Went to the track for the first time...wow, I am a bad driver. Flame all you want, I am laughing at myself too. At least I know I got room to improve. Keep in mind this is an STi with EM, TBE, TGV delete...300 whp (100 octane). Even stock STis do better. Here is a list of my bests...most, but not all from the same (last) run. I only wanted to 'drag' once, just so I would have an honest answer when asked about it...but I seriously gotta do better.

R/T: .504 (assuming lowest is best)
60': 1.921
330: 5.731
1/8: 8.847
MPH: 79.23
1000: 11.481
1/4: 13.756
MPH: 101.74

I did have fun though. If it were not so hard on the car, I'd prolly do it more often. I did manage to beat an evo on one of the runs though...that made me smile.

somthings seriously wrong with your car.

Theres no way you have 300whp and were trapping 101 mph. Stock STi's trap that.
I put down 350 whp and was trapping 115mph although ESX's dyno did read way low. You should at least be trapping 108-110whp. If your power is truly there your speed should show it. My runs when i went 115 mph were done with 60' of 2.0 and greater.

Were you on pure 100 octane on your tune? Were you half and half for your run? Something really isnt right.

Thats not so bad, Hell when i 1st got my sti and took it to the track i ran like high 13`s and even hit the 14`s once or twice, once i got it down i run low low 13`s

All you need it a lil practice on the launchin!! and play around with Shift points

The problem with what I see in your times is cannot be all bad driving. Unless you really flubbed something up, the MPH is not there to support the horsepower your car is supposed to be making. In other words, it looks like your car is down on power. The only other way to get such a low MPH would be to shift so slowly as to lose all boost between shifts, but that is really slow shifting.

Obviously you could rule you out as a factor if there is someone whom you know can drive well and that you would not mind handing your car over for a couple of passes (more expensive option would be to put car on a dyno), but even before you check this out my hunch is that something does not look right here with your car.

I think he's probably shifting like granny on her death bed. That would explain the abysmal traps.

You suck! :p Don't feel bad though. I would make you feel like a pro-rally driver if I got behind the wheel of ANY manual car. I hate manuals!! I'd rather be eating nachos and drinking an energy drink while my automatic puts the beatdown on my manual driving enemies.

So if I get a chance to drive an manual trannied STi, I'll post up my worst time(s) to brag that I'm teh winnah.

I definitely am not a great driver...but I'm not horrible. It may actually be the tune. A buddy of mine and I went out with the TARI after this morning's autox. He said I would briefly hit 18 psi (17.5 target) but by 5500 rpms was all the way down to 13.5 psi...that would explain the decent (not great, but not bad) launch, but slow E/T and MPH. Basically no top end power. Although I only wanted to do this once, it looks like I am gonna have to do some tuning and try again. Nonetheless...still dig the car :D

shemoves: what strip did you run at? there seems to be a consensus with the locals that firebird is a noticablly slower track than speedworld due to the prep.

i've only ran at firebird with 2 passes, definitly slower than E-Town,NJ.

is was firebird...but a whole second is a lot...esp. when its getting that low. I dunno...i'll try speedworld next time. What about 'prep' makes a track faster or slower?

Curious...what'd you manage to put down at firebird and what at other places?

track prep makes a difference on the launch, at e-town they have guys with flamethrower things to burn tranny fluid and oils spills. I think they even spray some sticky stuff down for grip.

at firebird i ran a 13 flat, havnt run at speedworld but at atco and e-town, i ran between 12.4-12.6s with my 60ft in the 1.79-1.83s.
id like to go an try again, but my turbo blew recently , so my v7 might see a td04 till i figure what to get :p

13.3 @ 103.something with a 1.83 60ft, with half tank of gas, regular air pressure in tires (factory 36/30) and a 260lb dude driving (yep, that's me) with a TBE and Intake (Typhoon), no EM, & full interior. First time drag racing ever and only time so far that day. Just wanted to see what it could do. Keep working on your shift points and launches, and drive that car like you stole it!!!! Also launched in full lock on the center diff on manual at 5500. I will change the settings this year to see if it makes a difference or not. Also gonna try flat foot shifting and working on my launches this year, spun more then is optimal I imagine on takeoff. Keep trying though, you're doing good. Have seen plenty of peeps put out 14s+ in their STI's (sad as %$#@ I might add) so you're in the ballpark at least :) My times might be borderline OK (for whatever reason, at least not that bad anyways), but I do come from a racing background. I think you're off to a good start and just keep reading what you can and practicing (finding out what works for you) and you'll be cranking off some sub 13s times or close with the setup you have in no time :)

