View Full Version : WRX STi...
cobra117 09-23-2001, 03:59 AM I'm drooling over WRX STi specs right about now, and beginning to wonder...
Will it be worth it to get a WRX and mod it if I know the better one is coming out in a year?
Can a normal WRX be taken STi via aftermarket? I know the AVCS is on the STi version, which I'm assuming you can't just throw on the WRX without replacing the engine.
Man, it hurts knowing I could probably afford an STi version if it was out now, but I need a car now, and the WRX is really the only new car I like.
Sigh.
SammyDFG 09-23-2001, 04:35 AM get the WRX
mod it....and spank cars
Godmal 09-23-2001, 04:36 AM Get the WRX for now and trade it in when the STI comes out. :)
That's what I'd like to do (in a perfect world.) Though, in a perfect world, the STI would already be out and sitting in my parking lot.
Siper2 09-23-2001, 06:00 AM Oh? What's that? You wanted STi pictures?

Evil, aren't I? ;)

meebs 09-23-2001, 03:53 PM why does the EJ20 bay look so cramped compared to the EJ25. Even an EJ25 with a turbo looks like there is more room under the hood.
Bradus 09-23-2001, 03:56 PM Wow! If the STI does reach these shores, I'm gonna trade in my WRX for one. Personally, I prefer the wing on my WRX to the boy-racer one the STI had in the photos, but otherwise, it looks mean.
The headlights look cool.

dunny 09-23-2001, 05:30 PM Is it just me, or do the specs for the European STi, the way they introduced it, and the fact all the models pictured are LHD, virtually scream that car is coming to North America very soon? Something about that car, I can't tell quite what, says it was designed with the North American market in mind (though maybe minus the seats, given our propensity for 32oz. drinks and supersized fries).
whtstr 09-23-2001, 05:59 PM wait...... then finally they decide not to introduce the STi........:o
just kidding
Matey2 09-23-2001, 06:15 PM which one is the real sti? the one with the wing or no wing? i like that wing and i wish i had money. darr!
Siper2 09-23-2001, 07:22 PM In the link I posted, they're both real. The ones on top are the regular (heh... yeah right... "regular!" :D ) STi.
The bottom couple of pics are of the Prodrive version (different bigger spoiler, foglight covers, etc.).

SubEd 09-23-2001, 07:27 PM this just in: the US will not be getting an STi. We can now cease all needless speculation.
Thank you. We will now rejoin your regularly scheduled program.
Siper2 09-23-2001, 07:47 PM Well if that's the case I'll just have to suffer and get one of these:

2002 Honda S2000. Obviously European (note license frame), but with the blue interior option supposedly coming to the US too, a new glass rear window, and hopefully those wheels  , I'm awfully tempted to say damn the torpedos, suck up the debt, and live it up!!!

SubEd 09-23-2001, 07:55 PM It will be a sacrifice for you, Siper, but I'm sure you're up to the challenge!
Siper2 09-23-2001, 07:59 PM *sigh* I wish I could. I mean, maybe I could. Depends on if I get a high-enough paying new job (getting laid off within a month--second time this year).
If not... then maybe in a couple years.... I just pray the S2000 stays in production....

foolio 09-23-2001, 08:44 PM i was wondering if anyone ever swaped a ej20 into a rs? if so how much was the swap ? i was thinking about this the other day because aftermarket systems for a ej25 is so expencive. i know that i get what i pay for but i was just wondering what would be a better final product?
thanks

SubEd- when the US does get our STi and I have one, I will do a search for this post and say I TOLD YOU SO (with a big smile, of course)... :D;)

All STi, All The Time
I agree with imprezawrxsti. It IS coming, it is only a matter of time, either that, or I will buy a Lancer Evo 7 when that comes over, and that is coming as well.
EJ20's been done in RS. There is a post in general with a link to a company that does it. A few members have done the swap.

Dude, you were born in 1982...why don't you just say 'my parents could probably afford an STi version if it was out now...";)
But seriously folks...all this 'it IS coming' and 'the Evo IS coming' garbage is annoying.
The only facts out are that we really don't know, and waiting around may not be the best option. There is rumor that they may not even make a 2003 WRX, but knowbody will really know until that time comes. Added to that, if the STi does come, it will most likely come in VERY limited numbers (I heard a rumor of only 1000), but again, everthing now is JUST A RUMOR! OK, you say, 'I'll just reserve one'. Well you better have a nice chunk of change b/c I have heard of WRX's being sold for $40K+! Think of what an even more limited STi would cost you.
Well, here's my thoughts as to what might happen.
Being that Mitsubishi is a bigger company and can 'afford' to take losses, the Evo would make it's way to shores first. They will come in somewhat limited numbers. Depending on the sales, they may bring it over the next year, and if they do, we could expect an STi from Subaru; but in even smaller numbers. If that happens, and sales are good, we would probably see these two cars for the rest of their production years. Or, if sales are bad, we will probably never see these cars again.
Just my opinion though. Peace.
Scoobie Doogie 09-23-2001, 11:52 PM I just spoke with some guys from Subaru and the STi is coming in 2003 as a 2004 model year car. 275HP is the power figure. 6 speed and variable adjustable center diff just like the Euro version. I have my name on the list to get one, Rally Blue Pearl of course. I hope to have more detail as it becomes available.

Would ya like a shoehorn to get that foot outta your mouth? =)
I'm goin with the WRX. If it aint fast enough in two years, I'll trade it in. If the STi comes here =)

Ummmmmmmm......"some guys"? Unless they're PR guys with a press release, I wouldn't put much stock in it. This knowledge probably isn't available below the highest levels, and they're not talking!
WRXRob 09-24-2001, 09:07 AM European emissions standards are getting pretty tough these days - on a par with ours. Therefore, I have little doubt that our STi will be similar to the new Euro STi just introduced with 265hp.
I can definitely live with that . . .
Waiting for the STi is definitely a cheaper route than buying a WRX today and upgrading the engine/suspension/brakes/interior to make a pseudo STi.
dunny 09-24-2001, 11:55 AM I believe I saw it posted here that the Euro STi clearrs the next generation emissions standards there. I'm no engineer, and I don't know the comparability between European and American standards, but I bet that car clears US standards easily.
