Vehicle Offers Premium Features at an Outstanding Value, Starting at Less Than $26,000

March 13, 2006 -- CYPRESS, CALIF. -- Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today announced the pricing for its all-new 2007 Eclipse Spyder convertible. With a starting price of $25,389, the Spyder offers premium features reserved for convertibles costing thousands of dollars more. A premium GT edition, featuring a more powerful engine capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in about seven seconds, begins at $28,269. All-new Spyders will arrive in dealerships this week.

"Our dealers are excited to receive the new Eclipse Spyder," said Dan Kuhnert, MMNA vice president of sales. "With premium features at an affordable price, this vehicle should compete well in the convertible market."

Based on the fourth-generation Eclipse coupe introduced in spring 2005, the new Eclipse Spyder features a high-tech cloth convertible top that folds completely out of sight under a flush-fitting powered tonneau cover in about 19 seconds, and a standard 650-watt Rockford Fosgate premium audio system specifically engineered for the Eclipse Spyder that provides unique automatic sound equalization for top-up or top-down driving.

The vehicle's styling is designed to appeal to convertible and sports car enthusiasts of all ages with sleek, taut, muscular lines and engaging details such as bright finish LED tail lamps and monocle-lens head lamps.

The 2007 Eclipse Spyder is the third in a series of six new Mitsubishi vehicles to be introduced in less than three years. The first of these was the 2006 Eclipse coupe introduced in June 2005, followed by the all-new mid-size Raider pickup truck. Upcoming all-new models include a second-generation Outlander SUV, the Lancer sedan and the tenth version of the legendary Lancer Evolution.

Like the Eclipse coupe, the Eclipse Spyder is offered in two trim levels, a well-equipped GS model and a GT which challenges more expensive sports models.

The 2007 Eclipse Spyder GS edition starts at $25,389, manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), and features a 162-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Eclipse Spyder GT, with a 260-horsepower, 3.8-liter V6 engine mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission, begins at $28,269 MSRP. Both the four-cylinder and V6 engines feature the Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control system (MIVEC) to help optimize engine efficiency and power across a broad engine speed range. An optional Sportronic? automatic transmission, four-speed for the GS and five-speed for the GT, is available for an additional $900.

Both the GS and GT models offer a long list of standard equipment including 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, air conditioning, advanced dual-stage front air bags and seat-mounted side air bags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), cruise control, engine immobilizer, keyless entry and power windows, locks and mirrors. The Eclipse Spyder GT adds standard electronic traction control and an outside temperature and compass display to the GS-level equipment.

An optional Leather Package is available on the Eclipse Spyder GS for $980 MSRP that combines leather seating surfaces, heated front seats and heated exterior mirrors with the outside temperature and compass displays that are standard on the GT.

The GT Premium Sport Package at a $1,730 MSRP equips the GT model with 18-inch alloy wheels and 235/45 R18 tires, a six-way power driver's seat, leather seating surfaces, aluminum pedals, automatic climate control system, heated front seats and heated exterior mirrors.

An accessory package is available for each model that includes an alloy fuel door, wheel locks and two sport floor mats for $179 MSRP. A five-piece aero kit is available for $1,820.

Manufacturing And Warranty
Mitsubishi cars and sport utility vehicles are backed by a comprehensive new vehicle limited warranty that covers the vehicle from "bumper to bumper" for five years/60,000 miles. In addition, the powertrain is covered by a 10-year/100,000 mile limited warranty, while body panels
have a seven-year/100,000 mile anti-corrosion/perforation limited warranty. The program also includes 24-hour emergency roadside assistance with free towing to the nearest authorized Mitsubishi retailer for warranty-related repairs for five years/unlimited miles.

Wonder how well the new Eclipse is selling. I don't see too many of them on the road over here... I just read that the Raider is not selling at all. It sounds like Mitsu is having serious problem. IMHO, if Mitsu goes down it's bad news for the sports compact car consumers. Without Evo I don’t know if WRX would be pushed by another car to bring more bang for the buck.

I kind of like the new designs of the new eclipse. way better than last gen but the soft top convertables never really look good to me. I think it would loo better hardtop but im sure that would increase the price dramatically.

And I agree about the evo, if Subaru doesnt have any competitors, we wont get a better subaru or maybe another one not available in the US like the Spec C. Maybe if Mitsubishi keeps up the evo Subaru will feel pressured to bring over another version of the impreza

They should have gone back to the 1st and 2nd gen formula of 4g63 + AWD. A poor man's sporty Evo.

Mitsu is backed by heavy ind., they aren't going anywhere soon. Just like the doomsday predictions that some lay at suby's feet, it's brought on by short sighted economics.

A big problem for mitsu is that in their quest to fix things, they hired the guy who turned Hyundai around with the 10/100 warranties. That's about the only innovative thing he brought to Mitsu. as far as I've read in the news. Feel free to correct me if I've missed some news feeds there.

