Does anyone know if a dual stage MBC screws with the ECU's mixture/timing stuff?
I want one, but would run close to normal boost for normal operations and daily driving, but it would be nice to switch to a higher boost for "special applications".:)
I just don't want to completely confuse the ECU by doing that. ANy input from you tuning wizards out there?

a setup like this is built into every car.
its a throttle.
I reccomend tuning your car to the maximum safe level and leaving well enough alone. If you dont want to beat on it, dont floor it.
seriously though, single boost gauge, dual boost gauge- it dosnt matter. once the ecu see's more air than it knows what to do with it will start dumping more fuel into the mixture in an attempt to reach the factory a/f maps. Thats pretty much the problem with manually boosting this car, the ecu tries to compensate. Still though, a lot of people are running like this, and aside from some slightly less miles to the gallon seem to be rockin fine. *still a bit early to see any major probs tho*
i believe on the same site as the plans for the "garinger" valve (correct my spelling if its wrong) there are plans for a dual stage boost controller. Low/high throttle positions adjusting boost and whatnot.
lemme know if it works :D

I have a dual stage MBC that I made for $40, including the MBC, on my turbo DSM. I just change boost from stock to whatever I set the MBC with the flick of an electronic switch in the cockpit. Works pretty well.

I suppose this would not work with a turboXS type MBC that you adjust with an allen wrench right?
Is it too complex a design to post some quick instructions/diagram?

Yes, this will work any conventional MBC. The MBC I made/use is basically a replica of the "Joe P." style with a ball and spring. These MBCs are really easy to make with parts from a local hardware store, and are really inexpensive (I built mine for $8). I'm amased that more people don't make them themselves. I haven't connected a MBC to a WRX yet, but I imagine it's very similar to a DSM. I'll see if I can make a diagram of the Dual stage MBC for a WRX, and I'll post it here when I'm done.

Where did you get the vacum switching solenoid? I had a simmilar idea that I would like to check.
Thanks
Thanks very much, DSM, you da man!!:D

You can pick these up quite inexpensively at any wrecking yard if you know what to look for. Many cars use them to control operation of the EGR circuit. They are basically just funky little things with two wires and usually two vaccum hoses attached to them.

For the vacuum switching solenoid, I used an EGR soleniod made by Borg Warner, part number "EGR 201". It cost my $20 new from a local autoparts store. You can also find these at a junkyard if you want to look around, and save even more $$. Once you buy the soleniod, take it to an autoparts store and buy about 2 feet of rubber fuel line (looks like vacuum tubing) that will fit on the solenoid "nipples" (I think I used 7/32" tubing). I bought a plastic 'T' that fits the fuel line at a local hardware store (True Value). All the connections were zip tied for security. The wire I used was 16 gauge and I bought a switch to mount in the cockpit (Autozone, Radio Shack, Pep Boys, etc.). If you have more questions, feel free to ask. Also, if any of you try this on your WRX, let us know how it goes.
