Ok, many questions posted in Transmission forum, but I think this forum is the place for this info. Note that I've scanned the labels off the bottles - you can read the info yourself. Also, this applies to a manual tranny, and my comments apply to use in a MY00 2.5 RS. Here's a summary:

1) Superlight Shockproof

Rated weight: 70W-90

Color: Opaque yellow

Comments: Good in tranny and rear diff. Shifting is very smooth - very synchro friendly. Highly recommended.

2) LightWeight Shockproof

Rated weight: 70W-140

Color: Clear blue

Comments: I haven't personally used this. They orig shipped me LightWeight when I ordered SuperLight and hence is why I have it. As it's rated 70W-140 and our application calls for a 75W-90, it's heavier than our tranny/diffs require. Might be useful in a turbo RS, though, since the tranny probably experiences the "shock loading" they describe on the bottle.

3) MT-90

Rated weight: 75W-90

Color: Clear red

Comments:
Not as synchro friendly. Shifting was not as smooth as standard tranny oil. It's also a GL-4 oil, whereas our application calls for a GL-5 oil. Not recommended.

Capacities (GC8, MY00 2.5 RS): 3.7 qt. in the front tranny/diff, 0.7 qt. in the rear diff. You should buy at least 5 quarts to replace tranny/rear diff, and 6 if you're real sloppy. ;)

I purchased these products from OGRacing at http://www.ogracing.com for $7.75/quart. They were very easy to deal with and when I told them they shipped the wrong product, they immediately shipped the correct one out.

ADAMRS - Yes, I definately recommend changing it out. I, too, first got the MT-90 based on the info posted on the Cobb's website. :confused: I plan to call Trey to talk to him about what they've posted up. It's a little confusing, IMO, and since the MT-90 is not a GL-5 oil as spec'd in our manuals, I would only have to suggest to stay away from it.

That said, I did talk the Trey about use of the Superlight Shockproof in the tranny and he said most people he knew that used it also preferred it to the MT-90. Their website really isn't clear on this.

Read the label on the bottle (above), too, and it's says it's not for GL-5 applications.

I honestly don't think it'll do any harm short-term, but as per my observations above, it's definately not optimal day-to-day.

I highly recommend a switch to SuperLight Shockproof.

I'll let you know what I find out.

For that stock feel with the protection, get 3qt. of MT-90 and 1 qt. of Superlight shockproof. I got mine from www.autoil.com $30 shipped for 4 quarts. can't beat that!:D

Ok, talked to Trey.

He emphasized that each application and driver results in different opinions as to which feels/is the best.

He realizes that MT-90 is a GL-4 oil his opinion was that this isn't a big issue.

He said, all else being equal (price, etc.) for the Impreza, he'd go with Shockproof.

This past weekend I replaced my stock manual tranny oil with Redline Superlight Shockproof gear oil. See above for specs and pics of the bottle. I purchased it from ogracing.com, and it was in my hands 2 days later. I recommend purchasing from them. Good, quick service, done right the first time. :)

First, changing the fluid was absolutely a piece of cake. I think the drain plug is 21mm and it came off without a struggle. I bought a long funnel to facilitate easy refilling.

First impressions: :rolleyes: I was unimpressed. I drove the 20 mile round trip to the carwash and it didn't really seem to do much. The next day I took a 250 mile round trip to Portland, Maine. Apparently my transmission needs a few hundred miles to get used to the new goo, but now it's veeeery nice! Upshifting is buttery smooth, 4-3 and 3-2 downshifts downshifts are much better (usually double-clutch/revmatch 3-2, though, and that hasn't changed), and 2-1 downshifts, well I double-clutch/revmatch all of those, so I can't comment.

I'm not sure what the long-term reliability issues are. AFAIK, there are no friction modifiers in the product, and it's certainly slippery to the touch. We'll see.

I put in the Lightweight Shockproof back in May...and I have had Zero problems...Th car was turbo'd with a minnam stage 2...and has a ACT clutch....I have almost 15000 miles on this stuff...and as fragile as our tranny is in a turbo car, I wanted longevtity and reliability.....My shifting has improved to the point that my tranny is VERY SMOOTH...I ave Kartboy Shifter/bushings also...which only adds to thrill.....I would highly reccomend this product at all costs...but I would suggest mixing the two componants...(superlight and lightweight together) 50/50...as that is the best combo...
