View Full Version : Honda V-10 Engines for Sports Cars
Jon [in CT] 03-12-2006, 09:14 PM A brief blurb from http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000006&sid=aMXplqBFmy4U&refer=home: ...
Honda said on March 11 that it is considering building its first Japanese factory since 1976 to make power trains or assemble cars in Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo.
Earlier on March 10, Nikkei English News reported the 30 billion yen ($252 million) plant will produce Honda's fuel-efficient VTEC engines and V-10 motors for sports cars as soon as 2008. The Tokyo-based company's new facility will make about 200,000 engines a year, the news service said.
...Anyone know which Hondas get a V-10 in 2008?
OneArmedBoxer 03-12-2006, 09:22 PM New NSX?
Yep, the new NSX is suppsed to get a V10.
Wouldn't honda be the only company in the world that has V6 and V10, but no V8? :)
max_stirling 03-13-2006, 12:57 PM One really interesting thing I remember when watching the F1 qualifying (still have the race on Tivo and haven't watched it yet) and they said that with the old V10, there would be a small rpm range, I think they said around 16K rpm, that would cause the engine shake and become embalanced, but would exist outside of this rpm range. With the V8 engines, the embalance would start much earlier and just increase all the way to redline.
Maybe there's something that Honda engine builders know and can't compromise on. V10 are just smoother and produce more power. Maybe this is also the reason for all the inline 5 in the market: VW, Volvo, GM?
Hmmm...
amukaoen 03-13-2006, 12:59 PM They might as well make a V9 or V11... err.. I-9 or I-11... itd make for some funky looking cars.

honda will have a v8 soon...will be in the RL and ridgeline.

Well, I think in theory an I5 is a bit smoother than an I4, so I guess a V10 can be more balanced than a V8.
Optimus Prime 03-13-2006, 07:21 PM I can't wait to see the new V10 NSX!
Honda's HRC race engineering makes V5 engines for MotoGP bikes, not imbalanced :D
Hazdaz 03-13-2006, 07:30 PM I would think that if Honda goes to the trouble of making a V-10... changes are that they would also put it into a high-end Acura sedan (like the RL, or something even bigger).. also why make a V-10 if ya can't put it into their only real truck... V-10 Ridgeline when it gets redesigned maybe too.
Phil Jr. 03-14-2006, 12:41 AM Why would honda put a torqueless v-10 with an 8k+ redline into a pickup??
Diabolical1 CC 03-14-2006, 01:01 AM Given the track record of Honda V10's in Formula 1, you really don't want one.
Phil Jr. 03-14-2006, 02:07 AM dont you think its a bit unfair the judge an engine that has not even been released yet based on the performance of an F1 car? That like saying you wont buy bridgestone tires because they had a blowout on an F1 car.
johnei 03-21-2006, 04:44 PM More news on the NSX
The 2009 Honda/Acura NSX will target the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo, according to Britain’s AutoExpress magazine. Currently, the automaker is said to be testing two “stunning” prototypes — one with a front-engine layout, and one with a mid-engine, like the previous model. The car will have a 500 horsepower V10 and all-wheel-drive — as indicated by previous reports — and will also set the stage for a new design direction at Acura, according to AE. Recently, Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said the new NSX would be something of a grand tourer and target Aston Martin. Given the use of a high-revving V10 engine, we tend to agree with the AutoExpress analysis. (Pictured right is a Honda supercar concept that might give some hints to the design of the new NSX).
Freon 03-21-2006, 04:54 PM Why would honda put a torqueless v-10 with an 8k+ redline into a pickup??You don't. You slap a different head package on it that makes more torque.
Look at Nissan's 3.5L. 240-300hp depending on the application and model year.
