View Full Version : Will Cobb tuning help with TBE?
clbd39 02-15-2006, 08:35 PM I contacted my local Cobb tuner and they told me that I would get no additional gain from professional tuning once the accessport is installed. Is this true? I thought pro-tune was supposed to dial in the accessport to my particular mods such as my TBE.
Thanks!
wrxdrvr 02-15-2006, 08:41 PM Most people seem to get more HP with a pro tune. I've seen other post saying 10 to 15 HP on average maybe more.
Don't go to that tuner. Any custom tune will be an improvement over the AP as it's loaded with generic maps made to be safe for a wide range of cars.
clbd39 02-15-2006, 08:52 PM well the local tuner was the P&L motorsports guy here on this forum... i was very confused when he said that because i thought a pro tune was beneficial no matter what basically even if all i have is TBE
i knew that the AP had just regualr tuning for stage 1 and 2 and so on... so yea, does anyone have any tips or a little bit more help on this?
Thanks again for your all's input! (gotta love the subie forums!)
clbd39 02-16-2006, 07:30 PM anyone else?! so bump for my sake! :P
wrxzboost 02-16-2006, 07:35 PM you might want to ask someone else at P&L, i don't know what's up with them lately but i asked for a quote on a cusco lip and they told me it's only available for the sti, not the wrx, LOL...and then they changed prices on me.
protune will definetley give you some extra whp...as well as give you a better overall tune to your particular car.
Brahmzy 02-16-2006, 08:13 PM Wow...false statement.
Most folks net an additional 25-35WHP/35-45WTRQ from a Portune on top of a Stg 2 COBB map.
Using 91 oct. @ 6,200ft uncorrected, I gained like 16WHP/26TRQ from my Protune and I specifically requested a very conservative tune.
GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!
kingtut12 02-16-2006, 11:22 PM I'm not sure who I spoke with when I called P&L, but the guy I talked to was rude. I guess he thought I was a punk kid looking for free advice for stuff I didn't buy from them. Oh well, I ended up buying everthing through PDX tuning anyway ($1600 worth) . Hate to bash, but its the truth and their management needs to read these criticisms.
clbd39, did you speak personally with Jorge over there? He has been very helpful, but I can't say that about the other crew member. Good Luck.
clbd39 02-17-2006, 02:56 AM um it was Rich K here's the exact pm....
If the car only has Turbo Back exaust you don't need tuning. Cobb AccessPORT comes with a map that would work with it.
We have one in stock, its it $595 shipped!
Well that's all and good, but if i want the protune specifically for my exhaust will that not be better lol? Yea i also heard somewhere around 25 WHP extra, which means bad ass stuff! but i mean i feel my car isn't feeling right just because i guess, it's tuned to the stock exhaust and i have catless Turbo XS TBE so i dunno how to explain lol i just don't feel it's getting maxed out or anywhere near it, make sense? Thanks all keep the posts coming cause i'm very un-knowledgable on this topic!
also i think my quote was $1050 for the chipping and dyno tune time (i think 2 hrs)
kingtut12 what were the added HP, WHP, and torque with those mods? also where do i find out more info on that particular set up?
dvang 02-17-2006, 03:02 AM honestly id take there advice minimal gains would be netted for the amount you spent on tuning. i wouldnt get a tune yet unless you were really gonna stop there at only a turboback.
and rich is actually a nice guy just really really busy ive bought from them b4 and if you were ever sitting there normally he has a million questions being asked of him at one time.
its a high chance your not going to gain 25whp on your car on top of the stage2 map with those minimal mods.
if you have a question i guess try posting in the midwest forum they can help answer your questions and riftswrx might be able to answer your questions better if you have anymore.
ALaDDiN 02-17-2006, 03:20 AM I just recently flashed to stage2 w/ an UP and a tbe. I am thinking about getting a protune, but what other mods would you guys say I should get before a protune. Overall, I wanted to get as much as I can out of this turbo w/out burdening the turbo/engine too much.
TXS or Sti tmic?
samco pipes?
anything I might be missing . . .?
dvang 02-17-2006, 03:29 AM ^^aftermarket intercooler the STI intercooler is to overpriced. id consider one for like 200max anymore and money better spent on a used aftermarket one, even the ebay special. skip the samco money on that can be used toward the TMIC. last thing i can think of is buy the tools and PnP everything you can get to easily.
turbo
headers
throttlebody
intakemanifold maybe
also tap the stock FPR for more pressure add a fuel pump and get an aggressive tune
that setup if done correctly should be nice and fun low 13s, insta spool
clbd39 02-17-2006, 04:37 PM so for me, with just the TBE, what do you think i should get, i'm not really wanting to get a bigger turbo or anything i'll wait until i'm out of college and get my STi for that, but if anyone has a guesstimate of what i COULD get and the HP and/or WHP gain from each that'd be awesome, or if there's another post dealing with this that would be good too, i'm too busy to search and search though lol
thanks a lot again!

