View Full Version : UTEC Knock Control
TurboRex 03-01-2006, 12:04 PM When will UTEC be upgrading the software so that you can determine how many knock counts are needed for the cel light to flash. I have forged pistons which make the cel flash false on 1 counts. I can lower knock sensitivity but I want more flexibility on tuning for knock.
I was told it would be upgraded by now for this issue.

x99percent 03-01-2006, 12:39 PM So... you want lower knock sensitivity, without lowering the UTEC's knock sensitivity?
Why would making the UTEC less sensitive *not* be a desirable option?

I don't know about the STi firmware, but the WRX UTEC has the capability in rev 5.0.
TurboRex 03-01-2006, 02:38 PM When I first installed the UTEC, I had 1 counts everywhere with the stock knock sensitivity but never anything higher. I then lowered the sensitivity by 20 to get out the knock counts due to my forged pistons. I would prefer to keep knock sensitivity closer to stock levels and only pull timing on knock counts over 1 or even over 2 (which is what I told for the best tune). With the sti, you can't do this yet. I am wondering when it will be available. I was told last year it would around the first of this year.

x99percent 03-01-2006, 05:01 PM With the sti, you can't do this yet.Yes you can. It's been there from day 1 on the STi.
"Knock Count Threshold" under "Tuner Constants". Default is "1", you want 2 or 3.
TurboRex 03-01-2006, 06:33 PM I meant you can change the knock count to a higher number to pull timing, etc. but the cel will still go on as long as their is a knock count of 1. I want to be able to adjust when the cel comes on.
x99percent 03-01-2006, 11:52 PM I want to be able to adjust when the cel comes on.That would require making your UTEC less sensitive to knock.
Why is that not a desireable option? Properly lowering the sensitivity would have the same effect as making your current "2" knock counts a "1".
tmarcel 03-02-2006, 09:41 AM Properly lowering the sensitivity
Yep. That's correct! No problem with lowering the sensitivity but you got to know if it's real knock or not. Who's to say that the UTEC is right? It's only telling you what it thinks. If you've got the default knock sensitivity then that's a best case scenario and works for most cars. However, 99.5% will never tune their knock sensors. I am actually about to do just that myself.

Yep! What the hell is a knock lite going to do  It'll work bt STILL needs to be tuned.

... best thing i ever did, imo.
tmarcel 03-03-2006, 09:03 AM ... best thing i ever did, imo.
Which device did you use on yours?
ride5000 03-03-2006, 09:34 AM i used the tuner pro's built in knock sensor amp and included 2ndary knock sensor with a pair of headphones.
essentially i went +15 knock sens. across the board on all the rpm ranges in the utec, then made sure that when it went off there really wasn't knock occuring. if not, then i'd bring the sens. back a bit. when all was said and done they all hovered around +10 or so.
(edit: when i say +10, that is on top of the default values.)
tmarcel 03-03-2006, 09:41 AM Ken, so you made them more sensitive? By adding 10 to 85, for example would be more sensitive. I would've thought that the default settings would already be overly sensitive.
ride5000 03-03-2006, 10:02 AM maybe for folks with big old forged slugs in their engines... ;) you might need to go less sensitive.
on the contrary i have found that the utec's default settings are on par with the oem ecu's sensitivity.
generally, when i DO get knock, the utec pulls timing and the oem ecu does not! :)
i should point out that i've set the threshold for the utec DOING something about the knock to a count of 2. the cel will flash at 1.
tmarcel 03-03-2006, 10:23 AM Okay I gotcha!
TurboRex 03-03-2006, 10:26 AM ride, I am considering what you are doing as well. Pull timing at 2 counts and flash at 1. I just want to have the ABILITY to change the flash to 2 counts if I want. This option is already available with the wrx. I am anxious for the same flexibility. That is all I want.
So I guess no one knows if this mod will be forthcoming?
Greg
ride5000 03-03-2006, 10:29 AM i know exactly what you mean greg. i found that noise sometimes popped up at a 1 count, and when knock actually occured it was well above a 2 count... like 5 and up. i wish i could give you an answer.

 I dont know what revision you are running, but on my 05 STI with a UTEC, I have the sensativity adjusted AND I have it set to only care about 2 counts or higher.
This has been the case the entire time I owned it.
I have it adjusted WAY more sensative than the way it comes, and I have it set up to ignore 1 counts.
I also have it set up to pull 4 degrees at a time, and pull up to 16 degrees total. I am running alch injection, and in case of any problems, I want that timing YANKED back hard. It works very well too.
shikataganai 03-03-2006, 08:25 PM ']Good idea - something way dumber than the UTEC.
the point is that he wants to divorce the utec's view of knock, and its response of pulling timing, from what he is presented through the CEL-flash. having the knocklite would allow him to do just that: leave his UTEC desensitized, but see the purdy amber light flash at a different threshold.