I agree with the drive it like you stole it. Also, shifting sooner should help if your boost is dopping off. I managed a 13.8 in my WRX with uppipe, axle-back, SAMCO intercooler hoses, and ported TB, turbo inlet/outlet (TD04), and exhaust manifolds. My MBC was set at 17psi, but was dropping below 13 at redline. Even so, if I shifted a little better I probably could have managed a 13.6-13.7 timeslip. My first run was a 14.6, so practice, practice, practice...

perhaps shifting earlier is the key for me. I really need to run some more logs to really see what's going on, and take a look at my maps.

practice makes perfect...the STi clutch and trans are strong, don't over baby it...but obviously don't just drop the clutch and you should be fine

I think my launches are decent...do it at around 4k...slip it enough to maintain power. I think I got the tires loose on my last two runs. I got the loud clunk (rear diff?) when everything connected. Is this a sign that things are starting to go by-by?

Freon

That trap can be caused by granny shifting and/or not keeping your foot down in 4th and 5th.

With a bad launch (~1.9), moderate boost (16.5 peak, 14 redline), conservative tune (10.5:1), but pretty good shifting I'd do a 13.6 @ 101-102. This is pretty close to a local with a ~265whp Dynojet wagon, FWIW. So slow shift and I can believe you'd still only trap 101ish.

I got a few loud clunks on hard shifts before. I think it is more shift technique than anything. Try to get on the accelerator alittle earlier, and don't completely dump the clutch on shifts. It's a bit harder on the clutch, but might soften up the tranny shock. Watch out for knock. I recommend logging your drag runs.

You should be able to hit a 1.7 or 1.8. You can launch higher. I've made plenty of launches about 5000-5500 and if you do it right you won't smell your clutch afterwords. Slam the accelerator to the floor and use the clutch to keep RPM right at 4500-5000 for a about 3/4-1 second, then dump the clutch the rest of the way.

I can't wait for our local dragstrip to open up again. :(

I wouldn't worry about it for your first time out. That mph is a bit low for your mods and hp rating.

From experience, if you were spinning off the line, and spinning through 1st gear, that can cause the shoddy 1/8 and 1/8 mph. I know i've done it once with a poor burn out.
my usual 1/8's are 8.2-8.3 @82-83mph and i know i do not have close to 300hp.

But my point was that I got a horrible burn out once, with my tires still wet from the water box, and was forced to pull forward without giving them time to heat up, and ended up with a 1.9X 60' spinning off the line, and a 8.8 @80.4mph 1/8. the rest of the night i was going 8.2-8.3.

like others said just go out and practice.

I get a best of about 1.82 if I don't spin, and 1.70 if I do get some spin off the line.

I would definitely not recommend hitting the water box. Drive around it. The RE070's on a decent track at > 60F have all the grip you need off the line. Hell, a lot of people pump their tire pressure up to help induce some spin. I'd much rather get tire slip than clutch slip.

I launch with the diff on full rear, and when its cold out (less than 70 deg) I heat up the tires because I usually have to wait 10-20 min between runs and the tires are already cold. Cold tire=less traction.

Its night and day when you do a good burn out in full rear, which includes pumping the break to stay stationary and a good 5-6 second burn. You then have an abundance of traction, so much so you'll bog the first time you try it.

I average 1.70-1.74 launching. It would be better but the lag on the fmic is pretty annoying have to launch with precisely the right amount of load to spool the turbo off the line. I used to do 1.67-1.70 on the tmic.

and to add to your point. The "spin" your talking about is a short less than one second spin, I've had that too and it doesn't help my 60's it actually hurts them. I have to back off the throttle and get back on it or i end up with a worse 60.
The spin I was referring to was actually spinning through first gear. that included letting off once they broke loose off the line, then getting back on it and they broke loose again, and I just rode it out and grabbed 2nd. that kind of spin is what will cause the horrible time and mph I was pointing out.

Just work on, your shifting and launches and all will be well :)

But I'll make you feel better...

Evo MR vs Modded STi... Evo MR ran a 16.5, and the modded Sti ran a 14.5.

Both drivers grannied it into first, and granny shifted the track. They were talking about 12's at first... but after that run, they were laughed off the track.

hope you had fun...

holy crap. Thats pretty bad. It does not bug me *much*...the car is a hoot and turns great numbers with the butt-dyno. It is a combination of both driver skill (ala me) and some tuning that needs to be done to maintain boost past 5k.
