View Full Version : All-Seasons that work well in summer

Trying to figure out what to replace the crappy RE92s with. Especially since they're getting WAY too low on tread for the current driving conditions here.

Daily commute involves ~20 miles (each way) of two-lane twisties (nothing straight for more than 1/4 mile at a time). Hwy 9 for those in the Bay Area.

Tires need to be all-year tires:

Summer - 100*F, nice and moderately sticky for driving, not looking for as much grip as my KDW2s on my "other" car.

Winter - Rain, lotsa lotsa rain, with occaisional snow/ice (it snowed this weekend at my place, snow + twisties == fun!!) mainly for going to Tahoe for ski trips.

Which is the "best buy", do you think? I'm pretty torn between the BFGs and the Neros. I'd prefer something non-directional, to make rotating easier, but at least with the same size tires front/rear, a front/back swap can be done with directionals.

Oh, and I'd like to get some decent mileage out of the tires. Super-soft is fun, but it gets expensive after a while. Looks like around 20K yearly on the car, and I'd like to try to get 30K+ out of the tires. Might not happen, but we put 10K on the stockers after we picked it up with 35K on the clock, and wore off the remaining 30% of the tread. Although, the RE92s were poor enough in traction that we weren't getting full grip in a lot of turns....

Very happy with the P-Zeros here in NY, excellent in dry/wet/light snow. Don't know how they would hold up in deep snow as they aren't really made for that, you can't expect a high-performance tire, even an all-season M&S, to handle the worst winter conditions.
I previously had Dunlop SP-5000s and I find the Pirellis to be much better.
FYI my P-Zeros are 225/50/16 on 16x7 Slipstreams, and at 20K they still have plenty of tread and look nearly new.

I've had both the KDWS and the Pzero Nero M&S (what I have currently).

I would take the Pirellis hands down. The KDWS has a slightly stiffer sidewall which gives them marginally better turn in, but the Pirellis obliterate them in every other category. Wet grip, dry grip, snow grip, warm grip, and cold grip.

I wouldn't consider the Pilot Sport A/S unless you get a lot of snow and have money to burn.

Wow, talk about killer ratings at Tire Rack.... That's impressive, especially for $80/each.

Nokian WR on my WRX.....so far so good in Colorado winter and SoCal summer. A little soft on the sidewall but absolutely very good during winter and rater about 45k miles. I also have a 06 forester with OEM tires right now and you can tell the difference when driving the snow---very sloppy and I do not feel too confident driving in severe snow weather.

the whole story about the avon company is a good read.

Avon History (http://www.avontyresusa.com/history.html)

IIRC - these tires were designed 100% via customer feedback at the tirerack.

i have a set of these on my FXT - (215/55/ZR17's) - and after 15K of spirited daily driving through one new england winter and a hot texas summer - these tires still have the 'nubs' on the side of them.

this set is going on my wife's car now - and i ordered another set for a different set of wheels that will be going on my car tomorrow. you can't go wrong for the price.

i've owned pzero nero's too. (had a set of 225/45/17's on my wagon.) those tires are good too...but i can't say that they were any better than the avon's for an all season.

hope this info helps... :)

i had pirelli nero m&s tires on my '02 wrx (225/45r17) which i put on after my falken azenis's (also 225/45r17) went bald. they were awesome, no problems whatsoever. i'm going to be getting a set of the pirelli's again, for when my sti's stockies get worn.

Thanks for all the help. Got the PZero Neros on Monday. MUCH better than the RE92s. Although I also discovered that they had worn somewhat unevenly, and clear through to the cords on the inside of the tread. Starting new thread about that...
