i have changed twice on Joyce's car....only has 34,700km....:)

your OWNERS MANUAL! Who would have thought about that. All that info like the type of bulbs, fluid volumes, fluid types, etc. would be located in a handy-dandy little booklet that very few of us read.

Anywayz, Canadian Tire is also having a sale on Mobil1 oils. I saw the ad - 10w30 is on sale for $24.99 or something like that -- can't remember exactly.

just like oil change....there is a drain plug, ATF filter ($40 to $45 but u don't have to change it every time), and dip stick to top up the fluid....

u need a funnel w/ long "tube" though....:)

Joe: If you are burning oil you should try another brand. I've heard that some guy was burning oil when he used red line and he switched over to motul he stop burning oil.. maybe you should switch to another brand and try.

I've changed my trans oil today, drained off roughly 3.6L trans, same as last time if I remember correctly. Because most of the trans oil will stay at the TC and the oil filter. there's no need to change the trans oil filter, so don't try to take it off to drain more oil off.
get 4L for is about right.

I am sure it's 3.6L, I did it at the bodyshop though.

help :) this is something i'd really want to do !

Let me clarify .... the oil burns naturally in the turbo bearings. I am not one of those guys that launched his WRX (and its rings) off the dealership lot with a cold engine. :) After 2,000km or so my oil has the colour (though not the consistency) of molasses -- a sign that things are HOT under the hood.

Oddly, Subaru USA recommends oil changes every 12,000km while Subaru Canada says to do it more often. I put it on my to-do list at around 6,000km, which means it usually gets done a few months later. :)

But yeah, Avenger is right on the money. A very good oil like Redline can have so much "affinity" for metal that it seeps past the ring seal and therefore burns up. I use Mobil-1 just because it's cheap compared to the really good stuff. If using dino oil, the turbo will become a tar factory. :)

Sigh. Life was so much simpler and more fun in the N/A days...

Devo: RTFM!!! The owner's manual has a diagram of the AT that shows the location of the drain plug (it's on the driver's side under the floorboard). Pop that sucker off, drain a whole mess of fluid, and make sure to wipe the plug before you put it back on because I believe it is a magnetic type (or maybe that was just the diff plug). Refill from the dipstick, and expect that the car will take more than a litre less because a lot of ATF remains in the torque convertor.

Warning #1: synthetic ATF and dino ATF can sometimes be a little incompatible. Remember that you will have 7 litres of synthetic and 1 litre of factory fill in there. Change the ATF again as soon as possible to get more synthetic in there.

Warning #2: the car does not like some kinds of synthetic ATF. The friction characteristics have to be within a very close tolerance. Too much lubrication and the clutches can be slow to engage, depending on how much friction material is left. Try this after changing your ATF: warm the car, then accelerate full-throttle all the way into 4th gear. If the 2-3 or 3-4 shift is slow -- or worse, the engine revs in between shifts -- then you have a lack of clutch engagement. Solution #1 is to get a new valve body that increases line pressure (Level10). Solution #2 is to put new clutches to replace the worn ones (major PITA rebuild). Solution #3 is to change to another ATF that is closer in characteristics to the factory fill. Your call. :)

Remember that our trannies were designed and tooled sometime in the 80's and were designed for the ATF of that era.

I'm just wondering.. I've seen someone posted a picture of under their auto tranny/engine and I saw an external oil filter comming off the side of the tranny, like an engine oil filter. Is it really external?

No, internal filter located in the drain pan. There are ports where you *could* attach an external filter, or more likely, an oil cooler. The filter is a mesh type ... so you could theoretically just throw it in your dishwasher and re-use it. :D (not recommended)

So next time somebody comes into your shop and asks for a Subaru AT filter change, you can just smile and give him the estimate. Muhuhuhaha. :D

haha....i am pretty POSITIVE that GC8 has an external ATF filter....i have changed quite a couple....all of them are MY99+....

umm....but if i don't remember wrong....MY98 or before doesn't have any....coz last time when i was working on STi-066's car i couldn't find it or sth (i don't have good memory on this)....

and i am pretty POSITIVE on those AT GC8 (MY99+) ever changed fluid....they all take more than 5L but less than 6L....again....i don't have good memory on STi-066's car which is MY98, US spec....:)

i can still remember the very first time i worked on Joyce's car....

i thought it takes about 1/2 of the tranny can take (i think i read 9.3L somewhere) so i bought 5L....then it's still less than 1L low so i have to buy it again....:)

I seem to recall seeing an external tranny filter on the subie, though I wasn't really looking at it. I know saturns have an external one on their auto. looks exactly like an oil filter. sounds like a good idea to me.

only place left is at Cambie and 7th and Burrard which are both too far for me....:(

Yeah, once the Mobil1 goes on sale, it disappears quick!

Walmart @ Lougheed also sells Mobil 1, but they're frequently out of the large 4L jugs of 10W30 or 5W30.

So keep yer eyes open for them Canadian Tire flyers! They may be affectionately known as "Crappy" Tire, but they do have some good stuff in there once in a while!

Usually these flyers come out on Wednesday or Thursday -- check those "local" free papers that always come to your front door, cauz that's where I found it.

haha....that's the BLACK filter i replace all the time....

at least first time switching from conventional oil to synthetic....:)
