View Full Version : Highbeam switch wiring under dash

I've got a set of aux driving lights that I want to have full control over. Right now my setup is a direct line from the battery through my in-cabin switch, to the activation line on my relay.

The problem I have is that in typical driving situations, I can't turn both my highbeams and my aux lights off quick enough for on-coming traffic. So obviously I need to get my aux's switched with my highs.

Now I know that the highbeams are ground-switched, and could find the ground wire at the lamps, but it would be a lot easier if there was some wire under the dash that was at +12V when the highs are on, and not at +12V (= not necessarily at ground) when they are off.

Is there any wire like that under the dash? If not, is there a wire under the dash that is at ground when the highs are on so that I could use a relay to invert the voltage? I'd like to keep the wiring for the switch under the dash so I don't have to run more lines through the firewall.

Thanks.

The only one I could think of was the high beam warning light, but unfortunately that is switched ground as well. That or the wire on the dipper switch is your best bet and just use that to trigger your relay. The wire that triggers the relay to send ground to the lamps is switched ground at the dipper switch, it is Green/Red. The switched ground for the lamps and the high beam indicator is Red.

Glad you asked, I needed to research this anyway since I am doing this same thing in a few days.

Goodluck!

with the switched ground, you need to have the wires that run to the relay swtiched, so your switch is on the ground side... but then you could use a DPDT switch so that one position is grounded and one position is off, the third being controlled by the highbeams... correct?

unfortunately, hella's harnesses come wired for positive so i'm just using mine on an independant switch that will only connect with a plus 12 feed from the illumination, meaning whenever my cluster is illuminated(so it comes on with taillights, lows and highs)

i'd love to have it triggered from the highbeam stalk, but i haven't found anything short of switching the wires to the resistor so the driving lights have the switch on the ground too.

whats wrong with it being grounded? If you apply a switched 12V(ignition) to one side of the relays coil and the other side of the coil is activated by your ground fromt he highbeams then it will work just fine.

A relay doesn't care what side is switched...

My highbeams in my old subaru were negatively switched.

now, what is interesting to note is that I recently put spotlights on the roof of my 99 OB and I had no problems find a 12V+ source for them...wonder why they changed it back and forth so many times.

My brain's fried from working too much this week but what about something from the fog light mod? There must be a hot wire to switch the fog lights off with the high beams.
