I have just purchased an IMPREZA 1.8 2WD L and i am new to SUBARU. I need some opinions on how to make it a better car. i was thinking of doing an

-AWD swap / or 2wd with rear disc brake conversion
-engine transplant.

I need more info on doing the AWD SWAP and is it practical ?

Which engine do NASIOC members recommend ?
EJ22 ? EJ25 ? EJ20T ?

What do i need for the following engines ? as in terms of wiring and things ? i heard that it is a pain to wire EJ20T

Finally, WHERE CAN I GET THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL FOR the impreza ?

PLEASE HELP .... THANK YOU

The ej251 out of the RS is probably the easiest swap you can do. I did that swap to your exact same car. Piece of cake.

I swapped an '01 RS motor into my '93. Easiest swap in the world. If you convert to AWD, be ready for a LOT of work. I think it's worth it, but it all depends on your point of view...

thank you again for the tips,
does awd conversion require alot of work ? or all bolt ons ? to convert to a 2.5rs do i need to do alot of wiring ?

can i work on the car without a huge hydraulic lifter ?

very little wiring needed.. There is some, but its pretty straight forward.. Theres a decent amount of info out there on it. This is of course using the 1.8ecu and wiring for the 2.5 engine.

You have to wire up the coolant temp sensor to accomodate the 2.5rs. involves using the RS plug, and taking the 2 sensors from the 1.8 and combining into 1 plug. Its easy.

The injectors you have to fiddle with the plugs. easy.

use the 1.8 throttle body on the 2.5 intake manifold.

I took the time to wire up the coil for the 2.5, instead of using the 1.8 coil and ignitor and getting custom plug wires made.

Otherwise, its pretty straight forward. the engine drops right in, you can use the accessories from the 1.8 on the new engine.. its cake.

i saw one from an 02 for sale in the classifieds. Make sure you get the engine harness with it. :)

would an 02 engine swap as conveniantly as one from a GC chassis? wouldnt he still want to use the 1.8 engine harness and sensors if hes using that ECU? i used my 1.8 engine harness on a turbo motor and yeah, its really easy if your not changing the ECU

i would think the 02 is the same.. Just a few differences. If it were me, i'd go pre-02. Mine is from my 01 RS. I used the 1.8 engine harness, but used a few of the connectors off the RS harness to utilize the 1.8. Like the coolant temp sensor plug, and injector plugs. :)