And I agree with that inexpensive 1st and 2nd gen formula ;-) Made for a lot of inexpensive fun!

the new Eclipse looks a lot better than the previous generation. My mother in law has a '98 GS Spyder (5spd)...and is eagerly looking forward to getting a new one.

if I were forced to drive this car, it would be with the top down 100% of the time, it looks like complete poop with the top up.

im pretty disapointed at mitsu... they cant come up with a steady selling vehicle to be the backbone of their company, something like an accord, camry, maxima, etc.. and then they come out with another crappy rendition of the eclipse. back in the 90's the eclipse was the only thing selling for mitsu. maybe that and the gallant. but its jus sad to see a former sports car with great potential go down the drain at the turn of the millenium.....

I think the problem with Mitsu is that they just haven't got a brand identity that they can exploit. Most cars can’t compete with the Accord/Civic or Camry/Corolla in terms of consumer perception. A mass-market car needs to be economical and reliable which the aforementioned 4 cars are known for. Whether this is reality or simple consumer perception really doesn’t matter too much in the short term because most car buyers of this segment don’t care enough to do the research. So most car company has to find their niche or identity to compete. You can go dirt cheap like Hyundai/Kia or focus on AWD like Subaru or Nissan with their push for performance image. The basic Lancer and Galant are not particularly cheap, nor high performance and most consider them to be boring or downright ugly. And over the years the Mitsu’s reliability rep hasn’t been that good. These are some bad combinations.

I think the new Lancer that Evo X will be based on could help Mitsu out of this mess. It’s a very aggressive looking car with decent price, which should attract more young buyers. Despite what us enthusiasts think a lot of consumers care more about looks then performance. Mitsu should focus on that and make aggressive looking mass-market cars. Then slap the 4G63 and AWD on everything they make… :D

That is interesting... I saw one on the highway a couple of days ago.... Wasn't a dealer car either... I guess they aren't rigid on when exactly the cars are released...

That explains a lot! :p

One of my girlfriend's neighbors has one, and I was like "When did Mitsubishi start making trucks again?"

I think the reason why it isn't selling is that mitsu was dumb enough to sign a clause with DC that stated that they could not outdo DC with regard to price and features of the truck. So the Raider turns out to be an expensive Dakota.

LOL... 2nd gen was definitely the best looking eclipse. the last gen was just stupid... and this gen looks like the 2nd gen was stung by killer bees.

Apparently, nothing from Mitsu is selling really well...... A buddy of mine says they are selling more Suzuki's down at their store, than they sell Mitsubishi's.....

The Evolution has always been a great car, but without a "real production line" of vehicles, the company is doomed.....

And to all the people who says "Mitsubishi Isn't Going Anywhere" and that "They can't go out of business" ..... Grow up, seriously..... Yes, they can....

Mitsubishi as a whole corporation.... No way, I don't see them going anywhere as they are one of the world's largest producer of electronics and various products. However, Mitsubishi Motor Cars, is a smaller piece of the their entire pie and without productivity and/or profitability, they are vulnerable to recieving the axe.... Daimler-Chysler figured this out last year and hence their split from business and financial endeavours.... The Mitsubishi corporation does not carry the Mitsubishi Motor Cars branch.... Just like when GM, cut out Oldsmobile... Sometimes you have to count your losses and move one....

If Mitsubishi does not come out with something spectacular to revitalize their entire line and boast loyalty, it is very likely that they may in fact, go out of business, at least in the North America marketplace....

Also, if Subaru intends to stay on their current path of "Premium", don't count on them focusing on the "Ultra-Performance Area" via the Impreza, but more of, the entire line becoming more BMW-like. Even if the EVO disappeared, I serious doubt Subaru would shed a tear for them, as they are not even considered direct competitors, except for the Impreza/Lancer lines....

Subaru wants to be "above and beyond" everyone else in its segment, even if that means "betraying" former customers.... If a business move promotes growth and spawns new customers via more reputable brands, then it's a smart one.... They then have their Premium name....

We may not like, but you can see it happening.... The Subaru of today is not the Subaru of ten years ago.... Many of the customers from the past do not like our current vehicle offers and features; they may in fact feel somewhat betrayed from the "cheap and ugly" cars that they used to be. The ultra-reliable buckets of metal that would never die, and who's cousin swears is the best money ever spent on a car.... To the "fully-loaded" semi-performance brand that we are now.... Progress will continue guys... They will move a little farther away from the cars that they are today and we may not like it, but business is business....

Personally, I think only a few things here and there need to be tweeked in order to have a great/solid line.... Ultimately, Subaru feels we still have a long ways to go...

P.S. - The WRX was offered for sale in America before the Evolution.... While competition is always good.... We don't NEED it....

the look of the eclipse is nice... everything else such as performance and handling sux. the eclipse seems to be more like a girl car now, all show and no go. its starting to remind me of a celica...

But not the STI. The WRX forced Mitsu to bring over the Evo which in term forced Subaru to bring over STI. Competition is always good for the consumer.

And who do we know they didn't intend on bringing it over all along ??? ;)

The market is not always about conspiracies and little Japanese men biting their nails over who's gonna bring out the "most powerful" or the "best handling".... If that was true, the market would be nothing short of flooded with similar vehicles.... :p
