I was doing a search about the rotten egg smell, but mine's a little different.

I do get some stink when i launch hard, but that's normal, here's my situation:

When i first turn on the air conditioner (no matter how long ive been driving), i get this rotten egg/smelly sock smell.

it goes away after like 5-10 min, but man.. it stinks.. what could it be related to, and also what can I do to fix it.

2000 RS w/ 26k miles.

I know that smell you're talkin' about. That's normal. I think there's some buildup of condensation or something. I'm sure someone else can explain it better than I can. I think there's a filter for the A/C that you can get from Subaru but don't know if it'll help. What I do to try and prevent it from happening is to turn off the A/C and the fan, turn up the heat, blast it for about 15-30 seconds and turn it off. The smell seems to go away faster when I do that.

The smell is the condensation of water on your evaporator. Since it is wet and dark where the evaporator sits it starts to grow and stink. The filter will not fix the problem the filter is used to filter out dust from the outside air going into the cabin. You can try those AC smell remover spray that you can find at any auto parts store.

To prevent this from happening you should turn your heater to full and fan to full blast for a few min before shutting of the car after you have turned on ac. This will evaporate the water to prevent the smell from happening.. seem to work for me so far.

actually if not fixed by the dealer it could lead to expensive repairs down the road - so it is a big problem!

Take it to the dealer (thats what your warranty is for) and ask them to check your AC out - if you just keep spraying the aerosol in eventually the mold will sread throughout your entire system (over a few years) including condensor etc and then it'll cost you $$ to fix it.

bottom line: Its a new car it shouldn't do that - let the dealer fix it (plus if you have a history of taking it to the dealer once your warranty is over you will have a case for making SOA pay for any repairs for the same problem since you have a service history for the same problem.

true, but this is completely independent of the turbo. Unless you wanted to fix something in the engine later, and remove the turbo to fool the warranty, it shouldn't matter.

You've got bacteria living on your condenser where it's warm and moist.

:alien: <-- I think that's what this guys is....

no, thats the alien that pooped the bacteria out.....he's not the source of the smell, but he is the reason it's there
