View Full Version : Searching
Scooby14 09-23-2001, 02:13 AM I'm a little disappointed at the lack of cooperation people have been giving fellow members. It seems that anytime there is an inquiry about something, people like to come on here and just type "Search." How disrespectful. Please, speak your mind and help people out. I'm sure that those posting "search" are more experienced than those that are asking the questions. It's obvious that these people need help, so if you can help them, help 'em out. :D
IMPREZA GUY 09-23-2001, 02:21 AM disrespectful??? hmmm ummm maybe they are tired of people asking the same question over, maybe that is why they say SEARCH. But lazy people like me just keep trying to nag and not search, but when you do search, you find lots and lots about what your lookin for, maybe you should try it. :D
P.S., i am not trying to flame you so do not try to reply at me with some harsh words
Scooby14 09-23-2001, 02:33 AM No problems here bro....just wondering cause I got that response once and when I did a search, it took me like 10 minutes to find the right post. Just asking people to help out a little more. I think we have to remember that there is a constant flow of new people in here and they haven't seen all of the post that were made earlier, and have questions...
I don't know...just speakin my mind...I ain't mad at cha!!:D
Silver_Bell_WRX 09-23-2001, 03:00 AM Yup I myself have used the search function before and ended coming up with about 20 threads of none related topics and 1 that had what I wanted. The search function is a good idea and all but some times I would rather have the subject brought back up starting over with a fresh bunch of replies.
Kostamojen 09-23-2001, 06:05 AM Some questions are new, and some are repeated over and over and over and over and ove and over and over and over and over again... ("when is the STi coming out?" for instance)
And besides, if your new, you need to read some of the old topics on the board to know about the "history" of it and get some background before you start posting and making mistakes like that :p
So sometimes a "Do a search please" is needed to put that person in their place.
SubEd 09-23-2001, 07:06 AM I second that.
"This is my first post, when is the STi coming?" gets very tiresome. Do a little reading, see how things work, etc.

Very true. When I first got on this board I set the "display threads starting" to "from last year". It took me well over 6 months from the time I stumbled across impreza-rs.com to actually registering.
It was worth it though.

brunetmj 09-23-2001, 11:18 AM I have mixed feelings about telling others to do a search. I think that it is more about how this is done rather than the message itself. There is a difference between saying “hey idiot do a search” and “ a “ previous discussion has been very helpful and a search may give you better information” . I generally give any answer I have and then suggest in an polite way that the search feature can give a lot of more helpful information. I agree that people need to be a whole lot more sensitive to newer members.
Scooby14 09-23-2001, 12:13 PM That's what I'm talking about. It seems that when a question is brought up, and people don't want to answer them, all they do is type the word "SEARCH":(
Vineet Singh 09-23-2001, 01:29 PM Maybe a combination of the word "Search", along with some examples of links that pertain to the question would make this method seem better?
I'll probably ask a question deemed stupid enough to warrant such a response, but I won't feel as bad if the other person didn't appear as lazy as me ;)... I mean, hell, any lazy person can type in the word "Search" and think their job is done :)
You help me now... and maybe we'll help you later. That's what it's all about isn't it?

North Ursalia 09-23-2001, 01:55 PM It's just as lazy to not search ;). Most of the time, a reply of "search" involves a topic beaten to death. If it has been posted enough to look through 2 pages of a forum and trip over it 4 times, there is no reason to reply with the answer again. Having someone post "search" and then provide examples is self-defeating... it's just doing work for the person who won't or didn't yet do it themselves.

Tkacik 09-23-2001, 02:46 PM I always try and provide a little information, then I tell the person that If they need more info just to do a search. I really hate the "Ugggggh this has been covered many times..do a search"
Vineet Singh 09-23-2001, 08:55 PM Brian, good points, but people learn by example :) Hell, I had some trouble finding the search button myself on this forum. Perhaps it can be made into a graphic, or larger font/bold? It's only in one spot afaik, and can be overlooked easily by a newbie, since the "meat" resides a few scrolls below the lil "my profile | register | search| etc, menu.

I think you said it the best!!! Good job. Give the person a little help and suggest a search. YOU get a Subbie star :) . I find it rather insensitive when people just blow off the newbie with go do search. Everyone starts off new, Its not in the best intrest of the board to to scare or anger people away. Thank you for being a real person.
