View Full Version : New Best w/TurboXS, SZ49 and EJ207: 11.2 @ 127.7

dug-e-fresh
03-03-2006, 10:14 PM
Just got back from the track tonight... I got a new personal best with my 18 month old set-up and 12 month old untouched TXS C16 tune. Previously it had been 11.35-11.39 @ 123-125.33 mph.

Tonight I managed 11.2 @ 127.7 with a 1.78 sixty foot. My best sixty for the night was 1.690, but I couldn't get it all together for one run. I am SURE I could get 11.0-11.1 @ 128 mph out of it. A few more weight reductions... GTSpec subframe, STi control arms, driveshaft shop shaft... and it may do the trick :D

I had to short shift 2nd and 3rd... for some reason it was breaking up above 7600 rpms... so I was shifting around ~7500. Can't really complain though... can I? ;) I just put new plugs in, so I may need to re-gap them.

Only major difference from the previous best runs is I went wingless... and no passenger seat.

The Andrewtech PPG dogbox was working flawlessly.... coupled to mikaust's used single plate RPS/ACT clutch combo.

Summary (based off a camera phone pic I took thats abit blurry, if there are corrections that need to be made, I will make them... rest assured, the 1/4 info is 100% accurate down to the thousandths):

60- 1.783
330- 4.87? edit to 4.877
1/8- 7.379
mph- 97.60 edit to 97.68
1000- 9.584 or 9.524 edit to 9.514
1/4- 11.290
mph- 127.73 (30 mph on the back half!)

Basic Setup:
'02 WRX
EJ207 (100% factory stock)
Off the shelf SZ49 w/8cm exhaust side
Full exhaust
38mm tial
TXS UTEC
MRT FMIC
Stock MAF
Modded WRX injectors
Single Walbro 255

Stock cams, stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifold.

Weight reductions:
Pass seat, rear bench, no spare, Braille Batt., and a few other odds and ends... oh and I am wingless now. With me in it, the car weighs about 3200lbs (I weigh 250lbs). I have a CF hood now, too... but its actually heavier than stock. 1/4 tank of pure C16.

Thats about it... oh yea... I dyno'ed 452 (last year) on that oh so high reading Turbo XS dyno... 128 traps.... 450 wheel... yea, thats way off, lol!

To me, that's the amazing part of all of this: that you're running that quick and fast on such a small turbo. I mean, that is a TOTALLY streetable setup you have.

What turbo is next? Surely a GT3052 or SZ55 will get you that 10.x you desire.

Doug ran 5-6 times. he ran consistent low 11's. He did not flat shift on all of the runs. The 11.2 run was a damn near perfect. The car sqatted and then it was gone. His driving is second to none, but then again it has to be because he only got 452whp from the uber high reading Turboxs dyno. ;)

Stock motor, Deadbolt shelf turbo, Andrewtech PPG gears,Turboxs tune and a 250 lb driver (he does not look it).

One thing that Doug did not mention was his boost to start the evening was set around 28 pounds and on the later runs 29.5 to 30, he did not turn it up to his race gas dyno setting of 32 because of the problem above 7700 rpms.

You have to love the stock ej207.

Not always bigger is better..there are many problems that come from running larger turbos....cost...breaking more parts...building boost off the line...holding boost between gears..and a narrow power curve are just a few.

NOS maybe needed to properly run a bigger turbo with a 2.0l IMHO.

Def has a real nice setup currently.

get rid of the stock ex. manifold. that thing weighs like a brick.

Thought about it... would like to find something lighter and something to give me more topend WITHOUT sacrificing the spool. I guess if I coat and wrap a set of equal length headers, that might fit the bill.

Saturday the 18th... I'll have to make that a date. Not sure how many passes the officials will let me make though. They gave me 1 more after the 11.2 last friday...

wow. are u powershifting

Nope... flatshifting (using the clutch, but not letting off the gas which is software assisted with the UTEC). I still have to work on my 2-3 upshift. This gear change is CRITICAL to the 1/8th mile and thus the 1/4, I have yet to give it my all.

amazing times Doug

Congrats

I have been getting a few people tryyin to get me to go wingless as well...this makes me think they are right.

