View Full Version : Front Diff for auto x
treefrogaz 02-13-2006, 09:44 PM I have a 03 wrx and i want to get a front diff because i hear that will eliminate the understeer "the push in a turn" I want to build my 5 speed up with ra 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear so i thought it would be a good time to change out the front diff.
Crazykev 02-13-2006, 09:54 PM I run an OBX helical front LSD and love it. Cheap and works great. I don't auto-X, but can tell that it pulls the car through the corners. From what I understand, running a helical front diff helps more with understeer which is why I decided on the OBX.
I used a Phentom Grip in the rear which works more like a clutch type which is what you want to run in the rear to help combat understeer. I really can't say that I am as impressed with the PG as I am with the OBX diff.
I would recommend the OBX to anyone. It is almost a carbon copy of a Quaife diff
OBX in the trans before I checked gear pattern:

Phantom Grip rear diff:

I also run RA gears. The ratios rock man!
Pacobeagle 02-13-2006, 11:28 PM I second that, only because I have an almost "identical" setup, ;-).

Quaife front LSD
Quaife rear LSD

treefrogaz 02-13-2006, 11:38 PM Cool thanks were did you guy get the diffs from? Also Pacobeagle1 have you ever auto x. I just want to know if this will eliminate the understeer before i spend the money.
Kostamojen 02-14-2006, 12:31 AM Its not so much eliminating understeer, but changing how the car drives...

Yeah, the front end seems to pull through the corners. Well, I guess that is eliminating the understeer feeling
treefrogaz 02-14-2006, 01:38 PM Cool well i will start looking around for a diff.
Crazykev 02-14-2006, 03:05 PM This is a list of distributors for OBX Racing:

treefrogaz 02-15-2006, 01:18 PM Crazykev did you build your trany or did you have some one do it?
Crazykev 02-15-2006, 02:57 PM I built the transmission and the rear diff myself. Lotta' work and a little frustrating at times. All worked out perfect in the end though! No oddball noises (from the trans, but the clutch sucks and rattles a bit) or growling.
Starkiller 02-15-2006, 05:45 PM Crazykev, I read in another post about you having problems mating the front axles to the OBX diff. It seems you overcame it. Since my transmission will be open soon, I'm seriously considering buying one.
What did you do to solve it?
Crazykev 02-15-2006, 06:05 PM The stubs splines were slightly damaged during shipping so I couldn't get the axles on. I took the axles and pounded them on then pulled em' off a couple times to straighten the splines. Sucked! Wasn't OBX's fault though. Just the jack off I bought them from. Some e-bay store.
Order them from a distibutor above and you shouldn't have my problem. The bearings pressed on perfectly and the ring gear fit perfect. No other problems :D

Starkiller 02-15-2006, 06:13 PM OK, cool. Have you replaced your own shift forks?
I would REALLY like to do my own work, so I need to know which tools I have to buy.
Crazykev 02-15-2006, 06:21 PM Yep! Just have to drive out a spring pin. Well, people here call em' spring pins, I call em' roll pins? Pretty simple deal. Swapping the shift rods kinda' sucks, but you don't have to take them out. There is an easy way to do the shift rods, I just didn't have a manual when I did mine 2 years ago.
Just don't go crazy on pounding out the spring pin. Do it in a bunch of lighter taps to get them out. Don't want to bend the shift rod or wallow out the case.

Starkiller 02-15-2006, 06:34 PM Ya got a PM Crazykev
treefrogaz 02-16-2006, 01:41 AM Im thinking about do it myself i just wanted to know the in's and out's about doing it. Im thinking about buying a manual to help me along.
Starkiller 02-16-2006, 07:07 AM I would recommend getting the manual before working on the tranny. 'cause if you screw something up accidentally, you wouldn't know what to do next.
WRX_orlando 02-17-2006, 01:41 PM Helical fronts are great for autoX, on another note, if youre looking for great gearing and wanna save a few bucks, I went with JDM STi gears and 4.44 ring and pinion.
