smart's aren't in the US? that's news to me, we've had them in Canada for a while now, so I just assumed that that meant the US had them as well, since I guess the only changes would be the gauge cluster and DRLs...kind of weird if you ask me. Not that I would buy one, but still.

Yeah...we've had them in Canada for a few years now.... They're really funny looking (imho).

They're tiny cars and I definately wouldn't want to get into an accident when driving one.

TFA is about Zap. They've been selling federalized Smart Four2 coupes for the last year. The waiting list is about two years long. They have about a 5 year exclusive distribution license from Daimler for the Smart Four2 in the US.

Smart cars suck, same milage as a 1993 Jetta TDI what a useless car

I kindda like the Smart Roadster. It's really slow but looks like a fun little commute car if it handles well.
Not a fan of the Smart for Two and I don't see how they can charge $15-25k them. You can get a new '06 Civic for that price. They might have a shot if they sell it for ~10k. Besides, I hate to see a crash test between that and an Excursion...

Read Gordon Murray's article about his Smart Roadster in a recent evo...sounds like a fun car to drive.

Sounds like Subaru missed out on a HUGE opportunity to bring out the R1e/R2 stateside with little to no competition. Smart will be the next Mini here!

Well, when the do come stateside, 20 something girls are going to be posting to their MySpace blogs how cool their Smart Cars are before you know it!

they were everywhere in Taiwan, they are pretty cool. Mercedes makes a similar one too, on top of the smart ones.

I think there will be a lot of "little" competition. The Toyota Vitz/Yaris is going to be available soon, Honda is bring over Fit and Nissan is working on bring the Cube/March over to the USDM too. The Yaris is a $12k car and I think it provides much better value than the Smart.

There are a lot of smaller cars for sale in Canada that we don't have in the US, such as the Toyota Echo hatchbacks. I went to Mont Tremblant for Spring Break last year and was amazed by all the tiny cars I saw there that I had never seen before.

I just saw one licensed and driving in Las Vegas in January.....literally between an Excursion and an H2. Thats the part that I dont get, how can they be legal with so many vehicles that would just flatten them and kill the occupants?

A Smart is basically a roll cage with wheels and some body panels stuck on. They do much, much better in a crash than you'd think.

My girlfriend has wanted a Four2 since seeing them during a trip to France about 5 years ago. She is going to "settle" for a Yaris though, she's ready to buy one as soon as they hit the local dealer.

Yeah. I guess they wouldnt be for sale legally if they wouldn't pass the crash tests.
+1 for the Yaris hatchback

How well they do in a crash test isn't that important when they meet an SUV head on. Internal organs don't like going from 60mph to 20mph THE OTHER DIRECTION in a split second. The SUV, with crumple zones and more mass, would be the much safer bet in such a collision. The SUV may also look like it was damaged more due to crumple zones.

In a rollover, the Smart is probably the better choice.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the safety that much with the Smart b/c it's a city car where most driving is lower speeds.

It's ironic that we, in an auto forum, get our car news from a PC magazine!

...which is even more confusing because they just axed the Smart Roadster and sold the rights to a small British company.

This is funny because I could have sworn I saw a SMART on the way to work today... It confused the living crap put of me....

+1 for costing too much... It needs to be under 10K for sure. its not like there is much there.
