View Full Version : short shifter questions
erikm 02-13-2006, 11:54 PM I am specifically looking at the COBB adjustable short shifter kit for my 2005 2.5 RS. Just wondering if this kit actually shortens the length of the bar of the shifter or just shortens the throws? I find the stock shifter is quite long and sticks out too far. Will this COBB shifter kit shorten the whole shifter bar? thanks!

...the ability to control both the height of the shifter as well as the throw.

You can adjust both the height of the shifter and the throw.
The two pieces can move independently of each other.
fourdegrees 02-14-2006, 05:49 PM Better yet get a kartboy. Shorter throws and lowers the shift knob. No need to spend all that money on the COBB. Although, I do like the COBB because I like having the shift knob at its stock height.
nsucdm_wrx 02-14-2006, 06:41 PM I agree...save your money and get the Kartboy. It should do what you are looking to do.
erikm 02-14-2006, 08:22 PM Thanks all! I will be getting a Kartboy for sure now that I saw the price differences :)
MyloFMX 02-14-2006, 08:35 PM Hey Guys,
I recently just purchased the Cobb 6 Spd Shifter for my 2006 Sti. I installed it today and when I got done took it for a test drive and it worked great except when I let off of the gas. It makes an annoying rattle. Does anyone know what this might be from? It only happens when I let off of the gas. It will be in neutral also and still make the noise. Thanks for your time.

Did u check to make sure that the bolts on the shifter are tight??
i would go through and make sure everything is tight...
MyloFMX 02-15-2006, 06:10 PM i went back through it a millions times and so far so good.. no more rattle... although, is it supposed to be a little harder to shift it?

Yep, by making the throw shorter it will be harder to shift, a necesary evil.
MyloFMX 02-15-2006, 11:06 PM ahh i see... alrighty then... thanks for the help!

actually i think you have it too tight
my advice is to regrease all the pivots with some good bicycle grease and torque them to the correct spec. the center bolt should be from 8-12 pounds. its not much. if you have it too tight you will get the bind feeling you have now.
please feel free to go the link up top and then to our install page that Peaty did for us.

Turn in Concepts 02-16-2006, 12:12 AM in addition if you have the pivot bolt too tight you will blow out those bushings, and just making the bolt tighter will not work. you will need replacements, and I doubt there's any dealer that stocks those so you'll have to order them. Trust me, I've had a few customers who have been through this.
Spec is 8.3 lbs. One thing to try if you are still getting the rattle is to take a little bit of teflon tape and wrap the bolt with A VERY THIN wrapping of it. This should help clear up some of the rattle.
MyloFMX 02-16-2006, 07:00 PM Ya I think I did it too tight.. I ordered those bushing just so I can replace the stock ones so when I get them, I will do what you guys said. Thank you for the great help!