Again, awesome job

I have ran wingless before and can't really comment as to how effective removing it is for increasing trap speed... all I have for ya is 125 traps in June w/wing and 127+ traps in March w/o wing... the car does seem abit more "darty" on the highway... but then again, it has been windy around here lately.

great job man,and i dont have that sbframe in mi wagon his weight is 32 lbs you have job to do take down that frame and go for the 11.00 @130

Yea, #1 on my list is the GTSpec subframe... that thing is a work of art! Stronger, lighter, gorgeous... and priced reasonably well. How can it be wrong? :)

Hmmm... this is my dilemna. I am not really sure I WANT to go with a bigger turbo. The SZ49 has been awesome and exceeded my expectations darn near everytime I take her out. The balance of power, spool and just overall flexibility with this turbo IMO is unmatched by anything I have seen on a EJ20... so, with that said, I've considered an FPRed, SZ55, SZ60 or enven and SZ65... I am just not convinced yet that it will actually make me faster.

wow! saweet times! that's crazy, stock block and sz49 running 11.2's

:D Indeed... I am stoked!

I am dissapointed.....still no 100mph 1/8. Keep trying

I hear ya Steve... lol, I hear ya. It's that 2-3 shift... I am just not shifting it confidently. I have some bushings and a plan to have the interlockers "adjusted" and we will see what that does for my confidence ;)

crazy times you have there Doug. Quite the impressive driving. Good luck! I'm sure we'll see 10's in the next week or so

Not so sure about a week or so... or 10s for that matter... but, I do feel the set-up has more in it. We will see...

There are about a billion proven power braggers that could use a good lesson from you!

Nice effing run!!!

The only lesson I see... don't get a turbo TOO big for your goals. Big turbo's are HARD to drive. Every gear change becomes so much more critical keeping those big suckers on full boil... the margin for error is reduced by the square root I tell you!

You have to love the stock ej207.

YEs, Michael... gotta love the STOCK EJ207. Anyone short of a 10 sec drag car (assuming I don't get a 10 sec pass, hehehe) doesn't need anything more than a stock EJ207, a fell matched turbo (SZ49/Green), good tuning and a well built/geared drivetrain. I know the EJ207 in general is a 10 second motor... whether I get it there remains to be seen. Point is... why spend $4k+ on a sleeved shortblock if your not gonna be shooting for 9s!?

Why not just trim the oem subframe? I assume you only have it on to support the FMIC.

Nice run! I am getting excited for NED.

The subframe I am speaking of is the U-brace that ties in a lot of stuff under the car. Steering/engine cradle, control arms, unibody, etc, etc. You can't simply trim it. But, the GTSpec piece I am talking about will replace it. I am sooo looking forward to getting this piece!

Never ran an FPRed on mys set-up... considered it. Mikaust has it on his car... which is virtually the same set-up as mine otherwise. We were able to eek out 125 traps from his 110% full weight car (ie- subs, amps, STi wing, front lip, etc, etc.).

Getting the car really dialed in... I think his car has 127+ traps... and with some weight reductions, possible 130-131.

I agree though... anything bigger becomes a real problem getting the most out of it. I'd say a 35 shot is a must.... and if I am gonna have to do that to maximize the turbo... I might as well stay where I am and just add a 50 shot... ya know?

Congrats my man! Your car has even more left in it I'm sure.

-Rob

Thanks Rob, lets get that VP buy-in rolling!!

Doug... impressive as always. Take that 49 lb. turbo to the max!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats my intention. I wanna rework the intake tract abit... really, I need to clean the damn filter. Last time I saw a filter this dirty, it was pulled off and replaced and the car made 25-30 whp more!!

Nice times, But I like your trap speed better.

Thanks Hill... glad to help you learn the car. I wishI had some video... the were some concerned parties at the track over all the sparks shooting out from under my car, lol... that clutch/flwyheel was taking a beating!!

Keep it simple... and optimize. Thats the way you get'er done. :) 10s, well let me get an 11.0 or even an 11.1 before we jump ahead ;)

In a perfect world... she's got it in her. But as mikaust stated, it was almost a perfect run. I have some left on the launch... I have a little left on the 2/3 shift... gotta clean up the revs 7600+ (I am pretty sure its the plugs).... and then get those last batch of weight reductions... all together on paper that SHOULD get me there... but I've ALMOST been "there" on the stock turbo (13.0s, but no 12s), on the VF36 (12.0s, but no 11s) and now if the trend continues.... hehehehe... 11.0s, no 10s. It very well could be that the problem I was having over 7600 was a MAF overflow issue... eh, who knows. I am pretty sure I am on the limit of what the MAF sensor can read.

I'm sure you'd like to break into the 10's with the 49, but I vote for you to go ahead and get the 55  Instead of running high 10's you can cruise into the 10's (theoretically). although, sometimes going with a bigger turbo doesnt necessarily make you faster, just gives you more potential to go faster.

