View Full Version : Help with Oil Pressure and EGT readings

I just had my new Nexus EGT, boost, and oil pressure gauges installed and I'm wondering a few things. First, I'm betting I have a bad oil pressure sensor, but would like a second opinion. It seems to be reading WAY high. Second, I'm not sure where my EGT temp should be sitting normally. I'm guessing that it's a little high since I'm not currently running any EM (Can't seem to get my hands on an Cobb AP due to their supply issues. PDX is currently out with no ETA.) I'm running a catted full 3" turbo back with a divorced waste gate from Worx Tuning and a K&N Short Ram intake. The rest is completely stock, including stock map of course.

Now for the data thanks to Autometer and the ability to do data logging with the Nexus gauges. This was done just sitting in my driveway revving my engine. No movement, no load with a warm engine.

Small screen shot of the graph:

Link to the RECORD.NEX file so you can see it in real time. (http://www.tngg.org/Uploads/RECORD.NEX)

And if you need the software to view it, you can find it at the Autometer site here. (http://www.autometer.com/demos/nexus/nexus.exe)

I suppose the question I ask is... where is your oil pressure sending unit installed at and where is your EGT probe installed in your exhaust system. Sure, you could have a bad oil pressure senor or it was installed in a poor area of the oiling system (but no area should be at a constant high pressure at idle or even at cruising). So yes, you could have a bad sending unit or poor wiring.

What is your specs for oil pressure and EGT temps... I got nothing, but a big red X.. so couldn't look at.

Oil pressure is tapped at the OEM location on top of the block. EGT is in the "standard" location in the driver's side manifold.

You get X's? I see them just fine. What about the link to the full image? Give me a sec and I'll try to fix them. But the oil pressure is basically pegging out at 100psi when I rev it slightly (2-4k RPM). And EGT gets to 1400F when at a constant 2.5-3K RPM. I've seen them as high as 1500F when cruising on relatively flat ground in 6th at 65MPH.

Ok, this is strange, checked the links/images on 2 other PC's here and double checked the links, and they seem to work.

Anybody have any input? Or can nobody see the graph or get to the links?

i can see the images. so you read 100psi at idle? what weight oil do you use? was the engine cold or warm?

1500 is ok for egt. 1550-1600 is pushing the limits.
i believe both numbers are ok....no concerns.

Oil pressure is between 90 and 100 psi anywhere above idle. It will drop to about 30psi at idle (@700 RPM). That just seems excessively high.

Oil pressure looks fine: 25psi+ at idle when warm which jumps to 90psi+ once RPM gets over 2k.

To answer your question your oil pressure will rely on three things the viscosity of the oil your rpm ant the oil tempature. If you are using say 10-40wt oil the pressure is 25-35 at idle and 80-90 at most any rpm above 1500. A pressure reading that is never stable and constantly geting higer or lower each time you turn on the ignition is a bad sending unit or a oooo noooo. down ther road.
As an example the factory oil pressure units in stock jeeps have the rising problem. The pressure gets better on the guage each time you turn the switch to start it up, but it is false hope. If you ever owned an old jeep you will know what I mean.
In my Subaru I run 10-40 wt oil and get about 25 lbs at idle and a solid 80lbs under any load.
The pump pressure is normaly about 80lbs but i have seen many subarus run a solid 90lbs even at 100,000+ mile motors.
In comparison my built vw air cooled runs 80 lbs pressure cold an 90lbs under load cold or hot. It mantains a stagnent pressure due to the fact that vw uses a relief valve that mantains its set pressure.(late model vw case 041)
The opposit is my v8 powered 76 land cruiser that runs 90lbs cold but drops to a low 35-40lbs when hot even at high rpm. This is bad and this is where your concern relys when looking at your oil pressure for your subaru.
hope that helps!

On a side note I also have the nexus set but not the ability to lode the file. (I need to call them since I was a early bird and bought thes when they came out.)

oil pressure readings are fine.....just like mine

The software to load the file is a 30 day demo, so go ahead and download it and give it a try.

So it seems almost pegging out the oil pressure gauge is not bad. I'm running 5-30W, as recommended by subaru (Dealer oil changes for the first few.) I just found it kinda odd to see them that high. I never saw that high of pressures in my old car.

Im seeing the same oil pressure #'s and egt temp cruising as you are.

idle- around 25lbs
anything higher than idle- 80-100+lbs
I'm running 5-30w oil

My EGT's read 1400 cruising down the highway also.

Amsoil 20W50 idles at 35-40 in my car at 180F, runs 90-100psi at full throttle. Your oil pressure values look fine.

Everything looks fine.

I just installed my EGT, BOOST, & Oil Press gauges that were user Nexus and I got the same sparatic pressure that's around 80 psi running above idle and 20-30 psi @ idle. You sure these are OK??? I could have sworn that the gauge, sending unit, wiring is bad?
