View Full Version : 06 WRX with catless exhaust (no EM)
TrunkMonkey56 03-19-2006, 03:01 PM I had an 03 WRX with a catless perrin downpipe and a tanabe ti catback. I was wondering if anyone would know if it would be fine to run that same exhaust setup on my 06 with out engine management? I thought I remembered the 04-05 having some issues doing that due to the open loop closed loop delay. I don't think there would be any boost creep cause the turbo is so small, but I'm not sure about that either. Thanx for your help. I have 50 miles till the motor is broken in, and then I would like to put the parts on :)
RUKnight 03-19-2006, 03:31 PM EM should be your first mod. The 06's are even pickier then the 04/05 because the 06 has an extra half liter of displacement it's very susceptable to boost creep.

Unabomber 03-19-2006, 11:21 PM Every 04+ Subaru except the STi has the open/closed loop issue.
john_tran 03-20-2006, 12:45 AM Don't do it!!! I currently have a turboback on right now, and I spiked the other day. Knowing that you are doing something detrimental to your vehicle and expecting it to occur is not a good idea. When it happens you just want to kick your own ass...

I agree. The TXS is simple and comes with preprogramed maps. There are also the reflashes, but neves seen it around here. Read good things about them like Cobb and PDX.
Busting a piston will take you back around $3K in labor and parts.

Like the friend said above, should have gotten engine management first.
DUBXTCY 03-20-2006, 01:11 AM +1, I have a 06 TR as well and did EM the same time as TBE (catless) No problems at all.
BigDogC 03-20-2006, 01:30 AM i have a completely stock 06 and im getting boost creep... is this right? anytime im boosting and shift fmro 2nd to 3rd the RPMs shoot really high up.
th3w0rm 03-20-2006, 09:49 AM cobb stage 2 here, Cat-less DP. No boost creep, but you definitly need to go with the EM first.
davisk6 03-20-2006, 10:13 AM True, there are open/closed loop delay, but your real issue will be the stock EM. It is not set up to handle the additional flow that a TBE will bring, thus resulting in spiking and boost creep which can severly damage your engine.
EM
TBE
If boost creep still occurs - port wastegate.
scooby24 03-20-2006, 10:18 AM of course you don't NEED engine management first.
It's good to have....but you're not going to blow your motor if you don't get it right away.
Hell I had catless turbo-back + manual boost at 16 psi on my 04 WRX...without engine management....sold it at 16k miles with no problems and the car is still running around today without an issue.
Unless your EGT's get too high, you get detonation, or you boost beyond the mechanical limits of the engine, you'll be okay without EM.
Despite popular belief a catless turbo back will not do any of these things...unless you creep and aren't tuned to protect yourself from it.
And there is a BIG difference between creep and spike.

Had the same issue stock and with a perrin crank pulley. Here is a link to what i found.

That's definately NOT boost creep.
Boost creep is when you're on throttle and the wastegate cannot flow enough and you'll see pressure begin to rise beyond what peak boost should be.
slipstreamxk1 03-20-2006, 12:32 PM I did full tbe and even added an intake before i got my cobb... no boost creep issues at all... just reset your ecu after you install the upgrades and it should be ok.
GregsblueRex 03-20-2006, 02:11 PM Do you think i will get creep issues w/ the following:
Cobb stg 2 93
Invidia 3" turbo back
headers
Intake
TXS TMIC
Thanks, I am new to the finicky creep issues of the 2.5.

Catted or Catless?

It all depends, people get boost creep with just a cat less downpipe, some people get boost creep and hit fuel cut off with a cated down pipe, and then there are some people that have a full catless TBE that never get boost creep. This is a pure mechanical issue that depends heavily on the outside temperature. If you drive your car in very cold weather and get on it hard you are more likely to get creep than if you drove it in warmer weather. The issue with creep only happens to about half of the cars that have high flow exhausts so it is entirely dependent on your car and your driving conditions.
slipstreamxk1 03-20-2006, 05:28 PM your setup should be fine and boost creep does seem to run differently between vehicles. As i have never experienced it with any mod to date while others have. but you will want to get some kind of em soon after.
