View Full Version : wow this is nice, I have been driving without insurance!
Keith 09-24-2001, 01:47 AM I got home today from a kick ass week in Martha's Vineyard to find a letter from the DMV.Seems that when I canceled my insurance for my RS, they also canceled my insurance for my WRX..thats not cool.
So tomorrow i have to call them up and do the dealeing...ahh nothings easy. Just wanted to vent..... btw, the company is progressive. I hope I don't get in trouble for this as its not my fault.

I dont know what the law is in NY but the law here is if you dont have insuarnce its 150 bucks a day ..... just make sure some op doesnt come by and take your tags

Keith 09-24-2001, 02:41 AM if that happens, the keith will not be a happy person. I'm going to take care of it tomorrow.

Skirvdawg 09-24-2001, 07:35 AM Progressive is a pain in the butt. When I moved they never sent my statements to my new address and I found out my insurance was cancelled one day. Trying to work with them only resulted in a higher premium, so I switched companies.
Geek Guy 09-24-2001, 10:19 AM Whatever happens, make sure that they clean up anything that pertains to a "lapse of insurance". If they don't, it will REALLY screw you in the end - make sure the mark down that it was THEIR fault for canceling your insurance, etc.
I had a problem with MetLife where they sent me a preliminary bill (just showing my coverage) but never got an actual "send $x to us now" kinda paper... didn't think of it, since I was traveling a lot at the time. Well, turns out when I go to buy my WRX, I called up to get them to give me a quote on the specific VIN and they said that they had cancelling my insurance *two months prior*!!!!
Turns out that they had my address wrong! I live in apartment #403, and they tried to send it to apartment #40 (which there is not one in my building). I asked them how much to reinstate- $800 for 3 months!! That's twice what I pay now! So after much rhetoric, I got the lapse taken off my record since it was their fault, and now I'm back to my regular rate.
But they have since cancelled the benefit for renter's insurance, so I'm probably going to shop around for insurance next time.

So this is probably a bad time to let you know that you bumped into my car this weekend on the Vineyard (I have witnesses), my neck is really sore, and I need a new turbo and exhaust due to the collision damage.
Don't quit your night job, start sending the $$$$, beoch.

Mikey B 09-24-2001, 04:18 PM At least you had a title for the car...
My father just tried to register his new that he got and its only 2 years old, but when the orginal owner bought it through a dealer there was never a title for it... SO the orginal owner had to title it, 2 years and 30,000 miles later so my dad could register it...

Keith 09-24-2001, 04:34 PM ok, now i HATE progressive. Since I haven't had insurance forf a month, I'm going to have to resign like I'm just getting new insurnace. I have friggen 2 speeding tickets so they are going to RAPE me because of this. progressive has just hit the level of binladdin, and compaq, I want to blow them all up.

Molez93 09-24-2001, 06:50 PM Hey Keith,
As a New Yorker who has had friends in similar situations, I think you are totally screwed. Not only do you need to get "new" insurance, I'm pretty sure the DMV will force you to turn in your plates for the WRX or risk having your license suspended. Why? You can't have a vehicle registered w/o insurance- no ifs, ands, or buts. Penalty? Suspension of that vehicles registration and possible fine regardless of who is to blame.
I'm never been able to reaon with the NYDMV, but I wish you the best of luck proving me wrong.

jhonas 09-24-2001, 08:01 PM hmmmm... Sounds like your knee deep in *****. If you're going to keep trying to "resign" with progressive, and they keep trying to charge you something other than your old rate, start beotching and moaning at them till they give in. And try to reason with them, since you hadn't been insured for the last month and hadn't paid, tell them you'd be more than happy to pay for that month (as you would have anyways). But if they're going to screw you, then I'd shop around some...
Maybe contact the Better Business Burue. Maybe call up the police to see what you can do about the situation (of course, then they'd know you're uninsured if you tell them who you are).
Just some ideas.

NotoriousWRX 09-24-2001, 08:42 PM Just so you know, once you go 30 days or more without insurance, NY State laws basically allow the insurance company to legally rape you. You will not find an insurance company that will rate your policy any differently, as your prior insurance history determines how they rate you, and a cancellation of 30 days or more, specially for non-payment of premium is a big no-no. Either way, you should make some calls and shop around before going back to Progressive. I suggest you try GEICO, Tri-State Consumers, Statefarm, Allstate and AIG.
If you have any other specific insurance questions, just ask.
Oh, and btw, the NYDMV is the pickiest and biggest pain in the arse DMV in the entire country.
Youngun 09-24-2001, 08:44 PM what the hell? how did you lose your insurance? they must have found out that you're a filthy mexican :-)
Do you have letters from Progressive?
Every time I've made any change in my policy with them, they sent out a notice (statement) telling me what they did within a week or two.
So I can't imagine they didn't send you anything when you canceled the insurance for the RS. They may have even sent you a check for the remaining part of the policy.
If they didn't send a statement, call them and ask them to retroactively activate your insurance, since you didn't ask them to cancel it and they didn't tell you they did. I'm not sure who to talk to if they give you problems. Most likely the insurance commissioner, not the police.
WonderDude 09-24-2001, 09:36 PM don't give up on progressive "putting it back to the way it was." if the CSR ya talk to doesn't fix it (it's likely they don't even have the authority to do so), ask to speak to the supervisor.
as long as you haven't made any mistake with your coverage, you're assertive and POLITE, and you've been a good customer for a while, you'll be likely to get your way. remember, there is always another supervisor up the chain. be sure to write down the names of everyone you talk to, right when they introduce themselves, btw. also remember that they usually record all phone conversations, so don't lie or say any stupid stuff.
if they waffle on an immediate decision, be sure to emphasize the fact that you can't drive without insurance, and that you currently have no coverage due to no fault of your own (i.e., due to their screw-up).
Keith 09-24-2001, 10:43 PM Thanks for the tips guys, I'll let yuou know how it goes tomorrow. I'm gonna bitch and moan as much as possible..hopfully they can give me something simlar to what I had. I got one quote already... $5,700!!!!!!!!!! I was paying 3k before!
I hate progressive!

redobs 09-25-2001, 01:20 AM Damn, you NY guys get raped!!! I thought $1500 in Boston was bad! Keith, it's time to move. Just use Fishguy's address.;)
Keith 09-25-2001, 01:22 AM yeah man I'd love to. In NH, I'd probably be paying like 10 bux or something, hicks:)
ehehhe
I hope this works out, it would really suck to pay $2k because progressive didn't friggen explain what they were doing.
keith
redobs 09-25-2001, 01:32 AM Actually, in NH, I believe they don't even make you have it. It's voluntary!!!
Keith 09-25-2001, 01:47 AM I wouldn't feel right not having it though, I'm all scared to drive my car now. Glad I didn't know I didn't have insurance yesterday, I drove home in 3.5 hours from jgards house:) I was doin like 80-85 most of the way home:)
