The Subaru engine makes it have a lot more torque, and also runs a lot smoother. It is going to be an extremely cool van.

It also has been lowered 3'' with aftermarket springs, and the below link shows the rims that come with it, that are currently off due to the season.

A. That wasn't that funny
B. Who laughs at their own jokes?

But anyhoo, when my dad had a Vanagon, I tried to get him to put a Subaru motor in it, but he resisted.

That's cool man. I love Vanagons. I'm doing a '04 STi swap into my '84 Vanagon. I'm still gathering and building parts right now. Maybe it will be in and running by late spring.

I was behind a EJ powered vanagon on I80 coming in to truckee going uphill, and COULDNT CATCH HIM!!! The fact that I am driving a Brighton, EJ18 with 160k on it is besides the point.....
He was moving though.

Very cool. It would be even cooler if it was a camper.

Dood, when I had my 1.8, I was in 3rd gear at 6000rpms most of the way up I-80 :( I even had to convince another member who was driving the 1.8 that he needed 3rd gear for a hill, but didnt believe me until he started loosing speed in 4th gear  :(

I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy I have the EJ25 now, 5th gear 3000rpms the whole way

very cool.

come share a tale or two. I've put together a forum at porscharu.com for any sort of subaru swap into rear/mid-engine vehicle. bugs, buses, vans, ghia, 911, 912...etc very little is there right now, as the server crashed before there was a backup. and the base site is non-existant. I'll get some pics up soon.

I wonder if that was my fiance's brother. He's running an Ej22 in his. He lives in Santa Cruz and is up to Tahoe all the time. His vanagon is very sweet and fully tricked out with all kinds of racks, light bars, etc...

Man I really wish we still had ours. The guy we sold it to doesnt want to sell it back to us though  It would be a totally different animal with a Subie motor in it (might have been reliable).

Yuppers. My powerband is 5mm wide from like 4500 to 4800 rpm. Every time I go to Truckee I have to think ahead so i dont scrub all my speed going up the hills at Floriston and by Boca there. I want that ej25 swap bad, but my degree must come first. Maybe then I can just get a FXT instead.....
Hooray for the teal ej18 club!! ;)

You know, your cheapest and simplest route is just a phase 1 ej22... It will get you over the hump in terms of going up and down hills, and you don't have to deal with any real changes with the swap in terms of wiring or the ECU...