I can't say I really see anything derrogatory about his comment. *shrug*
But he's right. Will you see gains? ABSOLUTELY! Will it be 25WHP? That all depends on how far off the mark your mod combination is. We've seen cars react to the basemap by flatlining AFR from 3k to 7k RPM. Needless to say... making dramatic HP inprovements on those cars come easy.
We've also seen cars that are within .2 AFR of what I'd do, so we're talking 5-10 WHP on those cars.

clbd39 02-17-2006, 05:29 PM so what sort of mods would you suggest i do before getting it pro-tuned? i was reading up on headers and it didn't seem to give much gain except for top end, and i wasn't happy with the turbo lag either, what are some other choices that would allow me to gain a decent difference in a pro tune? would you suggest headers? i'm sorta new to the WRX mods so what seems to work best and give the best gains, like i said before i don't really want to put in a bigger turbo and such
P&L Motorsports Inc. 02-17-2006, 06:34 PM Hey guys,
Ok, let me clear things up here a little bit, looks like we had a case of miscommunication.
I have given you the same advice I give to everyone;
Prrotune will always increase the performance of the vehicle.
COBB AccessPORT comes with maps designed for certain modification to the vehicle, for example STG 2 (up-pipe, turbo back exhaust, all CELs blocked) You can get tuned but you don’t have to. If you are planning to do more bolt-ons to the motor than hold off on the tune, accumulate all of the bolt-on parts you want, install them all @ once and tune them all at the same time. It is more cost effective. I know certain people have somewhat of a plan they follow, for instance they will buy certain part this month and maybe something else the next. If you get tune, any part that you didn’t have on the car at the time of the tune will throw the tune off and potentially may cause damage to the vehicle.
If you are going to stick with what you have then yes, by all means get tuned. But obviously more modification, the more power you will make.
As for the Cusco lip, Bailey quoted you certain price, but he was mistaken, he has called the distributor and called you back with the correct info. I guess we had the old pricing.
Bailey may sound rude over the phone, but he is a really nice guy, its way he speaks I guess that makes him sound rude- but really we are all about helping you guys out. We go out of our ways to support the Subaru community.
I hope this clears things up a bit, if you have any questions please feel free to call me. I will be more than happy to assist you- even if you didn't buy from me.
That is my job :)

k, Well heres the Facts, If you get a COBB AP, No you do not need to get a Custom tune. It reflashes your ECU to the mods that are described for each stage
Stage 2 = Turbo Back exhuast. W/ reflash
Yes, You will get a little more power out of the car if You get it tuned But it isnt worth it.
For one. No you will not see 25awhp, If You get it tuned the Tunner will Just smooth out the Map for you. Adjust some A/F ratios and You can get a little power from that.
Personaly I dont think that It is worth getting A Custom tune for Unless you get extra Mods. Like a Header. But even then I would Wait till you go with a Bigger turbo. ;)
Don't go to that tuner. Any custom tune will be an improvement over the AP as it's loaded with generic maps made to be safe for a wide range of cars.
And. I wouldnt say that. They do house One of the Best tuners in the US. ;)
And P & L Motorsports Is by far one of the More customer Friendly Shop's Rich will always try finding the best deals for Buyers.
Plus he has that cute Polish accent
clbd39 02-17-2006, 07:25 PM haha cute polish accent haha! yea i have done some research and i picked P&L as the place i want to take my car FOR SURE 100%!!!!! so don't think i'm bashing them at all, i was just told one thing and then told another and i'm all confused, but this is all clearing up now(from this post) which is why i started it and hopefully other people who are as dumb as me on this topic will be helped also! but i definitely want to take my car to P&L just need to get some more mods i guess, so what will give me the most WHP mods? does anyone have a simple list ? lol, yea right simple haha!
but in all seriousness (is that a word) i do want to add some mods but i don't want to go through adding mods that will cause me to have to work on my car and get it specially maintained because i'm in college and have no time for that... so what are some mods that will make it worth getting pro tuned (i just want that so it's specific to MY car and will get it to it's full potential) so yea... keep posting away! this is really helping!
hopefully rich will post again because i understand the words he uses and he goes into depth! :) thanks!
BlackSnake 02-17-2006, 07:30 PM You could go with A bigger Top Mount Inter Cooler, Sti Pink Injectors, and A vf34 turbo.
that will give you some power. You can get tuned for it. and It wont be Hard on your car at all. :)
-Bogus
P&L Motorsports Inc. 02-17-2006, 07:44 PM Certain cars run stronger the other. I have seen people with TBE, intake and a pulley make almost 240 AWHP.
I would recommend:
-Intake system (they are some you should stay away from though)
- Inlet hose
-headers or port match your stock header
-pulley
-inlet hose
-IC hoses
= your basic bolt-ons. Give me a call and I can assist you further. :)
Beyond that, obviously a bigger turbo, injectors, TMIC or FMIC (depending on what turbo), fuel pump, fuel rails etc.
If you have any more questions feel free to drop me a PM or e mail (Rich@pandlmotorsports.com) or call.
Cheers

