View Full Version : Knock, knock, knocking.. 05 STi | UTEC
Timmy Burns 02-20-2006, 03:29 PM -Tuned at Turbo Trix in NJ. I left there knocking. I called them and the told me to turn down my boost. I did.
-Still knocking. I turned it down MORE. This seemed to get rid of the problem.
-Added alky. Leaned out fuel on a dyno. 12:1 AFR's across the board. No knock.. until a few weeks later.
-More road tuning with my UTEC. Seemed to get rid of the knock. I did pulls in all gears from all RPM.
-The knock comes back. I turned off alky, went back to the base Stg2 UTEC map, up'd boost 25 on all load sites and timing 1 degree on all load sites. The knock left, again.
-Last night it came back again. I feel that I'm running pretty freaking conservative. I really don't want to have to rip my motor apart to see what the problem could be.
Any suggestions? Should I change the plugs? Could an injector be clogged? WTH is wrong with my car!!
I'll post some logs later tonight. Thanks in advance guys.

cdvma 02-20-2006, 04:29 PM Is it getting progressively colder where you are?

Stock block EJ257. TXS Stealthback, stock axle back, running base map right now. The only changes I've made would be +1 degree timing on all load sites and +25 on all load sites for boost value. Logs to come later tonight.
Is it getting progressively colder where you are?
Yes.
cdvma 02-20-2006, 11:16 PM Changes in temperature will effect the air/fuel ratio a good amount on a MAP based engine management like the UTEC. Thats why they have added temperature compensation into the lastest WRX firmware. Hopefully it will be out for the STi soon.
Basically since its getting colder you are experiencing swings in AFR which is why it could knock...then be fine...then knock again ect.
i think your first problem was getting your car tuned at turbotrix.
go over to the tri-state forum for some input on turbo trix. more then a few unhappy subaru customers leaving with very odd tuning sessions.
did you have any knocking before you went to turbotrix?
ride5000 02-21-2006, 04:15 PM how did you road tune? have you got a wideband? also what are you knock thresholds and parameters in the utec.

I'm regretfully aware of that now. Unfortunately the damage may already be done.. :(
I didn't experience any knock before TurboTrix.

I don't have a wideband. I loaded the base map and made a quick rip, bumped up boost 25 points and timing 1 degree. Upon more driving, it started knocking again. I just got back in from more road tuning. I have the boost values set at 375 from 0-3000RPM then 385-395-400 as it reaches 3500-4000RPM.
I don't know what the thesholds are on the UTEC. I've never changed them, or set them at all for that matter. What should they be set at? What is too extreme?
While road tuning today, we did a pull in 5th gear from about 3000RPM. As expected, boost creep set in as boost crawled to 19psi (previously the max was 16psi) and at about 5000RPM I got a knock count of 24  but the car didn't hesitate, sputter, shut down, or blow up!
If the threshold is set too low, is the UTEC taking little bits of knock and making it appear to be a bigger issue than it is?
Should I just drive my car off a cliff and start over?
WTH is wrong with my car!!!
Uncle Scotty 02-21-2006, 06:04 PM ...get a good tune by someone who knows what's what....and stop with the poke-n-hope thing before ya blow it up
ride5000 02-22-2006, 08:10 AM scotty is right.
in the mean time, post some logs so we can help you fix the issue at hand: stopping the damned thing from knocking.

24...wow thats a huge count. If the treshold is low you will see artificial inflation of the knock count.
Freon 02-22-2006, 11:20 AM Ouch, I about crapped my pants when I got a 7 count.
If you see this 24 count, you must have some logs.... Post them. Read the sticky in this forum for instruction on how to post logs. Just post the pull, not the whole run, but if you want to email all your entire logs to me I'll take a look. freonr2 at gmail dot com
A 24 count should make your car hesitate big time, because the UTEC should pull timing on knocks. Usually something like 1-2 degrees per count, up to 5 to 8 degrees total, maintained for several seconds. You should feel a sudden loss of 5 degrees on a full throttle run, as your power will drop suddenly.
Threshold default for openloop fueling is 30% TPS. That should work fine, although a higher value is probably ok with a more mildly modified car to help with hesitation/transition issues.
Which base map? Stage 1 or Stage 2? Are all your parameters default? When you go back to a base stage map you should probably reload the default parameters. The tuner could've fudged them all up which would make the base maps run like crap as well.
You may also already have damaged the engine which may make getting rid of the knock impossible. How about you run around and log with Map 0 (stock mode) and see how the car runs. I'd stay in map 0 until you get this figured out.
needmoreboost 02-22-2006, 11:13 PM go up to junior @ ics performance... he can tune that for you

I got a 66 once. But I have the threshholds set way more sensative. I was tuning and on one pull it did that. I actually think I kicked up a rock in the road or something, or hit a spot of water in the gas, because it never dets in that area, and hasnt since then.
Plus I think a 66 count sized det would do some damage... But like i said, with my threshholds where they are, it may very well have been a 10 count normally so who knows.
ULTIMATE CC 02-24-2006, 07:00 PM I had a 48 count in the evo while road tuning once, but typically its no more than 3
moorebl 02-24-2006, 07:09 PM does ics tune the ecutek
