View Full Version : What the hell do I have here?

Just received a used engine here at work. Supposedly it is a 98 EJ25. The intake manifold, a.c compressor and exhaust header are rather different.

The compressor is smaller, intake manifold looks more like a 96ish Outback and the header looks a lot like the header on the new 06 Impreza 2.5, or perhaps a turbo, but it is equal length. I'll take pics later, I am pretty sure it is not a U.S spec engine. Any thoughts?

Ben.

I've seen a few of those. They are JDM Forester engines. They are generally the HLA heads like the '96-97 DOHC Ej25's we got here, and phase I...

Thanks Matt,

The long block is going into a 98 Impreza RS, I am pretty sure it will work (after we swap intake & exhaust manifolds, water pump etc...)

Weird thing is it came out of Virginia!

Not a 2.5 with AVCS, it is supposedly out of a 98 Impreza.

Any intact VINs?

sure looks like that manifold has an upward slope to it, maybe they just use the DOHC turbo cross member in Japan and route the exhaust over the cross member instead of under

That's what I was thinking.

its gotta be a turbo headder it looks to bolt up to a standard up pipe

the flange is in the correct place

have you done a compression check?

Compression is good.

The engine is definately not from a turbo car, there is no oil feed or return ports for it.

The water pump is a turbo style but the secondary coolant feed port is not drilled out.

Also it is standard piping underneath the heatshields, it is not a cast item.

Thats what I was thinking,
or perhaps it is from a Aussie spec fozzy and they route it up and over to increase ground clearance.

those motors hang out all the time in usa JDM engine depot warehouses. supprised noone here has played with one.

wonder what it takes to run that funny mani. someone should..

This is an NA manifold. I don't know for sure exactly which engines this came on but the EJ20D was one of them. They had to use a water pump that fed from the front instead of the bottom because of the exhaust. All the exhaust that come around the front use the front fed water pump. I was under the impression that the exhaust went under the crossmember, but after HndaTch627's post I'm not so sure.

How much do you want for it? I was looking at doing somthing similar so I can go ahead with my cross member swap.
