well i tried my friends over on clubwrx but apparently everyone over there forgot they own wrxs and live for freakin OT  My speedo intermittently stops working...it seems like a loose wire situation because on the highway if i change lanes quickly the speedo comes back and then when i finish changing lanes the speedo dies again. first off where is the actual speed sensor in the 02? I figure i should wire trace to see if the wire is intact and what not...i know ravensblade or whatever they changed their name to has the pinouts for the cluster so ill test the connections driving to see if i get a signal..but any other advice?? I searched and didnt see any similar problems with the 02...05s yea but not the 02...thanks in advance!

The speed sensor is in the transmission. When it stops working does the odometer stop working as well? If the odometer continues to increment it would indicate a problem with the speedo itself, if it stops when the speedo stops it would point to the sensor although there could still be something wrong in the cluster.
You can check the connector on the speed sensor for a bad connection, try unplugging it and plugging it back in and see if it helps.
The best way to diagnose a problem like this would be to get your hands on a scanner that can monitor real-time ECU data, and drive around while it's looking at the signal from the speed sensor. You would then be able to tell if the sensor itself stops working when the speedo quits.

if the speedo sensor stops working the ECU should go into limp mode and throw an MIL(your vehicle does have a manual transmission correct...sorry i don't know if the auto's even use a speed sensor).
Is your check engine light on? I am personally willing to bet the actual speedo head in the cluster is faulty

Bumping this.
This is exactly correct. My speedo/odometer stopped working yesterday, threw the CEL about 10 miles later and went to limp mode. Diagnosis is a faulty sensor...$246.38 for replacement. I'm also told that this particular part is NOT covered by the extended warranty. :(

Junkyards are your friend. You ought to be able to find a used speed sensor cheap. Or ask around on line as there are lots of broken transmissions - and it's not the speed sensor that is trashed by too much power. :alien:

www.car-part.com is your friend, trust me

Depends on the specific extended warranty.

Depends on the specific extended warranty.unless it was a powertrain only most of them should cover a speedo sensor. BUt then again it;s not like it's going to be hard to find a lightly used one

If he doesn't report a CEL, then I'd say its a cluster deal. Go to a buddy's shop or a shop you know real well and ask if they'll hook it up to a real time scanner just to be sure, such as Gene-sys 1 or whatever else is out there and portable, they should be able to see the speed through that. If they can, that just pins it.