Yes it did pull me at first. At the time I had a passenger in my car, the full interior while running the (100) pump gas tune while you were on the C-16 race gas tune. Funny when the passenger got in your car I seem to remember seeing your headlights in my rear view long enough to pull into your lane. :D

thats what happens when you start with the headlights in the mirror AND get the kick AND gave me the passenger. That was a 400 lb swing. -200 from you, +200 lbs for me.

Lets go again... no passengers. Both C16. Both 32 psi. I'll pick you up a drum today from VP ;) We can do it tonight.

Oh I forgot, I short shifted and had to hold the gold fish bowl so they would not pop out. :) Can I take out the sub, amps, interior, tools wing etc. this time? Ain't my car no more.... maybe you should try my next one. As for the 200 lb swing he was in my car too and yes I kicked it first but you were fading ....fast.

Right... he was in your car and I rolled out. Then we put him in my car and we were dead even. That makes a 400lb swing when you take the 200 out of one and put it in another. If we left him on the side of the road... it would have been a 200 swing.

Sounds like I am talking about Jason as if he were disposable baggage... lol!

Anywat, you can take out whatever you think you need to take out ;)

You had sub, amps, interior, tools and wing... true.

BUT, you have lighter wheels (11.5 vs 16.5 per wheel = 20lbs= sub and tools), aluminum control arms vs my steel ones (~2-3 lbs each maybe= 6lbs= amps) lightweight headers vs my iron pieces (~2-3 lbs= stuff), JDM alumin. front bumper support vs my modded steel USDM support and a race radiator (~5lbs= more stuff)... hmmm maybe not worth too much, but surely enough to offset some.... and you weigh less than me, unless I amputate my 3rd leg.... which ain't happening... hehehe

I bet race weight there's maybe 100-150 lbs between the cars. With us in the,... well, lets just go weigh them as is tonight!

And as for fading fast... both Jason and I disagree. Jason was surprised you got over being so close ;) And you know Jason... it's his car now, I am sure he'd much rather it had pulled me badly.

def

ps- of course I'll try the next one. the question is, whose gonna be trying more?

Didn't we weigh your RS wheel versus mine and found out there was only a pound difference? There was more then enough room face it Doug you were fading seriously.... seriously enough that you did not have to let up because I was pulling you. Was I running the same boost level? No. Was I on the race gas tune? No. Do I have an up pipe leak? Yes.

I raced you to see if I could hang with you.... I did that. If you want to race try Jason. its his car.

They were very similar when your rims had 225/50s and mine had 205/55s, but now that you are wearing 205/55s again... that would mean they weigh even less.

Mirrors can be deceiving. Jason 100% agrees with what I saw when he was in my car.

You were running 27-27.5 lbs to my ~29 lbs. Red vs SZ49. You were on your 100 octane tune, which dyno's the same on TXS's dyno as my C16 tune. So we were both at 450whp.

Then you rode with me, Jason drove your/his car... I gave him the kick, door to door, then he pulled, the SZ outspooled the Red and I pulled back door ro door... and thats how it ended.... 100% dead even. You were in my car to see that.

Jason was in my car to see when you were driving. Same outcome. You kicked it, except this time you were at least a car ahead of me, which gave you about a 2 car lead... then we just paced out.

Dammit... just get one more day with that thing... we will go to Cecil and run!! Like the good old days.

PS- whatever happened to the days where you'd give me the kick... hehehehe

Hey, def. I woke up this morning and was thinking about this thread :no life: and was wondering if your times could be improved with a rear diffuser like from the 06 STI? Decreased drag and turbulence, but increased weight? Just a thought, what do you think?

Hopefully soon... seemed I overlooked a 1/2" gash in a vacuum line off the brake booster... Thanks Jermaine/Andrew. That has been corrected.

And now with a few electronic upgrades I just acquired... I should feel abit more confident to run soon...

Since you have PPG gears....I'm betting the next thing to go would be:

1. Rear axle
2. Your R160

So far so good. I am running the original axles on the car... so they are going on 5 years of abuse here in a week or so ;)

The rear went once, but that was more or less from severe abuse. I did snow donuts whenever I could... would kick the rear out whenever I could and at the track I got massive wheel hop... the diff still got me home (clicking)... to Turbo XS, dyno'ed 320 and then ALMOST made it home... lol!

The rear thats in there now seems fine.

I do have a spare rear, center and 2 sets of rear axles. I need to source a set of front axles and I will be all good... that or buy the driveshaftshop ones. We'll see. I hope Unabomber is right... cause I am prepared for those things. :)
