View Full Version : highway 5a
skier 03-13-2006, 02:45 AM just some random pics taken on the highway 5a on the way from Kamloops to Meritt. I would highly suggest to take that highway at least once instead of 5, which is faster and shorter, but a bit less scenic.
most of the pics are taken from the car through the extremely dirty windshield, so please excuse the quality.

bezerk 03-13-2006, 03:07 AM Screw #5...5A is an awesome drive!
chopchop 03-13-2006, 03:08 AM Great pictures!
I only stay in the lower mainland so I've never seen such road
Reminds me of the epsiode of Top Gear when they tested M5
lostmind 03-13-2006, 03:49 AM I wish I could convince my wife there was stuff up in BC worth visiting. But she doesn't like winter sports and soo... no lovely long stretches of highway for me...
amarpauld 03-13-2006, 03:52 AM how is the highway in general though? (potholes/gravel/wildlife)
Picard 03-13-2006, 12:24 PM Nice pictures! I recognize some of those bends!
I used to travel that road quite a few times just to cruise and it was definitely nice, no potholes. Not too many trucks and in the summer mostly campers, etc. However, I don't go that way much now after nearly hitting someone in an old Pontiac who had crossed the center line in a blind curve . A totally random event I know, but I don't what to be splattered by some jerk in the middle of no where.
legacy004 03-13-2006, 04:23 PM how is the highway in general though? (potholes/gravel/wildlife)
The highway is generally in good to very good condition.
It is used a lot by local ranchers so you might come across some farm vehicles.
As for gravel roads, the Vancouver rally club (WCRA) uses this highway to access the excellent gravel roads (for those of us who don't mind a bit of gravel rash on our cars), and these secondary gravel roads take you through
beautiful back country.
skier 03-13-2006, 10:41 PM thanks for the positive comments ;)
I've seen some rough pavement patches on that road, but overall, like legacy004 said, it's pretty nice and smooth. No wildlife except a couple of geese trying to keep the balance on the frozen lake, looked pretty funny.
rekondyte 03-13-2006, 11:29 PM looks like a fun highway
incontrol 03-13-2006, 11:45 PM I love that drive. I've done it a few times just for fun at 4 in the morning. Have breakfast, turn around and come home. Nice twisties and great scenery. Hit it it as the sun is coming up and the road is empty.
alexs001 03-14-2006, 01:03 AM Next time you're in the area, take Lac Le Jeune road from Kamloops to Logan Lake and then 97C south from there. :D
lummer shawn 03-14-2006, 03:24 AM i lived on hwy 5A for over 8 years, so i recognise all those pics! great job.
butter 03-14-2006, 03:30 AM yea, 5A is a blast!
RX Renesis 03-14-2006, 07:14 AM how long is it to get there from vancouver/richmond? looks like a nice twisty for spritial drive, but might be too far to reach...
skier 03-14-2006, 10:40 PM should be about 3.5 hours to Merritt. 5a is ~ 90 kms long. Would be an awesome circle drive: Van - #1 - Hope - #5 - Merritt - #5a - Kamloops -#1 - Cache Creek - Hope - Van
vintagemilano 03-14-2006, 10:47 PM Or rip over to the duffy lake road for the trip back......
Picard 03-15-2006, 12:43 AM should be about 3.5 hours to Merritt. 5a is ~ 90 kms long. Would be an awesome circle drive
I used drive to Kamloops to have dinner at Milestones and then come back just for the drive--lotsa fun :D!
Iron Glove 03-15-2006, 06:24 PM For a great circle tour in that area, go from Princeton to 5A via Tulameen and then return South on 5A to Princeton.
The Tulameen Road AKA Coalmont Road or Otter Valley Road is paved for @ 40 km from Princeton then very good gravel to Aspen Grove (5A). Great Subie road, lots of winding turns, super scenery and open all year for snow freeks.
Bring yer fishin pole.
Gambit 03-15-2006, 07:30 PM a good way to rack up mileage on the car. :D
jsooke 03-16-2006, 11:30 PM Lived in Merritt in the '80s before 5 went in; drove that many times in the Tercel. Good fun. Another couple of good routes (in those days) was the road from Spences Bridge to Merritt (8), and a really fun loop out of Merritt was Merritt to Logan Lake/ Ashcroft (97c)/Cache Creek(01) / Spences Bridge and back to Merritt. Most of the time little traffic of any sort to worry about.