clbd39 02-19-2006, 02:01 AM well actually i have an AEM short ram intake (the guy that had it before me put it on...) but i was told that the intake is pretty much useless on my car because it's drawing heat from the turbo and it's useless for wrx's with less than 300hp, is this true? i've seen two sizes of it too, the one i have and a smaller version on another 02 wrx i am not sure if i really like the short ram but, it's on there and came with it, and i have a buyer for it already (i think still) so would a CAI be better? or what kind of intake do you suggest Rich? also i may be sending you an e-mail but then this could also help people by having it on the forum and answering my dumb person questions ;) (i admit it)
so what sort of headers (price also) do you suggest and what is ther HP output alone?
what kind of pulleys, would they just lighten or will they add significant HP?
thank you again!
clbd39 02-20-2006, 10:02 PM so instead of headers what else can i do?
Uncle Scotty 02-21-2006, 09:15 AM My '06 with a v7 STi TMIC, and Stromung shorty DP->stock last cat-> 3" out the back Stromung single tip and OTS 93 octane AP stage2 is at LEAST 25WHP stronger than it was stock....no doubt.
I am kinda shocked at how much power the car makes ....below 4500 ;)
RiftsWRX 02-21-2006, 09:35 AM (i just want that so it's specific to MY car and will get it to it's full potential)
If you're looking to maximize what you have then YES, a protune will benefit you. Especially if you're looking for maximum reliability.

I think what we need to clear up here is if he's running a 2.0 or 2.5 (as his profile doesn't exactly say which). That would play a huge role in "guesstimating".

dvang 02-21-2006, 10:55 AM well nasioc is the place to earn your degree in guess-o-nomics so we should all be pros here
clbd39 02-21-2006, 12:18 PM Sorry, i have an 02 wrx, so 2.0
i'm new to the modding aspects and as i stated earlier, i want some extra horsepower in my car, and headers almost seem like the most cost will be the install, so what else besides that what else could i mod to get more HP besides a bigger turbo? basically this is so the protune will be worth it
Balishag 02-21-2006, 12:23 PM Sorry, i have an 02 wrx, so 2.0

besides accessport, dp, and catback (stage2).. u dont have too many other "cheap" options for extra hp. i dont think headers will give u a noticeable difference for the money spent. of course turbo upgrade is gonna net u the highest gain.. but that is something u dont want to cheap out on
clbd39 02-21-2006, 02:06 PM well the main reason i don't want a bigger turbo is because when i sell my car (next 2 or 3 years) i don't want all that stuff on it and the person buying i wants a stock car, also i don't want to have to keep up on it and make maintainance cost more.... make sense?
RiftsWRX 02-21-2006, 02:32 PM also i don't want to have to keep up on it and make maintainance cost more.... make sense?
Then honestly leave the car stock... seriously!
If the least amount of maintenance necessary is what you're really shooting for. Leave the car alone!

I would put an aftermarket TMIC at the top of that list with proper seals/shrouding/hoodscoop.
BlackSnake 02-21-2006, 04:01 PM I would put an aftermarket TMIC at the top of that list with proper seals/shrouding/hoodscoop.
I personaly dont think its worth going Bigger TMIC unless you Upgrade your turbo.
clbd39 02-21-2006, 05:51 PM so do you think it'd be worth it to by an AP?
hondaeater69 02-21-2006, 05:55 PM so do you think it'd be worth it to by an AP?
i was under the impression you already had the AP, and your question was regarding a custom tune vs OTS map.
I vote yes, get a protune. Thorw all the mods you want on your car and go get a tune! and a TMIC will allow you to run more boost, safely, with less pressure drop than stock. . .win-win-win.
STirocket 02-21-2006, 07:52 PM I'm only at Cobb stage 1 and have a different car, but I think the AP is well worth the investment for someone who doesn't want to go hog wild with mods. I've read many times on NASIOC where WRX drivers were extremely pleased with the gains from Cobb AP Stage II and a turbo back exhaust without any further tune... :)
clbd39 02-21-2006, 10:10 PM sorry newb questions, what's TMIC?well i'm planning on getting the AP soon i was just wondering that best thing to do, damn i just want my car put on OVERHAULIN' lol let chip foose take a whack at it and all my troubles will be over! haha, but yea i specifically wanted my car tuned to specifics but before that i guess i'm needing more mods so the money will be worth the tune....
clbd39 02-28-2006, 01:11 PM oh top mount intercooler nevermind
