A friend of mine had me take out his tumbler valves, weld up the outer holes, and port match them. He went to fire the car later and it would idle at 2k rpms... we checked for vacuum leaks...nothing. I believe its directly related to the fact we took out the shafts. What modifications/adjustments do we need to do to get the car to idle? Version 1.1 software on a 04 USDM STi. (I'm going to get him the 4.2 software here shortly)
Any suggestions? or UTEC revisions we should take note of? THank you.
(yes I searched)

Why blame it on the UTEC?
Do any other mods on the car prevent the car from being started *without* the UTEC?
Also, the latest version of UTEC firmware for the STi is 1.1c, NOT 4.2.

Check your IAC functionality and throttle body plate.
2K idle is indicative of electonic throttle problem.

ok that narrows it down. Thanks for the hint on the 1.1c!
Thing I did notice...the "drive by wire" tb WHINES something fierce with the car on acc. when you disconnect it...the whine goes away. we didnt modify the stock tb, tb plate, or IAC. I understand it all points there, but what exactly are the possiblilities? I mean...if the tb and IAC are connected and are not plugged or restricted then there *should* be no problem.
yeah we have 816cc injectors...which I dont think the factory ecu would be able to idle.
What about this... he had me *also* weld his MAF into his charge pipe(post intercooler and bov) The change in diameter would throw that WAY off IMO...and "could" be the source of the problem. It was originally teh TurboXS IC piping (2.5" OD) and he had it tuned previously for the GPMoto Intake. If this is the problem..which, to me, seems that it is(quite evident) how do I "calibrate" the MAF sensor with the UTEC? is this a simple procedure listen in the UTEC manual?
here's a picture of the bay when i was finished working on it. Note where the MAF and bov are and their respective locations.

Check your IAC functionality and throttle body plate.DBW cars don't have an IAC valve.

Interesting to know, thanks. I honestly didn't read much of the post. I saw 2k idle. A vacuum leak would be HUGE to do that and it would run like crap.
