Did anyone else see this? Holy crap.

It was around 11pm and I was heading to my girlfriend's apartment via new seward. A police car blocked the leftmost lane. I immediately found out why, the entire street from Benson to 36th was under at most 2 feet of water. Obviously a pipe burst or something. A few cars were unable to make it (I don't see how they couldn't, if I could) and sat on the side of the road with their hazards on. My car juuuust about died a few times, and some water leaked into the cab. Luckily I have no carpeting, so it dried out pretty quick.

Going to search ADN for a story.

Broken water main floods roadway

A major water main under the Seward Highway near Benson Boulevard burst Tuesday night, flooding the busy thoroughfare over a vast area that was a foot deep in places.

The line, which broke around 6 p.m., poured thousands of gallons of water onto the highway and into nearby parking lots, said Clinton Burton of the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility, who was on the scene late Tuesday night supervising repairs.

Cars were forced to plow through water up to their bumpers. A four-car wreck on Benson Boulevard was blamed on ice on the road. Police said one car slid into a line of others, injuring one person.

Police said water splashing onto vehicles' windows was freezing in the night air.

Burton said the broken pipe was 10 feet to 12 feet underground and crews will have to dig it up for repairs. No property was damaged, but several nearby restaurants complained of not having access to water because the line was shut off.

Burton said expect traffic to be snarled between 36th Avenue and Benson this morning. Roads could also be slick if the water freezes.

I heard about this last night on my way home. It was on the radio, forget what station. It was late and people were calling in to notify.
