turbo.
what do you guys think about the power i am making now, and my future mods running on a flashed ecu until i get a fully stand alone system like hydra?
thanks,
christ
PA-Sale 02-04-2006, 06:29 PM interesting... that seems a little low.
Typical 05 sti full TBE, and a protune is good for around 305 whp and up to 330 tq... FMIC is not need at all.. but for a turbo upgrade that is a good idea. i am not sure what you are saying regarding the cams and ecutek. hydra is a good way to tune though i agree with that.
Colin84 02-04-2006, 07:00 PM There are a lot of things to do before cams become necessary.
WolfPlayer 02-04-2006, 07:19 PM Your torque is a little low because of the FMIC. When do you reach full boost? My guess is that full boost is delayed somewhat due to the FMIC and, therefore, your torque is a little low.
Interesting choice on the AVCR + AFC. Definitely not the preferred method IMHO. Working with the stock computer would allow you to control the timing ... among lots of other stuff like AVCS. Actually, now that I am thinking about it ... the fact that you don't have control of timing and AVCS is another reason for your low torque.
I get full boost between 2800-2900rpms ... and that is with a cat.
Definitely think about getting rid of the AFC and going with a full engine management solution like the Cobb StreetTUNER. The AVCS might be handy with the bigger turbo in that it will allow you to have gear dependent WGDCs ... however, there is a wastegate duty cycle multiplier in the stock ECU that will allow you to increase WGDC below a certain mph threshhold.

kams#3 02-04-2006, 07:24 PM hey guys,
thanks for the reply,
yeah if i got a ecutek i wounldnt need the afc right?
also what do you suggest doing before cams, besides injectors valve springs, retainers, and head studs?
thanks again

......uuuuummmmmmm........suggest you do A WHOLE LOT more research before ya spend any more $$$ on anything.
It's a Subaru.....NOT a dsm...there IS a BIG difference in what is and does what for subaru's
First thing...ditch the AFC and get some proper EM....
hybooststi 02-05-2006, 11:28 AM yea i think your still stuck in the honda/acura scene, been there done that.
ditch the afc/avcr and go utec or cobb, hydra. your #'s are quite low but you definitely dont need a new valve train, do a lil research in the 2.5 section before you go blowing your weekly allowance.you can make 500+ on sti valve train. youre good once you get a proper engine management. then worry about turbo/fuel upgrades.good luck and RESEARCH !

Why are people saying his numbers are low without asking what dyno he was running on? If it was a Dyno Dynamics I would say they are not low at all for the stock turbo...but I don't know what dyno he was running or if correction factors were used etc etc...so I will ask, what dyno were you using?
kams#3 02-05-2006, 03:38 PM hi,
i was running on a dyno jet at AMS. i was pulling almost 20 psi in third gear though so i turned the boost down. if i decided to run a ecutek instead of the avcr and afc, whould i gain power and tq. from the 303 whp i put down, also what kind of boost should i be running with a ecutek for em?
thanks

You definitely want to go UTEC or Ecutek and you should net some more power that way (probably throughout the power band). How are you controlling timing? Proper tuning of ignition timing will definitely get you more torque and that can't be done with the AFC. Good luck and ditch that AFC ASAP.
kams#3 02-05-2006, 07:15 PM hey, thanks for the reply.
yeah it looks like i am going to ditch the afc because right now i have no way of controling the timing. what do you think i should be looking to hit hit boost at in a solid third gear pull with a reflash on the ecutek?
thanks
