View Full Version : Update: muffler(Stromung) rust...
GregBolby 09-23-2001, 10:00 PM my stromung has a lot of rust on it, those that have seen my previous post on it saw that i bought the mild steel dual tip a few years ago, well i know the inside is rusted but today on closer look, i looked under one of the dual tips to find one of the welds decade away and exhaust coming out of the hole on the weld the whole is about a pinky sized hole....so i have concluded to
1. order a new exhaust
and 2. put a spark plug in the stromung and blow flames for a few days :)
well i am going with the apexi n1 universal with a mandrel bent custom catback
or an arospeed bomb universal with the same mandrel bent pipe.....any way
if anyone knows where to get a new arospeed bomb, for cheeper than 150 let me know if not i have a local shop who can get a universal apexi n1 for 225
well thanks again guys/gals

wolf8314 09-24-2001, 02:33 AM I was planning getting a stromung exhaus but from hearing this im not so sure ne more.....has ne one else had this problem??????????
Wolf:(
mitch808 09-24-2001, 02:35 AM Ebay has em for like $130 Do a search for apexi or n1 and you'll see. I'm tempted to buy one for my WRX as their sooo cheap for a muffler. Heck it can't hurt performance, maybe only sound like crap?
HoratioCaine 09-24-2001, 02:35 AM no more mild stainless for me!
You're scaring the kiddies away.
It's not mild stainless. It's one or the other. You've got the mild steel.
ATTN: anybody buying an exhause who ever goes near water: Buy the STAINLESS version.
GregBolby 09-24-2001, 10:35 AM whoops, meant mild steel.

remarcable 09-24-2001, 12:02 PM I think mild stainless is more or less correct, since a number of people's stainless steel stromungs have rust on them.
:(
STiShawn 09-24-2001, 12:31 PM Bummer, yet another reason to buy stainless.
Fubaru 09-24-2001, 01:00 PM I almost bought a full turboback made out aluminized steel from a local place for really cheap. The guy insisted that it would never rust even in Oregon weather. Aluminizing won't do much for corrosion either compared to high quality stainless?
Yeoman 09-24-2001, 03:02 PM Same here Greg, I have a large crack from under one tip to under the other tip. Less than 2 years old. Time to shop again!
HoratioCaine 09-24-2001, 03:04 PM The aluminized will last a lot longer than mild steel. But given severe abuse even stainless will eventually break down, will it not?
I think the stainless verson of the stromung isn't completely stainless. Not sure though.
ColinL 09-24-2001, 04:32 PM at least a year ago reports of stromung rusting were becoming prevalent... I have no idea why people continued to waste their money on them.
$85 gets you a Borla turbo muffler. $10-25 for a tip. bingo, you're done and it carries a million mile warranty.
you would think that bothering to import from Austria, stromung would be a premium product. nope, crap. folks with whatever they call stainless mufflers are having rust issues as well!
remarcable 09-24-2001, 05:17 PM But the stromung sounds soooo good.
The rust might be worth it.
Wedge 09-24-2001, 08:57 PM I don't know about anyone else, but I have a SS Stromung and my backyard is practically the beach here in So. Fla. and there is NO sign of rust. Yes it does get dirty, nothing a little polish can't fix and it's good as new! Oh well...

Penphoe 09-24-2001, 09:20 PM No rust problem for me. It's been on for nearly 15000km too!
LaterZ!
Darren!!
redobs 09-25-2001, 01:25 AM A lot of the New England guys with the Stromung's have been reporting rust on theirs, too. Mild or SS.
TaiChih 09-25-2001, 04:17 AM Have they tried polishing them? I thought I had rust too, but a good polish got rid of it. It's tough to get off. Oh, I have a SS rear section for sale is if anyone wants one. PM me with an offer. Used of course.:D
zx2boy 09-25-2001, 10:27 AM the welds on my stromung rusted threw so i just put the stock one on stromung sux:monkey:
Scooby14 09-25-2001, 01:45 PM Anyone thought about GTBGUY with his full exhaust systems? They come with a limited lifetime warranty!! That's got to be a good thing!!:D
Mine hasn't rusted yet. I have never heard a better sounding exhaust. The Honda guys around here can't believe how good it sounds. If it rusts in a couple of years oh well I'll buy something else. But if I get 3-4 years out of it I will be very happy. I think alot of the problem is salt damage. We don't get alot of snow here in TN so maybe it will last.
Dolphin Overton 09-25-2001, 08:00 PM Maybe you should have gotten a Stainless one
oh yeah, my car is 2000 miles away... damn!
GregBolby 09-25-2001, 10:09 PM looks like i just orderd an apex N1 system
bam
