after burning myself for the last time on the black plastic subaru oem shift knob getting in my car after work (since it seems to conduct heat better than any material i've ever seen), i decided to go out and find a replacement at the local shift knob/big muffler store...which was quite a hilarious adventure in and of itself. but that's another story.
anyway, i found a metal race air replica (since i can't justify spending $80 on a shift knob) on the closeout shelf for $10...worked for me.
(yes, technically i guess i have a ricey knockoff part on my car now)
i gleefully run home to put it on, and because it's universal fit, it slides all the way down past the threads on the shift lever...making it noticeably shorter than stock. tighten it down, and the effort is a bit higher (since the fulcrum point is obviously unchanged), but the action is a bit more precise as well. so figured if a little is good, a lot is better, so i get out old mr. metal saw, and cut a few threads off the top...
when it's all said and done, the shift throw is quite a bit shorter, and the action, while requiring a bit more effort, is much improved. it feels like a heavier version of the shifter in my ex's del sol.
i would have never thought something so ghetto-tech would work this well, but there you go...
your mileage may vary.
