View Full Version : What speed at 5th gear?

Continuing on the MPG discussion earlier, I thought it would be nice to know when people use 5th gear.

I've always shifted through the gears relatively quickly, double-clutching down when I need more power.
However, recently I've noticed quite a few of my friends (we're all fairly conservative drivers) stay in 4th on the freeway past 60-65mph.

For general driving, I'm in 5th after about 50mph and onward.

I thought it might account for some of the widely-varying milage people are reporting, between 17mpg and 24mpg, all without "spirited driving" or WOT. When do you use 5th gear?

In my dads car, I'll usually put it in 5th at 55 and up, but I'm still learning the stick, so I might do it earlier for gas mileage.:)

There's a fifth? I'll have to check that out next time I'm driving.

PS: Take that to mean I rarely ever use it, and get better gas milage than most.

I only ever use fifth when crusing around 75 - 80 mph on the interstate.
